Story
My name is GRUMPY and I’m a 5y M Tan Shih Tzu X. I’m 15 lbs of PURE SWEET GROUCHINESS. I was brought to a police precinct in the Bronx, NY and luckily the rescue was able to save me before I was taken to the shelter. I was affectionately named Grumpy because I was not immediately warm and fuzzy with the foster mom and growled at her a lot… but once I got to know her and she went slow with me to introduce me to her household… I trusted her and she can do anything to me now. I’m a little guarded with strangers and rightly so because I was pretty much neglected by my previous family. I’m housebroken and walk well on the leash and I can be picked up and handled as long as you slow. I’m a nice guy but nervous at first so I need someone who is going to be patient and believe in me and give me the TLC I need. I’m good with small dogs but am afraid of big dogs and will snap/snark at them. I’ve not met any cats so not sure about them and best if I don’t go with any young kids. I prefer to be the ONLY DOG so I can get all the attention that I never got in my previous home. My only other vice is that it’s not easy to groom me.. I’m nervous around objects coming to my face so I need to go to an experienced groomer but I was fine being handled by the vet. I need a QUIET ADULT ONLY home with someone or a couple that are home a lot and have had previous experience with a “grumpy” dog and are willing to give me the TLC and believe in me to make me the SWEET AND LOVING dog I know I can be!! If that’s you.. pls request an application by sending an email to: INFO@TAILSOFLOVERESCUE.ORGOctober 21, 2024, 12:19 am

Story
Leia is a very special Maltese mix. I have known her since she was a puppy and I love her very much. I have fostered her for quite some time, and am now looking for a new home for little Leia. I am looking for someone who will love her even more and someone I can have a great relationship with long-term (as I have her son Moo, the black and white dog). Leia is super energetic, an awesome jumper, loves to play fetch and has a wonderful personality. She is not neutered and needs up to date shots. She had a surgery on her tail last year, so now she has a small little fluffy tail. Overall, she is a great dog. She has had some difficulty potty training over the years, so she unfortunately still does have accidents in the house. But with love and training, I believe she can overcome this. I'd like to keep in touch with her new owner and maintain a relationship as she adjusts. Please message me if interested.

