Meet Benny! He's a 1-2 year old Super Mutt about 80 lbs. This boy has a big personality and is all about balls, pools & having fun in the corral. He recently got a day out of the Dog Pound. This is what his handler had to say: "Benny easily loads in the truck bed, hooks up nicely and road extremely well to town. Hes very interested in other dogs, but did not have the chance to meet any on this day. Benny should have some exercise before starting his leash obedience lessons as its obvious Benny is used to being the leader on the line and pulling people along which is not ideal with his strength abilities. Benny shows he's capable of learning, but he'll need a calm consistent handler to get him to give in to the leash pressure. He does very well when you stop to talk with someone and will just lie down while you chat." Benny passed his cat, kid, and crate testing. He's a quick learner but is extremely strong on a leash and needs a strong consistent handler. We think he'd be happier hanging in the back yard with a kiddie pool instead of walking around town. Meet Appleton! Appleton came into the Dog Pound with his buddy Trixie (also available for adoption) after his owner passed away. He's 8 years old and just under 20 lbs. He is currently in a foster home with Trixie and several other small/medium sized dogs. This is what his foster mom had to say. “Appleton is a fairly laid-back kind of fellow. He likes to know what’s going on around the house and will follow his people and other dogs around so he doesn’t miss anything. He greets us with enthusiastic barks when we come home and likes a few pets of acknowledgment as well. Meal times are a favorite as well as a nice nap in a cozy spot. He goes potty outdoors and has not used a potty pad. He’s okay in the car. He prefers to be close to one of us. Appleton is great walking with different dogs. No reactions to fence barkers or cats running across the road. He just likes walking, sniffing and marking.” Don't let his age fool you, he walked almost 2 miles on a recent pack walk. Appleton needs a home with a dog buddy. He passed his cat and kid test and did great meeting other small dogs at a recent adoption event. Meet Topper! This dapper gentleman came in after a good-hearted citizen found him wandering around. His microchip information did not allow us to locate an owner. We believe he was dumped. Topper laid in his kennel for about a week completely shut down and wondering why he was at the Pound. Then one day he said, "well screw it…my past is my past & now I want a new family." Topper currently weighs about 74 lbs, we think he's around 5 years old and his breed is a mystery. He likes to fetch and will drop the ball for you, passed his kid testing, enjoyed the obstacle course, and will tolerate a bath. Topper needs a home with no cats. One of our volunteers took him to the beach and this is what she had to say. “Topper assured me that even though it was hot out and he was a big old black dog he would love to go and put his toes in the sand, so that is exactly what we did. He walks nicely, he really didn’t react to much of anything. What a good old guy, he reminds me so much of my Beauceron mix. But his tail looks like an Irish wolfhound. He would be a fun one to find out just what he’s made of.” DNA results are in! German Shepherd, Australian Shepherd, Border Collie, and Golden Retriever were some of the 10 breeds detected in Topper's DNA! Meet Buford! He's a large young adult mix, about 2 years old and 75 lbs. He enjoys a nice game of fetch, but the drool is real! He would do best in a home with no children or cats. Anyone looking for a Scooby-Doo? Buford is looking for an adventure buddy! He got a field trip out of the Pound and this is what his handler had to say. “Buford easily loads into the bed of a truck and rides nice and quiet. Buford will sit on a verbal command with a hand signal. When at the park, Buford really likes to follow his nose while exploring and will chase birds if they are close enough. He started to learn a recall and appreciates praise with affection for reward. Buford has no formal leash training and is puppy minded in a big boy body, so quite a bit of redirection with slight corrections was needed to get him to walk next to his handler's side which he started to do nicely on a loose lead while walking through town. He did well when we started jogging, enjoying the pace. Buford shows willingness to learn and seemed happy and interested in meeting new people. He’s a sweet boy that will develop nicely with kindness and consistency in his life.” Buford is a goofy, slobbery guy that will make you laugh daily. Del Norte County Animal Control 2650 W.
