Story
Meet Mina - Cocker Spaniel Only those whom submit a completed adoption application after reading Mina's entire profile will be considered Meet Mina! This sweet, timid chocolate merle Cocker Spaniel was surrendered by a commercial breeder after she was retired from their breeding program DOB Feb 11, 2024, Mina is just shy of 2 yrs young, but has spent her entire life in a barn so is very shy with new people and will need a very patient, savvy family whom will understand that it will take time for her to blossom Mina joined us very obese, poor coat condition and badly matted, but is doing great with her gradual weight loss program, and her coat and skin are already improving with her high quality food/supplements in our care MANDATORY: *Mina absolutely requires another suitable canine companion in her new home to help with her confidence and for companionship. She is also great with cats but a cat friend is not an alternative for a canine companion. *Fully fenced secure yard-Mina is too scared to be comfortable going on walks yet but LOVES to run and play in the fenced backyard. This is her happy place. * No children due to her timid nature. She would be absolutely overwhelmed having children in her home * No doggie doors *Pools must be securely fenced in for safety if inground Mina's spay surgery is scheduled for Dec 4th, after which she will be ready to join her new family after she recovers. Notes from Mina's foster family Mina is a gentle, medium-energy girl with a soft heart and a timid spirit who is slowly blossoming in her foster home. She is deeply sweet, playful in her safe spaces, and incredibly affectionate with the people and animals she trusts. Mina will thrive in a patient, quiet home that can help her continue building confidence at her own pace. Daily Routine & Activity Mina loves to run, explore, and play in her fenced backyard. She enjoys doing zoomies—especially when her people arrive home! While she is still too fearful to go for walks, she is working on building trust. At this time, she is not safe on a leash, as she becomes frightened and tries to escape her harness. Her foster family takes her on walks in a large dog stroller to help with her socializing, working on exposure to new sights and sounds due to her flight risk on leash outside of her fenced yard. She enjoys car rides when carried to the vehicle and happily settles once inside. Motivation & Training Mina is selectively food-motivated. She enjoys treats but will only accept them when she is in her safe spots, such as her bed or the couch. She is still learning basic commands and does not yet know sit, stay, come, or similar cues. Her progress will come with patience, encouragement, and consistency. Mina loves chew toys and benefits greatly from access to Kong-style toys and safe chew options. She can be destructive with toys so monitoring for safety and providing appropriate chews such as bully sticks, tendons, Jawgler gelatin chews, beef knuckles etc are ideal. Rawhide is NOT safe for dogs. Social Behavior with Dogs & Cats Mina loves other dogs, both in the home and those she has met elsewhere. She adores her foster sister, follows her around, and offers lots of kisses. She also has another dog friend she plays with at the foster home. She lived harmoniously with a visiting cat for two weeks and co-existed beautifully. Behavior with People Mina is very fearful with new people and will hide when visitors enter the home. With her foster parents—especially when they are sitting or lying down—she is cuddly, affectionate, and joyful. She seeks out closeness on the couch and loves bedtime snuggles and belly rubs. She is still afraid of people when they are standing, but she is bravely making small steps forward, such as approaching the dining room threshold at mealtimes to be part of the activity. House Skills Housetrained: Yes, though she will have accidents if not let out frequently. Crate trained: Yes, and she is relaxed and content in her crate. Alone time: Comfortable being left alone with no signs of separation anxiety. Touch: Enjoys petting and cuddles from her trusted people. Mina occasionally struggles with bladder control, especially when excited or if not taken outside often enough. She benefits from frequent outdoor breaks. Special Notes & Needs Chewing: Mina loves to chew, so a “chew-safe zone” is important. Items like shoes, pillows, and remote controls should be kept out of reach. Hydration: She tends not to drink enough water on her own, so adding water to meals helps prevent constipation and supports