Story
Nigiri has been patiently waiting for over four months, watching his friends head off to their forever homes… and wondering when it will finally be his turn. This sweet 10-year-old Maltese mix may be small (just 10 pounds!), but his heart is huge.   Nigiri is the definition of a “Velcro dog”—he loves being close to his person and will happily follow you from room to room, just to keep you company. If you’re looking for a loyal little shadow who will shower you with quiet devotion, Nigiri is your guy. He’s also great with dogs and does well with kids, making him a wonderful addition to many different types of families. Nigiri would do well with a dog buddy, but otherwise his perfect home would be with someone who is retired and is home a lot. Or is retired and wants to take Nigiri with them when they run errands, etc.   Nigiri does have diabetes, which means he needs insulin injections twice a day. But don’t let that scare you—he takes them like an absolute champ, with zero fuss. He’s cooperative, gentle, and makes it easy to care for him. All Nigiri really wants is someone who sees past his medical condition and recognizes the loving, gentle companion he truly is. He’s past the puppy chaos and ready to settle into a calm, cozy home where he can spend his golden years by your side.   Nigiri has been overlooked for far too long. Could you be the one to give him the forever home he’s been waiting for?   Age: 10 years Weight: 10 pounds Breed: Maltese mix Ideal Home: Quiet, loving, low-energy Temperament: Gentle, affectionate, calm   Interested in adopting Nigiri? Please submit an adoption application asking for Nigiri TX at www.northstarpets.org!  April 21, 2026, 5:25 pm

Story
DOB 6-11-2025 This gorgeous little boy named Natan is a sweetheart. He is a little shy, gets along with other little dogs, loves to play and is social. Natan is up to date on shots and a healthy boy! Natan's adoption fee is 900.00 and his transport fee is 165.00. Our transport is HEARTS LLC, they run every other week to their stops on the East Coast. They are the best transport and the only one we will use. The first step in the adoption process is to fill out an online adoption application. You can find a copy of that application here. After you submit your application please allow a few days to review your application. During this time your vet reference will be checked. Applications are not approved on a first come, first serve basis. We do look for the best home that fits each of our pets, so even if the pet has other applications, this does not mean he/she will be adopted to that home. Once your application has been approved we with contact you to set up a phone interview. This is the perfect time for you to ask any questions you have about the adoption process and the pet you are interested in.Together we can decide if this is the best choice for both.

Story
PLEASE READ BELOW FOR OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION LINK MEET DEXTER the MALTI-CHON-POO North New Jersey Dexter is an 18lb 10 yo Maltese-Bichon-Poodle and the sweetest little dude. Dexter was loved his whole life but unfortunately his elderly owner could no longer care for him. He is loving, gentle, and quiet and would be a wonderful companion for someone who is retired or works from home and wants a buddy to hang out with. Dexter loves to nap and EAT and enjoys meandering around the yard sniffing all the smells. In his former home he didn’t have a yard so he is accustomed to going for walks. He lived with another small breed dog in his former home and currently in his foster home and doesn’t have much interest in them. He very much prefers his human but he is pretty independent as well. He is just an all-around easy going guy that is just happy to have a soft bed and yummy food with some pets and loving in between. Dexter is not a fussy eater but his tummy was a bit of figuring out. He landed on a basic kibble and has been regular since. He was brought UTD, HW negative, had a dental and cherry eye removal (it won’t come back), full blood work and xrays, he is neutered, and he is housebroken for outside but he will use potty pads if available. He is a loving little guy that deserves his special person for the holidays. If you are interested in meeting Dexter please fill out our adoption application (link below) and read our process (below and on our website). Please note we do not reply to all applications we receive, unfortunately we do not have the bandwidth to do so at this time. We only reply if we would like to move forward with your application and we will get in touch relatively quickly so please watch your email and answer your phone. Thank you very much in advance for your understanding!! His adoption donation is $450. TO BE CONSIDERED, PLEASE FILL OUT OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION We only process complete applications and providing false information immediately disqualifies you from adopting. https://gingerbreaddogs.org/adopt-overview/adoption-application/ Please follow our Facebook page to see new dogs as they arrive and to keep up on the daily shenanigans: https://www.facebook.com/gingerbreaddogs ABOUT OUR PROCESS: WE ONLY CONTACT APPLICANTS WITH WHOM WE WANT TO MOVE FORWARD. We typically get in touch within 24-48 hours, but it may take up to 10 days. Please watch your email and answer your phone (from 201 area code) after you submit an application. Unfortunately, we do not have the manpower to reply to all applicants. We also do not have the manpower to accept phone calls. Everything we know about the dog is posted above. Our adoption process is on our website. You can see more about our daily operations on our Facebook page. PLEASE call your vet office right now and give them permission to speak with rescues if you are applying to adopt from any rescue. Ask them to mark your file. If they will not speak with us, we will move on to the next application and you will not be considered. We consider out-of-area adoptions on a case-by-case basis. All meet & greets and adoptions are held in north New Jersey, and we do not transport our pups. You must come to NJ. We also do not “hold” dogs. It is “first qualified, first come” and our expectation is you will move quickly to conduct the meet & greet if you are approved. An approved application does not guarantee adoption of any dog from our rescue, and we reserve the right to deny adoption at any point during the process.

