Story
Pimienta / Male / 1 Year / 21 lbs / Terrier Mix / Good with Dogs / Good with Older Kids / No Cats Please / From Mexico / Fostered in Whitby Pimienta’s story begins in the middle of a storm, literally. He was found abandoned in a vacant lot during a thunderstorm with his sister, cold, frightened, and searching for safety. While his sister sadly did not survive, Pimienta did, and he has carried that resilience forward, paired with an incredibly soft, loving heart that just wants to belong to someone. He is the kind of dog who wears his emotions openly: sweet, affectionate, a little bit silly, and wonderfully endearing in all the best ways. Pimienta is known for greeting people with immediate kisses, gently nudging his head under your hand for pets, and resting his nose on your knee when he wants attention. He truly believes he is meant to be close to his people at all times, whether that’s curled up beside you or happily soaking in praise. There’s a slightly awkward charm to him, too, especially when he tries to play with other dogs and ends up standing a little too close or making the funniest little noises. He tries so hard, and it’s impossible not to love him for it. With people he knows, Pimienta is affectionate, eager, and thrives on connection. With new people, he can be a little unsure at first. He may observe, move in for a cautious sniff, and then warm up at his own pace, but his natural friendliness shines through quickly. He has had limited exposure to children but has shown gentle curiosity, and with respectful, dog-savvy kids who understand boundaries, he is expected to do well. Pimienta would do best in a home that matches his emotional needs just as much as his physical ones. He bonds deeply and prefers not to be alone for long periods, so a household where someone is home most of the day would help him feel safe and settled. He enjoys a mix of gentle activity and downtime, walks, chew toys, enrichment like Kongs or lick mats, and then plenty of cuddling. He has a low to medium energy level with the occasional burst of zoomies, and he walks nicely overall, though he can pull when excited or curious. He tends to be more comfortable in quieter, low-traffic environments. He is social with other dogs and would likely enjoy having a canine companion, especially one who is patient and doesn’t mind his slightly quirky play style, as long as he still gets plenty of attention from his humans too. A home without cats would be best. He is still working on his training, including house training and basic commands, but he is food-motivated, eager to learn, and responds beautifully to gentle guidance and consistency. Pimienta is looking for a home where he can feel secure, loved, and never left behind again. Someone who understands that he may need a little time, a little patience, and a lot of reassurance, but who will be rewarded with an incredibly devoted, affectionate companion in return. He’s ready for a life filled with soft places to land, people to love, and a future that finally feels safe. If you’re interested in adopting Pimienta, please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form Pimienta’s adoption fee is $850. Story
Lua / Female / 2 years old / 49 lbs / Boxer Mix / Good with calm dogs (male dogs preferred) / Good with cats / Good with older, dog-savvy children / From Mexico / Fostered in Warkworth Lua’s story began in Mexico, where her mother was found tied to a fence on a vacant lot without shelter. She gave birth to four puppies before our rescue partners stepped in, cut her chain, and brought the family to safety. One of those puppies was Lua — and today she’s grown into a vibrant, affectionate dog with a big personality and a heart full of love. Over the past several months, Lua has been working closely with a professional boarding and training environment where she has made wonderful strides in confidence, manners, and trust. The shy, uncertain puppy she once was has blossomed into a playful, loving companion who adores her people and thrives on connection. Lua is bouncy, bubbly, and full of personality — her foster lovingly says she has an “invisible trampoline.” She loves praise and affection and will happily soak up attention from the people she trusts. She’s incredibly loyal and happiest when she’s spending time with her humans. Once Lua warms up to you, she is extremely affectionate and playful, often wiggling with excitement and happily seeking out attention and praise. She has made great progress meeting new people, including men, and while she may still take a little time to build trust with strangers, she continues to show how capable she is of forming positive new relationships. Lua is also a smart and curious girl who enjoys enrichment activities like nose work and training games, and the way to her heart is definitely through dehydrated beef heart treats. In the yard she loves exploring and has even been known to entertain herself chasing frogs around. Lua has shown she can bond beautifully with calm, balanced dogs, particularly male dogs who respect her space. She could thrive in a home with another well-balanced dog or as the only dog, as long as she continues to enjoy structured social opportunities such as pack walks or playdates. Lua would do best in a quiet suburban or rural home rather than an apartment or condo. She has natural guardian instincts and will alert bark when she notices something new, which makes busier environments with shared hallways or elevators more challenging for her. She has made great progress with impulse control and manners, including improved greeting behaviour and calmer mealtimes (she no longer needs a slow feeder!). She sleeps comfortably in her crate overnight and settles well into a routine. Lua could live with older, dog-savvy children (teenagers) who understand how to respect a dog’s space and signals. Like many sensitive dogs, she thrives in a calm home with patient adopters who will continue supporting her confidence and training. What makes Lua truly special is how far she has come. With the right guidance, patience, and love, she has blossomed into a loyal, joyful companion who deeply bonds with her people. Lua is ready to continue her journey in a committed home that will celebrate her progress and keep helping her grow. Due to Lua's unique circumstances, her adoption fee is sponsored by Fetch + Releash. Prospective adopters must commit to attending training sessions with her post-adoption with a certified R+ dog trainer to ensure a successful transition. Story
