This is Sampson, a black and tan, 4 pound, male chihuahua/terrier mix born on 9/15/21. Sampson loves to be held and he loves to sleep on your stomach. He is a real sweetie but he wants to be the boss. He has a crooked tail that is very cute and adds to his mystique as times were tough for him before he was rescued. He’s completely vetted including a pro heart 6. His adoption fee is $700 and his transport fee is $155. The first step in the adoption process is to fill out an online adoption application. You can find a copy of that application here. We sometimes receive a lot of interest on an animal and can't always reply to each email in a timely manner. An application does not obligate you to adopt from us, but it does show that you are serious about the adoption process. Please remember we are all volunteers. After you submit your application, please allow a few days for a volunteer to review your application. During this time your vet reference will be checked and a volunteer with determine if it is the best match for you and the animal. Applications are not approved on a first come, first serve basis. We match up the best home for the animal, so even if the pet has other applications, this does not mean he/she will be adopted to that home. Once your application has been approved a volunteer with contact you to set up a phone interview. This is the perfect time for you to ask any questions you have about the adoption process and the animal you are interested in.

Meet Spiro, a "Chiweenie (Chihuahua/Dachshund mix) who was picked up as a stray by a rescue person in Texas. He was running back-and-forth across the busy four-lane road - it's a miracle that he didn't get hit by a car. Spiro's Good Samaritan tried every way possible to find his owner but no one claimed him so now he's coming to NJ to join the NorthStar Pet Rescue family. Spiro is 12 to 15 months old and weighs 12 pounds. He's a real sweet boy and cuddle bug but he's very anxious and skittish,  jumps at every noise. He has not shown any aggression, just fear. Unfortunately Spiro has tested positive for heartworm and will be treated at NorthStar's expense so that he may become as good as new! Bartok is a "chill" senior boy who comes to us from a shelter in Texas. He's about 10 years old and weighs about 15 pounds.  Bartok is looking for a loving owner or family who will spoil him! He is housebroken, sleeps through the night with no accidents, loves to go on walks (not a big fan of car rides), and lounging in the sun. He is an expert napper! This bonded pair ended up at a local shelter when their owner entered the hospital and wasn't expected to recover. Sweet and adorable Scrappie is a 12-year-old Cairn Terrier boy (he weighs 30 pounds) and Sofie is an 8-year-old Chihuahua mix named who is a little more than "pleasingly plump" at 33 pounds. We are Sofie and Scrappie, a "bonded pair" of dogs adopted from North Ocean County Animal facility and recently returned when their owner was no longer able to care for them due to his medical condition. Sofie is a 9-year-old cute, adorable, chubby Chihuahua mix and her foster is currently working with her to lose some weight. Scrappie is a 12-year-old Cairn Terrier mix with a personality of his own. Both dogs are friendly, enjoy being petted and will seek attention. Scrappie is vocal and will whimper to be petted while Sofie very nonchalantly nuzzles herself into the center of attention. Sofie has had a few accidents in the house but she has only been with her foster a few days and the foster is still getting used to her schedule. Besides the routine potty schedule, both have come to their foster on a few occasions to be let out. They have been around other dogs and cats in the past and currently live with two other dogs and a cat with no issues. Both dogs are very easy-going and enjoy hanging out with the group. They are friendly and enjoy greeting visitors to the house. Both dogs are also good on leash, easy to handle and would make a great addition to any home.  Scrappie, although he's older than Sofie, is more playful than she is - still lots of pep in this boy's step! They both know some basic commands like Sit, Come, Stay, Down & Shake. Scrappie was not a fan of all the rain we recently had - you can see a photo where he is hiding under a pink blanket because he did NOT want to go out in that wet weather! We feel that they would make good pets for just about any home. They will only be adopted into a home together as they have lived together for many years & are dependent on each other. Look at those amazing ears!! Eros was an owner surrender, along with 8 others of his siblings, parents, who knows. The family had 9 Chihuahuas that they were surrendering to the shelter, and NorthStar stepped in before they were even able to get into the shelter. Eros is now in a foster home in Texas where he has been exploring the entire house without much fear. There are cats in the home & he seems familiar with them but he is afraid of them right now. I see this confident little dog down deep and happy little dog. His tail wags some now that he has been in his foster home for more than a month - he has become a very loving snuggle bug.  Eros has such a gentle soul according to his foster mom and he makes her laugh. He loves to dig around in the blankets and then burrow in them. He usually barks at the door with excitement when people arrive. He wiggles so hard and bounces. And he loves to go on walks - the only thing he doesn't love is being crated & he will express his displeasure. But foster mom tells us he is just a wonderful boy deserving of a wonderful home. Eros is about 8 years old, weighs under 8 pounds and will be coming to NJ soon to find a loving forever home.
