BLACKIE ARRIVES TUESDAY & HE HAS NOWHERE TO GO. For 8 years, Blackie’s life has known very little kindness. This small senior poodle spent his entire life being abused and neglected. Instead of being loved like family, he was treated like he didn’t matter. And in the end, the people who were supposed to protect him simply gave him away to breeders. After everything he’s endured, Blackie is arriving at Denkai Animal Sanctuary on Tuesday terrified and unsure of the world around him. And right now, he still does NOT have a foster or adoptive home waiting for him. He is a very scared little dog. The kind of scared that comes from years of being failed by humans. We don’t know how many times Blackie was yelled at, ignored, hurt, or left wondering if anyone would ever care about him. What we do know is that dogs like him often get overlooked because they’re fearful and shut down. But underneath that fear is a dog who deserves patience, safety, and finally being shown what love feels like. Blackie needs a calm, compassionate foster or adopter willing to give him time to decompress and heal. He does not need perfection. He just needs someone willing to be gentle with his heart. Meet Daphne, newly adoptable little cutie! Nine pounds of floof, affection, and absolute devotion. Daphne is about 3 years old and the kind of little dog people dream about finding…soft, sweet, and happiest when she’s right by your side. She’s a true Velcro dog who would gladly spend 24/7 as your tiny shadow, curled beside you on the couch, following you from room to room, and making sure you never have to do life alone. She’s potty trained, quick to learn, and eager to please. She came into rescue as a stray, and after her hold was up, she found herself needing a little extra help finding the home she truly deserves. We suspect she’s a Maltipoo, maybe with a little Bichon mixed in, but mostly she’s just the perfect blend of tiny, cuddly, and completely lovable. Daphne gets along well with other dogs and cats, once she has a little time to settle in and feel safe. Cortado is a 3-year-old poodle mix weighing 7 lbs, with a gentle, sensitive personality. He enjoys spending time with other dogs and continues to build confidence through positive social interactions and group play, where he is learning appropriate social cues. Cortado will do best in a home with another confident dog to help guide him and provide reassurance as he adjusts. He is still learning to trust people and will need a committed adopter who is willing to go slow, build a strong bond, and help him feel safe through consistent, positive experiences. Cortado can be a little sensitive with handling right now as he learns that people can be safe and predictable. He is making great progress, and our behavior team would love to talk more about the support and guidance that will help him continue to thrive. He will do best with a calm, patient adopter—ideally someone experienced with shy or undersocialized dogs—who understands the importance of respecting his boundaries and moving at his pace. Cortado will need a securely fenced-in yard to safely explore and continue building confidence. He will also need to go home with a secure, properly fitted harness to support safe leash handling as he learns. A meet and greet at the shelter is required to ensure it is a good fit for both Cortado and his future family. With time, patience, and consistency, Cortado has great potential to grow into a more confident and loving companion.------ Before being rescued, many of our dogs had limited socialization, so they may need some time to adjust to life as a family pet. Older kids are often a great fit for our dogs, and homes with younger children will be considered based on each dog’s individual needs. Skills like house training and leash walking may take a little extra patience and practice. However, with understanding and a gentle hand, most of these dogs adapt quite quickly.