Story
Logan is an 11-year-old Maltese who spent his life as a deeply loved companion to my parents. After they both passed away within the last six months, Logan is now looking for a new home where he can continue to receive the love, stability, and companionship he is used to. Logan is house trained, affectionate, and loves to cuddle. He is happiest when he is close to his person, whether sitting beside you on the couch, relaxing quietly nearby, or following you around the house. He has a gentle, calm, and loyal personality, making him a wonderful companion dog. He is up to date on his vaccinations, and about five months ago he had dental work that included a few tooth extractions. He healed very well and is doing great. Logan would do best in a loving, calm home where someone appreciates a sweet companion who enjoys quiet time and cuddles. The best words to describe Logan are gentle, loving, loyal, and affectionate, a true companion looking for a family to share his heart with.

Story
Pop Quiz ❓ 🤔 Your child “falls” on your dog. The dog is limping and not bearing weight on his back leg, now growling and snapping when touched or approached by the child and when anyone tries to touch his back end, and clearly freaked out and in a lot of pain. Do you A: Bring the dog to the vet immediately for pain medication and x-rays? B: Wait and let him limp around a few days. Then call an extremely full local county shelter with over 100 dogs to immediately surrender him since he’s suddenly become aggressive and the child is now scared to approach him, You probably got the answer wrong. It’s clearly B. A no-brainer of course 🤷‍♀️. Don’t feel bad, we would have answered wrong too 🤣 Well little Poochie was surrendered to us and shockingly we brought him right to the vet. He was even more terrified, an already unsocialized little guy now in severe pain having to be handled by strangers. His x-rays revealed a completely dislocated hip that requires surgery to repair and get him comfortable again. He’s just a baby, purchased from a pet store as a puppy as a “designer” Malshi (Maltese/Shih tzu), 14lbs and just over a year old. He’s very scared and distrustful right now but we are hoping once he is out of pain and gets his bearings in a new place he will learn to trust and be a sweet little guy once again, at least with those he trusts. He’s had his FHO surgery and is recovering nicely and starting to use his leg a little more every day. He’s warmed up to us and is a lovable spunky puppy with those he trusts, but needs time to warm up to strangers. Please consider a donation toward Poochie’s medical bills, a huge unexpected expense but turning this scared injured pup away was not an option for us, and we know we can rely on you, our followers, to help him heal ❤️‍🩹 Email njwoof@cs.com if you have a calm adult home with no “falling” kids and would like to open your home to him once he’s ready Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Story
Senior Abigail is back on the market and cuter than ever 😍 Don’t let her crusty old lady looks fool you, she is not a sleepy lapdog for Grandma and likes to be up and about where the action is. She prances and dances on her walks and around the yard and is always right at your feet gazing up at you lovingly and pawing you to share your meals or do something fun. She’s fine with other little dogs that aren’t aggressive to her or would be fine as an only; she’s all about human attention. She changes color depending on her stage of hair growth like a chameleon; when she was shaved down she appeared white but now that her hair is growing back she’s actually tan. Maybe if we let her hair grow long enough she will turn purple 🤔. She is non-shedding so will need grooming and was a matted mess when she originally came to us. We think she’s some kind of Maltese/yorkie/poodle type mix, about 8-10 years old, and 12lbs. She came to us with multiple low grade cancerous mammary masses that were removed but should be monitored for future recurrence or spread, and has chronic dry eye that needs prescription eye drops longterm which she’s very cooperative for. But otherwise in great health, bounces around like a much younger dog and is a friendly sweet little girl. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Abigail in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ.
