Before coming to Melissa’s Second Chances, Gus spent his entire life outdoors — no shelter, no soft bed, no affection. And yet, despite everything he missed early on, Gus absolutely adores people and is eager to connect with anyone willing to give him time and kindness. Gus is energetic, playful, smart, and extremely treat-motivated. He’s still learning basic manners simply because no one ever had the chance to teach him — but he is already making huge progress in a short amount of time. He’s eager to learn, quick to pick things up, and clearly wants to do the right thing. Because Gus is still learning how to regulate his excitement, he can sometimes jump or get a little mouthy when overstimulated. For that reason, he’ll do best with a family who can offer structure, patience, clear guidance, and plenty of exercise. A fenced yard or active lifestyle would be a big plus for this energetic young guy. 🐶 Other Important Notes About Gus: • Potty trained and crate trained • Can be vocal in his crate at the shelter due to stress • Very affectionate and people-focused • Great with children • Still learning leash manners 🐕 Dog & Pet Considerations: Gus did not have early socialization with other dogs. Chase does well with our cat and I've seen him play well with small dogs. He does have big dog fear aggression. I asked previous owner if he had been bitten by a big dog or a wild animal, they said no. Chase has been a part of our family for 3.5 years and he isn't as reactive with big dogs as he used to be. That's to say, if he is a good distance he doesn't growl and lunge as much. Chase needs an experienced adopter with plenty of room to roam in his own private yard without big dogs nearby. I have talked with a couple of trainers and they think it's likely he can be trained out of his fear aggression. This would be from a knowledgeable owner or trained professional. He loves people and attention. I would caution that he isn't in a home with small children just because he hasn't lived with young children in our home or with original owner. He really is very sweet like Golden Retrievers are known for, he just has some special needs.
