Story
Hammy / Male / 1.5 years old / 53 pounds / Lab Mix / Good with Dogs with Proper Introductions / Good with Cats / Good with Kids Aged 10+ / From Tennessee / Fostered in Toronto Follow Hammy’s adventures on Instagram @twoqueersandafosterdog Meet Hammy! Poor Hammy was surrendered to the pound in Tennessee when his owner could no longer care for him. He has since made the journey to Toronto to find his forever home. Hammy is described by his fosters as sweet, gentle, goofy, and silly. He loves going for walks, sniffing, playing with his stuffies, shredding paper (and toys!), playing fetch, chewing bully sticks, snuggling, and naps. There is not much this happy-go-lucky guy does not like! He currently lives with two cats and enjoys trying to get them to play with him. After all this, he likes to sprawl out in bed with his fosters and sleep quietly through the night. Hammy is very sweet and affectionate with the people he knows. He loves to brush up on you for pets and will follow you around waiting for your attention. He is generally very curious of new people and eager to please. He appreciates a slow approach and does not like when anyone reaches over his head for pets so it is important to advocate for him and protect his space. Hammy has met kids over 10 years old and done well with them. He would do well with older, respectful, dog savvy children who can respect his boundaries. He can get overstimulated and may jump up. He seems interested in kids when out on walks and would likely be gentle and kind to children. Hammy gets three 30 minute walks a day, plus some pee breaks. He also gets indoor enrichment like puzzle toys and bully sticks. Hammy can pull on leash when he gets excited but is working with his foster on loose leash walking. He seems comfortable outside and doesn’t react too much to anything he comes across (except the odd very loud noise). He can sometimes be overeager to meet new people or dogs but his fosters are working on this and practicing “engage/disengage”. Hammy is very good in the house. He is not crated and has been left for up to 2 hours on his own and is slowly increasing that time. He can take a bit to settle but will eventually lay down and rest while his fosters are out. He is has tried to chew things he shouldn’t when he is in a playful mood but is easily redirected. He likes to nap during the day and sleeps through the night in bed with his fosters. Hammy is very dog social and loved playing with other dogs on the farm in Tennessee. Since coming into foster care he has not interacted with any dogs yet. When he sees other dogs on leash he tends to jump up and pull towards them. He clearly wants to engage but needs to learn proper manners and a calmer approach. He would do great in a home with other dogs who are respectful of his boundaries. He would require proper introductions before meeting any new dogs. He currently lives with two cats and is curious and playful with them but mostly leaves them alone. Hammy is working on basic obedience but his current training mostly focuses on loose leash walking and getting his attention while out on walks. He is working on polite greetings and leash walking. Hammy is potty trained. Hammy’s perfect forever family would be one that is patient and has time to focus on his training. He needs a family that can provide lots of walks, adventures, and hikes, as well as enrichment. He would do best in a family that is knowledgeable about canine body language. He would do best in a home with a yard where he can get some zoomies out and would prefer to be in a quieter area rather than right downtown. Hammy is a total sweetie and a joy to be around. He is silly and goofy and has a heart of gold. He is eager to please and just wants love. His future family will be very lucky to get him. Hammy has undergone treatment for heartworm. He does not require much in the way of special care but he will need to stay on a heartworm prevention until he has had two negative heartworm tests at least six months apart. Fetch + Releash will cover the cost of the heartworm prevention for the first six months as well as the follow up heartworm test(s), provided they are done at our partner vet clinic. The adoptive family will then be responsible for covering the cost of the next six months of the heartworm prevention medicine. If you’re interested in adopting Hammy, please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form Hammy’s adoption fee is $850. Sonja's journey to a better life began when she was discovered in a residential area in Mexico, scavenging for food in garbage bins. She was emaciated, and covered in fleas. A compassionate lady came to her rescue and, recognizing Sonja's need for care and love, brought her to the shelter. Sonja is a gentle soul and is described by her foster as loving, sweet, protective, and timid. She loves cuddling with her known people, occasionally chewing on an antler, and sleeping on soft places like her bed or the couch. She will curl up beside her foster and nudge her hand with her nose for more pets. Sonja is still adjusting to her new world and is quite nervous and timid when outside. She gets nervous around new people, especially men and may growl, or bark, if she thinks they are approaching her. Sonja gets 2-3 walks a day of around 30 minutes each. She will pull if she is scared and try to get away. Sonja prefers quiet areas over busy and loud ones. She has shown signs of being fearful of noises such as people, cars and bikes. Sonja is doing well going out on the same routes and getting used to her new world but will need time and patience to feel confident in a new space. Sonja is skittish during decompression but once she gets comfortable she trusts her humans. Her adoptive family will need to work on showing her calmness. Sonja enjoys playing fetch and chase so don't be surprised if she tries to convince you to keep playing. When in a backyard she will need supervision as she loves to dig. If asked to stop, she usually listens. Her foster parent is working on recall using a squeaker and providing high value treats, she is learning very quickly. Sonja’s ideal forever family would be a quiet family in a quiet neighbourhood. She is looking for a true love kind of deal