hydration. Feeding Diet: 3 oz of Bold by Nature raw food with omega oil, pureed pumpkin, probiotics and hot water added Schedule: Twice daily Temperament Mina is a sweet, sensitive soul who was formerly a breeding dog at a commercial kennel without any positive interactions with humans. She is fearful of new situations and slow to trust, but she is also gentle, silly, playful, affectionate, and eager for love once she feels safe. Her biggest improvements so far include allowing touch without fear and no longer urinating when frightened. She continues to show improved courage and resilience every day but will understandably regress in a new home until she bonds and learns to feel safe with her new family. Transport Mina is fearful when taken out the front door but enjoys car rides once inside. Carrying her to the vehicle helps her feel safe. Ideal Home: A fenced yard for supervised play, zoomies, and outdoor exploration A friendly resident dog to help build her confidence A quiet or low-traffic home (she may bark briefly when her humans return) Patience, gentleness, and a willingness to let her progress on her timeline A safe space for chewing and relaxing Mina will flourish with someone who understands her history and can provide a calm, steady environment full of kindness. Once she trusts you, her warm, silly, loving side truly shines. INTERESTED IN APPLYING? NOTE: *Based on her life expectancy of another 15+ yrs, Mina is not a suitable match for over 65 yr applicants. Our goal for every dog is to be able to live a full active life in their forever home without ever having to be rehomed or having their needs neglected. Our priority is long-term stability and well-being for each dog in one forever home. She does also require lifting and carrying at times so her new family must be able to provide this indefinitely. We require all serious applicants to watched "Petfooled" which is a free documentary at this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XC1rUWWnxI , or on Amazon prime Our motto is "know better/do better" and we ask all adoptive families to be as committed to providing our dogs with quality nutrition as they are to providing love. An adoption application must be completed and approved, followed by quality of care screening through your vet clinic, & home inspection, prior to meeting available dogs. All dogs are placed in loving foster homes during their time with us, we do not have a shelter to visit. We do not allow applicants to visit until pre-approved for adoptions. Our dogs are in private foster family homes, not in a shelter. Hobo Haven is located in St Jacobs Ontario. For approved families, we require in person meetings in St Jacobs ON If you are not willing to drive to this location to meet our dogs after you are approved, please do not apply. We do not meet elsewhere nor deliver dogs. Adoptions within Ontario only Adoption fee: Reduced to $750 (reg $850) due to her timid nature/patience required Includes: Spay, microchip, vaccinations, deworming, flea/tick/heartworm prevention, bloodwork/heartworm testing, and all vet care, high quality food and supplies during their time with us to set them up for a healthy future. We have spent far more than this on her vetting and care. Link to apply https://hobohavenrescue.ca/dog-adoption-application

HEALTH Vaccinations up to date. PREFERS A HOME WITHOUT Other dogs, cats, children, other animals. ADOPTION FEE $500.00 START YOUR Meet Moxi: Female French Bulldog/Boston Terrier mix puppy Introducing spunky, feisty yet sweet Moxi who truly lives up to her name. DOB Aug 16, 2025, Moxi was surrendered to our rescue by a commercial breeder due to her blindness in one eye. PLEASE READ OUR PUPPY ADOPTION POLICY HERE BEFORE APPLYING https://hobohavenrescue.ca/puppy-adoption-policy NO EXCEPTIONS Adoption Fee REDUCED to $500 due to her blindness in one eye (reg $850) -includes vaccinations, microchip, spay surgery, deworming, flea/tick/heartworm prevention and all vet care, food and supplies during their time with us. We have also spent quite a lot on Moxi's ophthalmology appts, testing and assessments. Energy Level: High Personality: Happy, affectionate, cuddly, very high energy, and very playful. Suitability: Best as an only pet-Moxi is not aggressive but she is very high energy and is not good at respecting other pet's boundaries. Not recommended with children under 14yrs ? Daily Routine Adjusting to expected indoor behaviours with consistent verbal redirection. Goes outside every couple of hours for potty training. Has full access to most