* KIKA’S ADOPTION FEE IS SPONSORED * Kika / Female / ~3 years old / 60 lbs / Terrier Mix / No dogs, cats, or children / Female-only home / From Mexico / Fostered in Toronto Follow Kika’s journey: @kikaneedsamom Meet Kika — aka Kikachu — your future best friend with the biggest personality and an even bigger heart. Kika is the perfect mix of playful goofball and cozy companion. She’s a certified cozy connoisseur who loves fresh, warm blankets, will carefully select a toy to use as her pillow, and can often be found stretched out dramatically across the floor. She’s also an Olympic-level toy shredder and a dedicated cardboard recycler — but somehow still manages to keep a solid rotation of favourite toys intact. She has full-on conversations with her squeaky toys, knows them all by name, and loves a good game of “rescue the toy from under the ottoman.” She’ll also gently (and persistently!) remind you when belly rubs should absolutely not stop. Kika is currently working with a dog walker weekly, and it’s been a slow, thoughtful build that has been really positive for her. She’s showing that with patience, consistency, and trust, she can successfully build relationships with new people. Kika came to us after she wandered into the home of a shelter volunteer, badly injured and clearly the subject of mistreatment. Despite everything she went through, she somehow knew to find a safe place to ask for help. Today, she is thriving in foster care with steady guidance and has graciously shown us her true, joyful personality. She’s smart, expressive, and full of quirky charm — the kind of dog who keeps you laughing every day. But beyond the silliness, Kika forms deep, loyal bonds with her people. Once you’re in her circle, you’re her person — and she will trust you fully, follow your lead, and look to you for everything. Kika has a working-breed personality — alert, intelligent, and always ready for what’s next. She thrives with structure, routine, and a confident female handler. She enjoys her walks, exploring, loves a good game of ball, and even climbs snow piles like a little mountain goat. She walks well overall, though she can pull at times, and her foster is currently working on introducing a Halti to support her on walks — it’s been introduced and they are continuing to build her comfort with it. Kika is also crate trained and muzzle trained, and already has trusted relationships with both a vet and dog sitter, which will help support a smooth transition into her future home. Kika is looking for a female-only, adult-only home with someone who understands or is open to learning about dogs who need a bit of time to build trust. Understandably, Kika does not immediately trust strangers. She will need an adjustment period where she may show some guarding behaviours, including around food, and will benefit from clear structure, space, and thoughtful handling. These behaviours are not directed at her people, but rather at unfamiliar individuals. Men, in particular, are scary for Kika. While she can pass them outdoors without issue, she is not comfortable sharing her indoor space and will use barking or growling to communicate that discomfort. She does well when crated in another room during male visitors and settles with proper management. Kika is not leash reactive — she does not initiate conflict with other dogs and has remained calm even around reactive dogs. She can enjoy friendly interactions on walks and has made a few dog friends along the way. Kika learned to trust her female foster — which is why we are looking for a similar environment to set her up for success. She is best suited as the only pet in the home, though she can enjoy friendly interactions with dogs out on walks. Kika is a truly special dog who has overcome a difficult past and is now ready for her person — someone patient, understanding, and ready to build a deep, meaningful bond. With the right match, Kika is an incredibly rewarding, loyal, funny, and loving companion who will give you her whole heart. Her foster is happy to support approved adopters to ensure a smooth transition and set everyone up for success. Kika has mild/moderate enamel hypoplasia which is thinning of the enamel on her teeth. Homecare will help with brushing but she may require professional dental cleaning in the future. Kika should avoid hard chews, toys, and treats as her teeth will be more prone to breaking during play. Kika also does best on a lamb protein diet. Kika will also require routine anal gland expression approximately every 2 months. If you are interested in Kika and would like to chat more about whether she would be a good fit for you, please reach out to adopt@fetchandreleash.ca. If you are interested in adopting Kika, please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form Kika's adoption fee has been generously sponsored. ** KIKO'S ADOPTION FEE IS SPONSORED ** Kiko / Male / 9 years old / 68 lbs / Mixed Breed / No Other Dogs Please / Older kids only / No Cats Please/ From Mexico / Fostered in Oshawa ** Follow Kiko’s journey on Instagram @Fostertails_crae_and_friends ** Meet Kiko! Kiko is one resilient guy. Originally from Mexico, he lived alone on a rooftop for most of his life. He stole the hearts