__________
Mackerel arrived safely in Wisconsin on March 21, 2026 with Mutt Life Dog Rescue and is settling into his foster home, where he’s doing well.
Meet Mackerel
Mackerel is an 8-week-old Dachshund/Pit mix puppy who is just starting his life and looking for a loving home to grow up in. He came to the shelter as part of an owner surrender from a backyard breeder dropping off two litters of unwanted puppies.
Shortly after arriving, some of the puppies began getting sick and tested positive for parvo. While many of the puppies did not show symptoms, including Mackerel, they were all treated with antibody therapy as a precaution.
The good news is that Mackerel and the other puppies are now past all of that and doing great. He is healthy, happy, and ready to head north to Wisconsin to find a loving home of his own.
Like any young puppy, Mackerel is playful, curious, and loves attention from people. He is still learning everything about the world around him and will need a family who can help him with the basics such as potty training, crate training, and learning good household manners.
Mackerel would do best with a family ready for all the fun (and work) that comes with raising a puppy. With patience, guidance, and lots of love, he will grow into a wonderful lifelong companion.

ADOPTION PROCESS:
1.) Apply: Fill out an adoption application completely and submit all necessary documents.
2.) Application Decision: approved applicants will be notified via phone call and email.
3.) Foster-to-Adopt Trial Period: After approval, you have the opportunity to do a meet and greet and bring your dog home! You get a 5-day foster-to-adopt (FTA) period to make sure it's the right fit.
4.) Final Decision: By the end of the FTA period, please let us know your final decision to adopt or return the dog to our rescue.
5.) Home Visit: After the adoption process, we conduct a home visit either in person or via Zoom meeting to ensure that everything is going well with the transition and to answer any final questions you may have.
6.) Neuter/spay for puppies: for dogs who are not fixed at the time of adoption, we will reimburse for the procedure once we receive proof of spay/neuter. The procedure MUST be done at HAWS Snip Clinic in Waukesha, WI, or Wisconsin Community Veterinarian Center in Madison, WI. If you would like to go through your veterinarian or another location, we will reimburse $125 once we receive proof of the procedure. We recommend spay/neuter around 6 months old.
**Note: Adoptions are not considered final until the dog is neutered/spayed if applicable**