with lots of cuddle time. She’s content with a few short walks a day but would appreciate a yard so she can sit outside somewhere quiet and familiar. Sonja is good in the house and very polite. She may briefly whine when crated but settles down quickly and is usually calm for up to 5 hours. Her foster finds that she enjoys being gated more than she does crated, so this is something that her adoptive family may want to consider. She hasn’t chewed anything and does not counter surf. She is very respectful of her foster moms belongings. Sonja sleeps in the crate overnight without issue. Sonja is still working on basic training. She knows her name, sit, paw and wait so far. She is quite food motivated so should pick up basic commands quickly. Sonja is dog-selective. She has happily met some dogs, but with others, she has barked and lunged if they get too close. She could potentially live with another dog but will require proper introductions. Sonja would do best in a home without any cats. Sonja has not met any children but likes a calm and predictable environment so would be best in a home without young children. If you're searching for a loyal, affectionate, and active companion to be a cherished part of your family, Sonja is ready to fill that role. Her resilience and loving nature will warm your heart and bring joy to your home. Adopt Sonja, and you'll have a devoted and loving friend for life. Sonja is a flight risk and our top priority in her furever home is safety. Her forever family must take precautions to keep her safe and secure, including the purchase of a GPS tracker which will be required for adoption. Sonja has Enamel Hypoplasia which is the thinning of the enamel on her teeth. Homecare will help with brushing, but she may require professional dental cleaning in the future. Sonja should avoid hard chews, toys, and treats as her teeth will be more prone to breaking during play. If you're interested in fostering with the intention of adopting Sonja, please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form Sonja's adoption fee is $250. Meet Red, the total package. Good with all people, including kids, Red loves cuddles, going for walks, and giving everyone he meets a big ol’ kiss. He’s always down for a game of tug-of-war or a chew toy. He’d love to share a bed with you but can also sleep in his own bed, outside of a crate, without issue. Red plays well with other dogs and will adjust to their play style, without being too rough-and-tumble. He hasn’t lived with cats and a cat-free home is recommended at this time. Red also enjoys solo play including enrichment activities like puzzle toys and kongs. Being part hound, Red loves to use his nose and although unintentional, it could cause him to wander. Future adopters may want to get him a GPS tracker for an extra safety precaution. Red is very food motivated and is slowly coming along with obedience training. He currently knows ‘sit’, ‘paw’, ‘twirl’, and ‘crate’. Red understands that his crate is his safe space and even runs in there while his meals are being prepared. Red is potty-trained but may need a few days to adjust to a new environment – accidents or “marking” can happen during this transition period. Red has been trusted to be left alone outside his crate when his foster is gone and has shown no destructive behaviour. Red could do well with city, suburb, or country life! This outdoorsy man loves a neighbourhood stroll or hanging in the backyard. He walks politely but would really like to follow his nose or say hi to everyone around him. Red’s exercise needs include a 30-60 minute walk a day with some added potty breaks. He does best in the car after being well exercised and going to a fun place, he has had some car sickness while returning from the vet, due to the stress. Prior to coming into care, Red tested positive for Ehrlichia which is a tick-borne infection and is not contagious. A CBC was performed to see if there is an active infection. Red's CBC came back indicating that there is no active infection. It is recommended that Ehrlichia positive dogs get an annual blood test to monitor and that pre-op blood work including a CBC test and platelet count be performed before any surgeries or dental extractions. If you want a little Red added to your life, apply to adopt! If you’re interested in fostering with the intention of adopting Red, please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form Red’s adoption fee is $500. This lovable pup was surrendered alongside his sister and is looking for his forever home. Nolan, thankfully has never felt the sting of abandonment, finding safety and love with our rescue partner. His boundless energy means he spends most of his day playing with his sister but he will stop for a much deserved nap in the sun or will revel in attention and loving given to him by his rescuer. Friendly to the core, Nolan is the epitome of a typical pup—playful, affectionate, and oh-so charming. While he will need a bit of guidance in the training department, his youth and eagerness to please make him a quick learner. He has never lived in a home and has only known a life in a kennel, so patience will be needed as you work on potty training, crate training and learning to walk on leash. He is medium to high energy as most puppies are and will need at least two walks per day along with playtime and even some canine enrichment. Keeping a puppy busy and fulfilled helps keep them out mischief. Although Nolan may be a bit excitable around small children, Nolan's loving nature shines through. He would do great in a home with respectful dog savvy children who will respect his space as he adjusts to his new home. This easy going boy is likely to adapt well to any type of home as well as making a great addition as a second dog. Nolan would also thrive as a solo dog but would benefit from being socialized and having other canine friends. He has not been cat tested so he is looking for a cat free home at this time. Nolan is ready and waiting to be apart of all of life's adventures with his new family. Everyone who has had a hand in Lexi’s rescue story agrees this is one special lady. She is incredibly tender, loving, and sweet. She is also curious and loves her little toys and