If you would like the first opportunity to adopt, please fill out an application to be considered.   Adoption Fee: $650 *Rocky Road is an option for Foster-to-Adopt!* Rocky Road is the perfect mix of sweet, nutty, and full of surprises—just like his namesake! This 6 year old, 16 pound Mini Aussie-Spaniel mix is packed with personality. He’s got the energy of a double scoop, the devotion of your favorite comfort treat, and just the right amount of crunch (especially when he gets excited for treats!). Whether he’s zooming around the house or melting into you for back scritches, Rocky Road is guaranteed to add a little flavor to your life. He also is housetrained! Much like a heaping bowl of his namesake, Rocky Road came with a few extra toppings when he first arrived—like a tendency to jump on tables in search of snacks! Now that he’s settled in, he’s showing his softer side. He’s a certified Velcro dog, always sticking close to his foster dad, and loves rolling against you for extra love. While he still wears a belly band indoors as he masters house training, he’s completely crate-trained and often tucks himself in for a cozy nap in his crate with the door open. Rocky Road enjoys a daily routine filled with adventure. He starts his mornings with a walk at 6:30 am, followed by breakfast, and then naps while his humans are at work. Afternoons and evenings bring more walks, lounging in the office, and hanging out with the family. On weekends, he enjoys spending all day with his people, making sure they never have a moment without a little extra sweetness in their lives. He loves toys, will happily toss them for himself, and gets a kick out of barking at other dogs during walks—he’s still learning that not every pup wants to be part of his sundae squad! The ideal home for Rocky Road? One where his people are around often and ready to take him on plenty of adventures—hiking, walking, or maybe even camping under the stars. A yard would be a great bonus for this energetic pup, and older kids would be best since he gets extra excited for treats (watch your fingers—placing them on the ground is the safest way to serve this little guy his snacks!). If you're looking for a dog with a heart full of love, a spirit full of fun, and just the right amount of crunch, Rocky Road is ready to be the sweetest addition to your home!March 21, 2025, 7:59 pm

Meet Finn!   If your dream dog is smart, athletic, goofy, and loyal to the core — congratulations, you just found him! Finn is a 2 year old Mini Australian Shepherd (with a full-sized heart!) who weighs in at a perfect 35 pounds. He’s on the hunt for an active, outdoorsy, and dog-savvy home where he can put all his brains and energy to good use.   Finn’s days are filled with adventure — whether it’s trotting alongside you on the trails, playing epic games of backyard tag (figure eights are his specialty), or showing off his impressive list of tricks. He’s incredibly intelligent and loves learning, especially when treats are involved. Sit, roll over, weave through your legs? He’s got it down. With the right guidance, Finn could easily be your future agility dog, hiking buddy, or even the star of your neighborhood's next dog show. He doesn’t just want a job; he needs a job to feel happy and fulfilled.   Finn is wonderful with other dogs he knows and is happy to share his home and heart with doggy friends. Like many young herding breeds, he’s energetic and full of enthusiasm — sometimes too much for a simple stroll around the block! On leash, he can be reactive to dogs and people passing by, barking and pulling with excitement. However, he’s been working hard on his manners and will thrive with a confident, experienced person who can continue to lead him with calm guidance. If you love a good training challenge and believe in bringing out the best in your dog, Finn is ready to meet you halfway (especially if you have treats).   At home, Finn is a total sweetheart. He’s house-trained, respectful of your belongings, and happiest when he’s close to his people — sleeping at your feet, supervising your activities, or doing a quick zoomie in the yard just to celebrate life. He would love a fenced yard to burn off some energy daily and a human who shares his love of movement, learning, and fun.   Finn is not a dog for a first-time owner, but for the right person — someone who knows that a brilliant, active dog needs more than a couple of walks a day — he’s an absolute gem. If you're ready for a loyal sidekick who’ll make you laugh, keep you moving, and reward your efforts with endless love and devotion, Finn is ready to be your next great adventure.April 26, 2025, 7:00 am

