Story
Paddy is a neutered male, Yorkshire Terrier mix puppy DOB July 29/24, current weight approx 6kg
He was adopted briefly but was returned to our care when the dogs in his new home were not at all a good fit , despite initial meetings going well.
Paddy has been back with his original foster for a few weeks now, has attended additional training classes and settled back in nicely.
He is now ready to find his forever home
Paddy's ideal forever home criteria
*Either as a single dog with no cats in the home, or with another suitable canine companion who enjoys playful small dogs and will engage in playtime happily, but is a calm, respectful dog that will allow Paddy to initiate play.
We would consider a family without another dog if they are dog savvy and home often to meet his mental stimulation and training needs.
*Children must be over 10yrs, respectful and dog savvy with previous experience with dogs in the home.
* Mandatory registration with an approved trainer is required to set Paddy up for success with his new family. Paddy has already completed two training courses and has shown himself to be a quick learner.
*Inground/ground level Pools and deeper ponds must be separately fenced from yard
* Someone home often due to his young age
* Due to his young age/life expectancy, he is not a suitable match for older seniors. Our goal for every dog is to be able to live a full life in their forever home without ever having to be rehomed
Your foster dog's energy level: Medium-High
Paddy will wake up on your schedule, he's not one to sleep in on his own.
We take Paddy out first thing in the morning for a pee. In the mornings, he loves to snuggled and play with toys on the couch with us.
Before breakfast we either take Paddy out for a short walk or play in the backyard--- he loves to play and go on adventures.
Paddy is a great eater--- he lovesssss food!
After breakfast, its back outside to do his business. I work from home and Paddy is happy to sleep in the dog bed beside my desk while I work. I take him back outside during my lunch break--- he will run around and explore and play with the other dogs.
In the afternoon he settles right back down and naps in his bed. We try and integrate some training throughout the day like practicing "touch", "sit" and "wait".
Paddy goes outside for another pee then has dinner. Evenings are when Paddy really loves to get going! We take him for a longer walk or play outside in the yard. Once back inside, Paddy with typically play with a toy on his own--- he's very good at tossing them around himself and chasing them! We take him out one last time before bed then bring him upstairs. Paddy likes to sleep on the bed by your legs.
Is your foster dog food motivated? Paddy is very food motivated.
Good with dogs ? Paddy is friends with the dogs in my house.
He lovesssss to play with them however upon being returned to Hobo Haven, through no fault of his own, Paddy is now apprehensive with outgoing playful dogs he doesn't know.
He is fine with laidback dogs or dogs that will play when HE initiates it. We have introduced Paddy to several dogs since being returned, it took him longer to relax around dogs who were more playful and bouncy but he relaxed quite quickly around dogs who weren't interested in him. Some dogs that he meets are not at all a good fit.
Paddy will need work on his confidence and exposure to positive interactions to help him over his apprehensiveness and help him be successful in his life.
Paddy is a people dog-- he loves everyone! Every human is a new best friend.
Good with cats? Paddy is not a good fit for a home with cats or other small animals.
Paddy has not displayed any guarding behaviours.
Housetrained? No
Crate trained? No
Please elaborate on your foster dog's behavior in the crate. Paddy stresses badly if crated, but does well left loose in a dog proofed environment
I leave my foster dog alone for ___h per day. 3
Does your foster dog show signs of separation anxiety? No
Paddy is a good little walker. We are still working on leash skills but so far he has been doing great! He is still nervous and easily spooked on busy streets, and does much better walking on trails and in quieter areas without alot of vehicles and other loud noises.
How does your foster dog react when you touch the ears, tail, paws etc. Please elaborate. Paddy is fine with touching his paws and tail but is very fussy and squirmy when you try clean his eyes and ears. He is food motivated so we try to distract him give him treats to make it positive when we need to tidy him up. He also doesn't enjoy being brushed which is a challenge with a poodle mix coat-- brushing is essential! Again, positive experiences will help him learn that brushing is fun!
Paddy is the HAPPIEST dog I've ever fostered. He is a huge sweetheart that just loves to play and be with you. He gets so excited to see us even if we've only left for a few minutes. He has a lot of energy, keeping him occupied with toys, chewies, walks and play is important.
Areas needing improvement
- Paddy needs further positive reinforcement for accepting bushing and eye cleaning
- Paddy needs to build up his confidence so he is less fearful around bouncy / outgoing new dogs
- Paddy is still learning to do the stairs and needs to be carried up and down but has started to use the stairs with training
- Paddy still has accidents in the house if not taken out at regular intervals or if he is bored
- Paddy loves putting on his harness but gets very skittish when it comes to taking it off- positive reinforcement and treats will help this
- Paddy gets very excited when you come home, he will bark
Medical- Paddy's left eye has a congenital defect making it appear cloudy in the center. This doesn't slow him down in anyway and it does not seem to impact his vision in any noticeable way.
Food amount/type: Paddy eats 1/4 of a raw patty three times a day.
Feeding routines: Paddy eats at 8am, between noon and 1pm and at 6:30pm.
Potty habits: We try to put Paddy out at regular intervals, about every 3 hours or sooner if he gets up and starts sniffing around. He sometimes gets up in the night to pee but removing water after dinner does help this.
Skills/Commands
Sit? Yes
Stay? Yes
Wait? Yes
Lay Down? No
Leave It? No
Off? No
Down? No
Come? Yes
Any other skills/commands? Paddy also knows "touch"
Paddy would love a home where he is welcome to sleep on the bed and snuggle on the furniture with his family. Some nights he does sleep on his bed on the floor but majority of the time he likes to sleep cuddled against your legs.
Strengths/areas they have improved on: Paddy fell right back into his routine when he rejoined us. It was reassuring to see that in the right home he is quickly a happy, fun loving, confident guy.
With positive interactions, Paddy very quickly relaxed around our other foster puppy who he was very unsure about at first.
We have not experienced any motion sickness or anxiety in vehicles.
Paddy's ideal home is with a family who understands he has things he needs to improve upon and is willing to make sure he has the right exposure and training to set him up for success. Paddy needs a family that is active and will take him on regular walks, out on adventures and play with him inside and in the yard. As a young pup it is important he be (positively) exposed to lots of new places, people and situations.
Adoption Fee REDUCED due to Paddy's limited vision in one eye which hasn't slowed him down at all