of everyone at the shelter and they quickly realized he was a very special boy who deserved a shot at the good life in Canada. Despite everything he has been through, this handsome boy is described by his fosters as sweet, loving, affectionate, eager to please, easygoing, and low maintenance. He has a gentle heart and will thrive once he gets a sense of permanence and belonging in his family. Kiko’s dream date would be playing fetch with his people with breaks to roll in the grass followed by snacks and a big cuddle. Once he's done his zoomies, he'll look at you with his beautiful brown eyes and lay his head on your lap to let you know he wants pets. Kiko gets a couple of good walks per day plus a few shorter outdoor breaks. He walks very well on a leash and enjoys trotting alongside his human. He will match his pace to whoever is walking him, he doesn’t pull and is easily corrected. He is curious and loves to sniff and prefers a quieter neighbourhood where there are not too many loud vehicles or encounters with strangers or other dogs. Kiko does not enjoy meeting other dogs on leash and will require a handler who can advocate for his space and ensure he is not put in an uncomfortable position. In the house, Kiko is a dream. This handsome boy has perfect manners to match his good looks and charms. He loves his humans and wants to be close to them whenever they are around but also does well on his own. When you get home, you'll be greeted by vigorous tail wags and lots of little kisses to express his affection. Kiko is adaptable to a new routine and is very go-with-the-flow. He isn't destructive and is trusted with free roam in the house. If there is any activity or stimulation around, he is very playful. Kiko has several favourite toys and will play with them to entertain himself when left alone. He enjoys chewing on his Kongs (especially when they are stuffed with tasty treats), balls, and stuffed toys. Kiko has been left for more than 6 hours on his own and has been perfectly fine. He calms down quickly and is not crated. He mostly chills out in the area where his dog bed and toys are located or will curl up on the couch and snooze. Kiko doesn’t enjoy being crated, but given his good manners it is not necessary. Kiko settles quickly at night on a dog bed in his fosters’ room and sleeps through the night without issue. Kiko needs slow and proper introductions to new people. He is not a dog that will run up to anyone. He needs to be approached slowly and respectfully and feels comfortable when he can move at his own pace. Kiko warms up quickly and, once he knows and trusts you, is a sweet cuddle bug. Kiko gets along well with older, dog-savvy children but he does enjoy playing rough, so it is not recommended that he plays with younger children unsupervised. Kiko has his basic obedience skills, is very attuned to his people and is eager to please. He pays close attention to body language, voice tone, and eye contact and never wants to do anything that might displease or inconvenience his people. He is sensitive, observant and considerate. While in foster care, Kiko had a growth removed from his leg that was diagnosed as cutaneous hemangiosarcoma, a malignant type of skin cancer. There is a chance that it may return so he’ll need to be monitored regularly. Because these growths can sometimes develop in areas of lighter skin, Kiko should avoid prolonged sun exposure on spots like his belly and inner legs. It’s important to note that Kiko is not palliative—this is not a situation where his time is expected to be short. Many dogs with this diagnosis can continue to live for years with a good quality of life. Kiko is also prone to getting tiny stones in his bladder so needs to stay on a specific brand of food. Kiko is the perfect companion for a single person or adult couple, where he would be the only pet in the home. He would do best in a quiet neighbourhood and would strongly prefer a yard where he could hang out without meeting too many other dogs. Kiko is muzzle trained and needs a family that will advocate for his space when meeting new or unfamiliar people and dogs, and who will help his confidence going up and down stairs. He will also need a family who is committed to working on his leash etiquette, obedience training and overall confidence. Kiko just needs a lot of affection, love, and support from his humans to feel safe. Once he trusts you, he will do anything for you. If you’re interested in adopting Kiko, please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form Kiko's adoption fee has been generously sponsored. Story
Vaquita is available for Foster to Adopt! We'd love to welcome Vaquita into the Fetch + Releash family on May 9th. In order to secure a spot on the flight, she needs a committed foster-to-adopt family. As a foster-to-adopt family, you’ll be expected to take her home that same day. You will then have two weeks to get to know your new furry house guest before committing to adoption. At the end of two weeks, if you choose not to move forward with adoption, we simply ask that you continue to provide a safe and loving home until their new forever family can be found. Each bio was created by our rescue partners based on their interactions with the dogs. Fetch + Releash has a full disclosure policy however we cannot guarantee a dog against parasites or diseases, nor can we guarantee a dog’s nature/behaviour. Many of these dogs are coming directly from the shelter and so you should expect there to be a transitional period. Be prepared to deal with common issues like potty training, leash walking, and socialization. Cat and kid safety assessments are often based on their personality and not necessarily on actual interactions. Where possible, the majority of vetting will be completed prior to coming to Canada, however, foster-to-adopt families may be required to travel to our partner vet Mississauga, ON for further vet care. During your foster-to-adopt trial, you’ll receive the support of a Fetch + Releash mentor to help you through the transition and answer any questions or concerns you may have. Foster-to-adopt families will be required to pay a $200 deposit on the adoption fee and sign our foster-to-adopt waiver in advance. If you choose not to adopt, your $200 will be refunded to you within 30 days of your dog being adopted into a new family provided you see your pup through to adoption. If you choose not to see your dog through to adoption, you will forfeit your deposit. Foster-to-adopt families will be expected to provide their own supplies. Visit https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info for more info on mandatory supplies. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Vaquita / Female / 3 years old / 28 lbs / Tripod / Terrier Mix / From Mexico Vaquita (which means “little cow”) is a gentle, mild-mannered terrier who loves being close to her people. She’s a low-key kind of girl who is happiest soaking up belly rubs, being told how pretty she is (and she really is), and settling in for a cozy nap. Whether it’s sunning herself at the cottage or curling up in cow-print jammies, Vaquita is all about the quiet life. Vaquita came into care after a local rescue group flagged her during a spay/neuter campaign. She had been abandoned when her owners moved, and it was clear she was too timid to safely navigate life on the streets alone. Since then, she has been learning what it means to feel safe. She is social with other dogs and would do well with a calm canine companion, though it’s not required. While she has not been formally tested with children, her gentle nature suggests she would do well with respectful, dog-savvy kids. She has not been tested with cats and is currently looking for a cat-free home. Vaquita is still building confidence in a home environment. She is mostly house-trained and continues to work on leash skills and crate training. She will need a patient, understanding family who can support her as she learns the basics and gains confidence at her own pace. Her energy level sits on the lower end of medium, and she thrives with a calm, predictable routine. Vaquita recently underwent a rear leg amputation on April 1 and is healing well. As a tripod, she is already adapting, but she can tire more quickly and will benefit from a home that can support her with a balanced routine of rest and gentle activity. Vaquita was treated for heartworm last fall, and her most recent SNAP test in March 2026 was negative. She is expected to go on to live a full and healthy life. It is recommended that she be on year-round heartworm prevention medicine. Vaquita would do best in a quiet home where she can move at her own speed. Busy environments and loud settings will likely be overwhelming for her. With time, patience, and a sense of safety, Vaquita blossoms into an incredibly sweet and loving companion who forms deep, meaningful bonds with her people. If you’re interested in fostering with the intention of adopting, please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form Vaquita's adoption fee is $850. Cosmo / Male / 3 Years / 74lbs / Australian Shepherd/Labrador / Dog Selective / Good with Older Children/ Untested with Cats / Fostered in Milton ** Follow Cosmo's journey on Instagram: @theadorableadoptablecosmo* Cosmo is a striking, intelligent Shepherd-mix with a deeply sensitive and thoughtful nature. In a calm, predictable environment, he is affectionate, playful, and forms strong bonds with the people he trusts. When he feels safe, Cosmo enjoys relaxing near his humans, spending time on the couch or nearby on the floor, and engaging with enrichment that allows him to decompress and settle. Cosmo thrives with routine, clarity, and low-pressure interactions. He responds best when given space and choice, and he shows excellent potential when his nervous system is supported. He loves food-based enrichment, stuffed toys, sniffing activities, and long-lasting chews, all of which help him regulate and feel secure. Inside the home, he is calm, house-trained, and not destructive when his needs are met. Cosmo can become overwhelmed in busy or unpredictable environments. He is sensitive to excess noise, movement, unfamiliar visitors, and close proximity to other dogs, and he benefits from thoughtful management that reduces trigger stacking. He does best with calm, respectful dogs when given adequate space and has shown the ability to self-regulate during structured, low-pressure social experiences. Cosmo is not suited to a home with young children, as fast movement and unpredictability increase his anxiety. Cosmo has worked with professional behavioural support and responds best to force-free handling, long-line walks in quiet natural settings, and environments that prioritize emotional safety over exposure. With consistency and continued support, he demonstrates curiosity, connection, and the ability to build confidence at a steady pace. Cosmo is looking for an experienced, patient home that understands sensitive dogs and values calm, predictable routines. His ideal home would be a quiet household — ideally rural or semi-rural — with access to safe outdoor space where he can decompress without frequent triggers. He would do best with minimal visitors and guardians who are committed to continuing his confidence-building, low-pressure lifestyle. Cosmo may thrive as an only dog or with a calm, well-matched canine companion following careful introductions. In the right environment, Cosmo is a deeply loyal and gentle companion — a dog who finds joy in quiet moments, meaningful connection, and the comfort of being truly understood. If you’re interested in adopting Cosmo, please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form. Cosmo’s adoption fee is $850.