Story
Dove  - 8 months (as of 11/3), 7lbs, Maltese Mix, Spayed  Estimated Full Grown Size 10lbs PLEASE NOTE: Needs a home out of the city. Some dogs can't hang in the city. Would LOVE a home with another dog.  Want to adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org. Thier Foster Parent Says: Dove is a very quiet and chill dog. She likes to mostly lay on her favorite blanket and sleep. When she does wake up she is very quiet and likes to roam. She is more independent but can be very snuggly when she wants to be. She is a bit of a challenge when we want to take her on walks as she isn’t leash trained and after she does her business likes to go home right after. She is a bit uninterested in toys but loves belly rubs and good pets. She is fully potty trained and has ran into no problems with going to the bathroom in the apartment.  Level of dog ownership experience needed: INTERMEDIATE: As an adult, this dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day. The adopter must have relevant primary care experience with a similar breed, temperament, and/or energy level. (Primary care experience includes ownership, fostering, or dog sitting as an adult, not a dog you grew up with.) Relevant puppy care experience is a huge plus, but bare minimum the adopter must have TONS of time and patience. Raising a puppy can be a lot of fun, but it’s also  tremendous work. Puppies’ personalities and exercise/stimulation requirements change dramatically between now and when they’re a year old as their bodies and brains develop, so an active lifestyle and the ability to adapt to a pup’s evolving needs are a must. We strongly urge professional dog training with a rewards based trainer from the get go. Adults only or kids ages 8 and up – all puppies go through a mouthy, rambunctious phase and often accidentally hurt children when playing. PLEASE DO YOUR OWN BREED RESEARCH to make sure you have a better understanding of the kind of temperament and exercise requirements this dog may have as an adult. Energy level  MEDIUM: Very young puppies sleep and nap a lot, but their energy level skyrockets when they become teens (4 months to around a year). As an adult, this dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day at a minimum. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.)  Potty trained?Working on this skill. Puppies under 12 weeks old are often on track with their wee pad skills, but they’re too young to walk outside in public NYC areas yet because they haven’t finished their puppy vaccine series. Puppies older than 12 weeks are usually learning to do their business outside. Potty training takes a lot of patience, consistency, and clean up.  Crate trained?Nope. None of our new puppies have been formally trained, but many of our foster parents/adopters choose to crate train. It can be a great way to keep puppies safe and teach them independence. Social with dogs?Yes. Some puppies are shy, others are bold, but all have the potential to be taught healthy socializing skills. It’s a huge part of raising a puppy and must be done carefully. How they interact with other dogs depends largely on how their humans help them learn to.  Social with children?  (ALWAYS requires adult supervision)Yes… but most puppies are not a great match for a home with kids under age 8 because they go through intense mouthy play and rambunctious phases and often accidentally hurt young kids while playing. Children must always be monitored and taught to interact with dogs of any age respectfully.   Social with cats?Yes. Almost all puppies have the potential to be friends with a cat. It’s on the adopter to know their cat’s temperament and preferences and to teach their puppy respectful manners.  Mouthy play:  High! All puppies go through phases where they chew your stuff and grab your hands, arms, feet… puppies naturally explore the world, play, and test boundaries with their mouths. (It also happens when they’re teething.) Their teeth are super sharp though, so it can be a very painful phase for humans and other animals in the home. Proper training, outlets, and socialization are key. Leash manners:None. :) Will need to learn this skill.   Separation anxiety:MEDIUM: Most puppies have some level of separation anxiety as they learn to self soothe. Often they cry the first 10+ minutes when they are left home alone or in a crate. Consistent training and alone time is crucial. Medical status:Healthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP and Bordetella vaccines (for dogs under 4 months old, adopters will need to finish the DHPP vaccine series and administer the Rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age), spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer uponHow this dog ended up with Social Tees:Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee or St. Thomas. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.  PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!  This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes. Story
Aldo, an adorable 1.5 year old who’s 12lbs of charm, is ready to be scooped by his own person! His exact breed is unknown, but he looks like a mix of Maltese and a Poodle. He is affectionate, friendly, and easy to train. He was abandoned on the street and a Good Samaritan brought him to the shelter. We don’t know why he was left behind, but that’s in his past and his caretakers and volunteers have erased all Aldo’s negative memories. He is is very playful and loving dog. He loves being the center of attention and going for walks where he can discover the world. He is good with other dogs and he can be little dominant with male dogs. Despite his small size, he has a big personality! Aldo’s easygoing and affectionate temperament make him an ideal companion for all types of households. He loves social interaction and strongly attaches himself to human companions. He has a moderate energy level so regular walks, playtime, and mental stimulation are important for his well-being. Aldo is crate trained, up to date on all vaccinations, neutered, and microchipped. He has a chance to come to New York and he is available for direct adoption or foster to adopt. Interested in this sweet love bug? Please visit our website to fill out an adoption application or email us at sosanimalwelfare@gmail.com and we will happily get back to you. Charming Aldo is ready and waiting for some belly rubs!

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Tully (GA) is a male Yorkie or Maltese mix (not sure!) estimated to be 12-18 months old at the time of intake in October 2024. Tully is up to date on core vaccinations and is microchipped. He will be neutered prior to joining his forever home unless there is a medical reason why it has not yet been completed (in which case RDRNYC will work with the adopter to ensure this is done at the appropriate time). Tully is good with people and other dogs. Tully needs some dental work which will be performed prior to adoption. This tiny guy had a very rough start in life, having been abandoned on the streets at just a year old. When a good samaritan tried to help Tully, she was advised by Animal Control that there was no place for Tully to go, so if Animal Control came out to get him, they would shoot him on the spot. We couldn't let that happen, so when the good samaritan asked if we would save Tully, of course we said YES! Tully is now ready to start his life over in a happy, loving, safe forever home. If you would like Tully's life to start over with you, please apply online to adopt Tully (GA) at www.rescuedogsrocknyc.org.Given technical constraints on this database, this pet's location may not be as listed here. We can, however, provide transport support for pets in foster at a considerable idstance from the adopter. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.December 4, 2024, 12:35 am