rooms when supervised, with doors closed as needed for safety. Crate time used for napping, calming, and helping regulate overstimulation. ? Motivation & Training Food motivated: Extremely — great for training! Training status: Learning basic commands; still very much a work in progress. Requires a family home often and committed to supervision, routine, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Needs support learning to self-calm, both indoors and around other dogs. Crate trained: Yes — settles quietly and finds it calming. Leash skills: Not yet established; needs foundational leash training. Handling: Loves being touched, handled, and fussed over (ears, tail, paws, etc.). ? Behaviour With Dogs & Cats With dogs: Friendly but plays extremely rough. Can escalate into a frenzied state while attempting to engage other dogs. Requires human interruption/redirection to prevent over-arousal. Currently not suited to living with another pet due to her play style. With cats: Not aggressive but too rough; attempts to play in a way cats cannot tolerate. ? Behaviour With People Loves meeting new people, both in the home and out in public. Affectionate and enjoys cuddling once settled. Had mild people-guarding tendencies early on, but this has significantly improved with training. ? Potty Training Still in progress. Does not like cold or wet weather and may choose to eliminate indoors. Needs ongoing consistency and supervision. ? Indoor Behaviour Typical busy puppy: will get into anything if not supervised. Needs vigilant monitoring when loose in the home. Benefits from structured downtime — crate time helps her reset. Chewer: Requires appropriate chew items like bully sticks, tendons, and puppy-safe chews. ? Mental Stimulation Needs Very intelligent and will excel with: Training games, Puzzle toys, Enrichment activities, Regular structured routines ? Strengths & Improvements Improving in: Regulation of her frenzied energy during play with expert guidance from her foster mom. Respecting other dogs’ boundaries. Strengths: Affectionate, Eager to learn, Extremely food motivated, No separation anxiety Calm, quiet, and content in her crate ? Transportation: Rides well in vehicles. No motion sickness or travel-related anxiety observed. ? Ideal Adoptive Home-Moxi is not a suitable fit for an inexperience family, ideally a family familiar with terrier temperament and energy level. An adopter experienced with: High-energy puppies Over-arousal behaviours Positive training and redirection Needs a patient, committed human who is firm but kind. Only pet (no dogs or cats). Adults-only home; no young children. Someone home often who can provide: Structure and boundaries. Consistent training, Supervision, Plenty of mental and physical exercise Medical note: Moxi has some congenital (from birth) eye abnormalities, which means her eyes developed a bit differently. This is something she has likely had her whole life. Left Eye: Moxi is fully blind in her left eye due to a congenital malformation. If the eye ever becomes painful, surgical removal (enucleation) may be recommended, but this is not currently needed. Right Eye: Her right eye has vision. It does have some corneal pigmentation and mild cloudiness, likely related to lower tear production and her congenital eye differences. Because of this, her right eye may be at risk for developing secondary glaucoma later in life, so monitoring is important. Current Treatment & Care Medication: Optimmune immunomodulatory eye drops for the corneal pigmentation in a puppy of this age. Once daily Optixcare lubricant 2–3 times daily in both eyes to protect and moisturize. ?? Final Notes Moxi is an incredibly bright, joyful puppy who loves people and thrives with appropriate engagement. With the right guidance, boundaries, and enrichment, she will grow into an amazing lifelong companion. Story
Meet Finley: Male cocker spaniel puppy (blind) Finley is a precious, male Cocker Spaniel puppy born Sept 3, 2025 who was surrendered to our care due to being blind. PLEASE READ OUR PUPPY ADOPTION POLICY HERE BEFORE APPLYING https://hobohavenrescue.ca/puppy-adoption-policy NO EXCEPTIONS ANY APPLICATIONS RECEIVED THAT DO NO MEET THE CRITERIA IN OUR PUPPY ADOPTION POLICY WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. Finley is a friendly, confident, and adventurous young pup who doesn’t let his blindness slow him down one bit. He approaches the world with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a whole lot of heart. Whether he’s exploring the yard, playing with canine friends, or