getting cuddles from her humans. Lexi is much smaller than her photos make her look and is very calm. Lexi is still figuring out her new surroundings and is still fearful of the big wide world. She uses her crate as a safe space and will watch the goings-on from there with curiosity. She is starting to come out of her shell and has the cutest little personality. She clearly loves humans and is very appreciative of their patience while she develops her confidence. Lexi is still learning to venture out of her crate but when she’s feeling brave she loves fetch, tug, chewing on Kongs, treats, toys, and cuddles with her trusted people. Lexi has recently discovered the joys of fetch and she loves it! She needs very patient people who are willing to help her continue to build her confidence and realize that she is safe in the world. She is shy with new people and will "alert bark" to let you know she's noticed someone new. She settles quickly when comforted and if the new person respects her boundaries she will eventually accept treats and cuddles. Once Lexi meets someone about 10 times, she will bark less when they arrive and settle even quicker. Although she barks upon each entry, Lexi is ultimately quite tolerant of having people in the house. She has been present with a small party of 12 people, where she hung out in her crate enjoying her space. Lexi is still working on her confidence to go out in the world. She currently spends a lot of her days lounging in her crate, but more and more she has started exploring the wider house, playing with her foster sibling, and wandering over to say hello when her foster works from home or for end-of-day cuddles on the couch. She is confident in a space she is familiar with, and that area is getting bigger each day. When she gets excited she does a little toe tap dance and even has some zooms. She has lots of activities that she enjoys including toys, Kongs, and chews. Lexi is fearful of new things but she is improving with each day and it is wonderful to see her personality coming out. Lexi is very polite in the home. She can be left alone and is not destructive, she just stays settled in her crate which sometimes takes about 15 minutes for her to calm down. She sleeps through the night without issue. Lexi is potty trained but is hesitant to go outside on walks. With the guide of her trusted people, she is beginning to go on more walks each day! She is consistent with her potty training at home, but adopters will need to be prepared for accidents as she transitions into a new home as well as, continuing to build her confidence and trust before they expect her to go on walks. She has been attending a dog training facility which seems to be helping her gain confidence. She is now starting to follow her foster sister out into a fully fenced porch and is learning that outside is where she is to go potty. She enjoys going to the washroom without a leash. She is showing more success each day. As Lexi's confidence grows, outdoor potty training should be intuitive for her, but will take some time. Lexi needs an adopter who is dedicated to rehabilitating a fearful dog. Her adopter will need to be committed to going at her speed but with patience and understanding we are already seeing great progress with Lexi. Lexi currently lives with another dog and they love playing together! She has also met another balanced dog and was very interested in him. Lexi shows more confidence when she has another dog around. Based off of this, we feel she would do well with another resident dog who can show her the ropes but she'd also be successful as a solo dog with trusted humans. Lexi has not met any cats but would likely be fine with one in the home as she seems pretty passive about other creatures. She briefly met a small child and was very calm and watched the child from her crate. Additionally, Lexi was dog-sat by a family with an 11-year-old and 14-year-old. She was very fearful in the new environment but slowly warmed up to these girls because they respected her space. However, rambunctious children would not be good for Lexi. She could live with older, respectful kids who understand her boundaries. Lexi loves to do training in the house with her trusted person. She has learned sit, down, bow, stand, foot target, go to mat, and she even goes through a small tunnel. Since Lexi prefers to be in the house than outside, training is a great way to support her enrichment. Lexi is currently signed up for an obedience class. She likes her trusted people and is eager to please so will likely be very trainable. Her primary goal is to overcome her fear and gain confidence and she is working with a professional behaviourist trainer on this and will require multiple meet and greets with potential applicants. Lexi needs a forever family who is very patient and will give her lots of time and space to become comfortable enough to open up and reveal her lovely personality. Her forever family will need to continue to work on her confidence using positive training methods and likely the support of a behaviourist trainer. Lexi is an amazing dog who is working very hard to become her best self. Her journey will be incredibly rewarding for the right family. Lexi would do best in a quiet house, in a rural or quiet area. She would also benefit from having a fenced in yard. Lexi is currently on medications to help with her anxiety including zylkene and clomicalm. Some combination of anti-anxiety medications is likely to be needed for the foreseeable future. The approximate cost of these medications is currently just under $300 per month. She has also shown severe stomach intolerance to a few different proteins in her diet so this is something adopters should be aware of. Lexi's fosters will provide a list of safe foods and treats to the adoptive family to assist with a smooth transition. Lexi is a flight risk and our top priority in her furever home is safety. Her forever family must take precautions to keep her safe and secure, including the purchase of a GPS tracker which will be required for adoption.. If you’re interested in foster with the intention of adopting Lexi, please apply at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form Lexi’s adoption fee is $500.