Story
I am at Oakland Animal Services in kennel Dog J:5Meet Seabreeze – a gentle, sensitive girl ready to find her footing and flourish. &#239&#184&#143 At just over a year old and 42 lbs, Seabreeze is a beautiful Australian Shepherd mix with a soft soul and a whole lot of potential. She was adopted for a short time but came back to the shelter when the match wasn’t quite right—she’s still learning to feel safe around men and young children, and would do best in a calm, experienced home that can help her build trust at her own pace. Seabreeze has a few obedience skills under her belt already, and she’s eager to learn more! With her smarts, a love for gentle encouragement, and a willingness to connect, she could really blossom with some training, structure, and maybe even a little agility work to help her gain confidence. In playgroups, Seabreeze is more of a quiet observer than a social butterfly, but she’s calm and respectful with other dogs. A confident canine sibling could be a great role model for her as she continues to adjust to the world outside the shelter. This sweet pup may be shy at first, but once she feels safe, she leans in for affection and starts to show her true, loving self. If you're patient, dog-savvy, and ready to help a young pup grow into the amazing companion she’s meant to be, Seabreeze could be the perfect match. Come meet her at Oakland Animal Services and help her catch her stride.April 22, 2025, 2:49 pm

Story
Meet Milo, a 2-year-old Australian Shepherd/Mix. Milo is energetic, playful, and sweet as a cherry pie. He`s also a respectful gentleman, always waiting his turn for treats. If you`re looking for a dog who`s more than just a pretty face, Milo is your guy. His brains, charm, and impeccable manners make him the perfect addition to any family (a home without cats will probably be best). Adopt Milo, and let the fun-filled adventures begin!Milo recently spent a short time in a Foster home. He`s what they had to say: `He is a VERY well-trained dog. House-trained, waits for permission to get on furniture, does not pull on leash, and checks-in constantly with surrounding people to see where they`re going and what he should be doing. He`s definitely excitable and has a lot of energy to burn, so daily walks/runs are a must. I was able to take him to a spacious, fenced-off yard a couple of times and let him off leash. He was really good at staying right up next to me and coming every time he`s called (while still taking the opportunity to get some zoomies out). We also passed a less friendly dog on our way out of the shelter once who began growling and barking at Milo. Milo showed no signs of reactivity or aggression. Those combined experiences lead me to believe he`d be a great off-leash dog if that`s what someone is looking for, but I wasn`t able to test that theory since that is against foster-care rules. There was one day I wasn`t able to take him on any extended walks/runs and then had company over. His excess energy made him a bit much for unsuspecting guests, as he is a huuuuge people-lover. So, make sure you`re letting him burn off some zoomies at some point in the day and try to work on his manners with guests. Other than that, he is one of the best dogs I`ve ever owned/fostered. Cannot recommend enough that anyone looking for a dog gives Milo a chance, they`ll be lucky to have spent some time with this young gentleman.`Meet Milo during Browsing Hours Tues-Sun 11-5 or call our Adoptions Desk to learn more about him.

Story
HI - I'M CECE! I am a 3-year-old Australian Shepherd-Beagle mix in need of a foster or forever home! I was rescued originally from a bad situation in California. From there, I was taken in by a Good Samaritan, but she also had to give me up due to unforeseen circumstances. I'm a great girl - I get along wonderfully with other dogs, and I am a lovebug with people. I would do well with an active person, people or family who wants a dog that they can do things with -- hiking, camping, walking, snuggling. I weigh about 45 lbs. Can you foster or adopt me? Please email for additional information and an application. :)

Story
Misty is looking for an active adopter with another similarly sized dog (50 lbs or so) who could be her new BFF. Misty has engaged in play at the Shelter with another dog (Indy, female “shepsky”). She has seemed to enjoy playing chase and some light wrestling. Misty brings a lot of skills to her next home such as being house trained, riding nicely in the car and knows “sit”, “down”, shake” and “touch”. At this time, Misty would thrive in a home environment where people are around more often than not. Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