seeking out his humans, Finley brings joy everywhere he goes. View Finley's complete album of videos and photos here https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.803742752276353&type=3 ** MANDATORY Finley requires another suitable canine companion in his home -and ideally a fully fenced yard for him to safely explore supervised. All pools must be fully fenced for safety Dog doors are not permitted Adoption Fee REDUCED to $500 due to Finley's blindness (reg $850) -includes vaccinations, microchip, neuter surgery, deworming, flea/tick/heartworm prevention and all vet care, food and supplies during their time with us. We have also spent quite a lot on Finley's ophthalmology appts, testing and assessments. Energy Level: Medium Crate Trained: Yes Housetrained: In progress Good with Dogs: Yes Good with Cats: Yes Good with People: Absolutely! Special Needs: Blind Daily Routine Finley enjoys several short, fully supervised outdoor sessions throughout the day to explore, sniff, and play. He goes out after each meal and several times between, with outings spaced every 2–3 hours. Inside, he is learning the rules of the home, settling nicely in his crate at night after a few minutes of fussing. Training & Behaviour Finley is blind, but maps spaces quickly and confidently. His foster home keeps pathways consistent, floors clear, and uses verbal cues to help him navigate. Commands like “This way, this way, this way” help direct him, while “Careful!” warns of obstacles. He learns quickly and adapts beautifully. Food Motivation: Extremely! This will help tremendously with training. Commands: Finley is just starting out and hasn’t learned formal cues yet. House Training: Ongoing. He does well when taken out on schedule but doesn’t yet signal on his own. Chewing: Like any teething puppy, everything seems chewable. Redirection to toys and chews works well. Touch Handling: Playful when touched during the day; relaxed handling is easiest when he’s sleepy. Separation: Finley is comfortable alone for short periods (up to 3 hours) and has shown no signs of separation anxiety. Leash Skills: Not yet introduced to walks. Social Skills With Dogs: Finley loves every dog he meets! He can be a bit rough in play due to puppyhood but responds well to canine corrections. With Cats: Very good—he mostly ignores the household cat or offers a quick sniff. With People: Everyone is a new best friend! He greets both in-home and outside visitors with happy enthusiasm. Medical Notes Finley saw Dr Barboza, an opthamologist, for a thorough assessment and testing for his blindness. For anyone seriously interested in adopting Finley, we are more than happy to send the full report to your vet clinic to discuss further with your vet. The primary assessment is anterior segment dysgenesis, a congenital malformation of both eyes, leading to blindness. Secondary glaucoma is questionable. The measured intraocular pressures are elevated but are suspected to be factitiously high due to the structural abnormalities of the cornea and anterior chamber. Microphthalmia (small eye) is noted in the left eye. The patient does not currently appear to be in pain or discomfort from his ocular condition. No medications are being prescribed at this time. The decision was made to avoid potentially unnecessary eye drops as the IOP readings may be inaccurate. Finley is returning for a reassessment to ensure that his eyes are both stable and no further treatment is recommended at this time. His adoptive family will need to have their vet monitor for any changes as he matures. Transportation Finley travels well in a crate and may fuss briefly before settling in for a nap. Strengths Adapts quickly to new environments Excellent at locating people by voice Social, gentle, and eager to bond Playful and brave Sweet, affectionate, and loves being with his “pack” Ideal Adoptive Home Finley will thrive in a home that: Has experience with blind dogs or is committed to learning and supporting his needs Has someone home during the day for his feeding and potty schedule Will continue his training and provide a safe, consistent environment Ideally includes another friendly, patient dog to play with Children must be dog savvy, respectful and over 10 yrs Why You’ll Love Him Finley is an incredible puppy—sweet, adventurous, and endlessly good-natured. He loves to explore and play, but once he’s tired, he’s perfectly content to curl up beside you for a nap. He is happiest when he’s close to his people and will be a devoted companion to the lucky family who adopts him.
