Wezley is about 4 years old, just over 20 pounds, and fully aware that he has opinions.He came to us after being relinquished because he started resource guarding his previous owner from her husband. Wezley takes his people very seriously, what can he say! In the right home, this is something that can be worked on. He is currently on medication for anxiety, and with structure, training, and continued socialization, he has a lot of potential to improve.Now that you know the serious part, here’s the real Wezley:He is a velcro pug in the truest sense. He wants to be near his person, always. He loves cuddles, sunshine, car rides, walks, running around, and rolling in grass like it’s his job. Then he’ll flip the switch and happily go off to sleep on his own like nothing happened.He also knows a ton of cues already: sit, stay, down, spin, roll, speak, wait, shake, outside, and all variations of “food” and “treat.” He is very smart and very food motivated, which is a big advantage for continued training.He does have some things he’s not a fan of, including nail trims, ear cleaning, loud noises, some male humans, and some larger dogs. So he’ll do best with structure, clear boundaries, and someone who understands dog body language and management.Since being with us, Wezley has actually done well with other dogs and all the people he's met! He can groom and relax with other dogs and enjoys being part of a calmer group energy. He also really likes people and is very into attention and belly rubs once he trusts you.Wezley is a lot of dog in a small body. Meet Sidekick! 22 pounds and 5 years old, he first came through a local shelter way back in 2022. At the time he was just a normal happy Pug who was adopted and went off to start his life. But four years later he found himself back at that exact same shelter except this time, he was a completely different dog.He was having a very hard time keeping his balance. His back legs stood unusually wide apart, his steps were exaggerated and unsteady, and every now and then he'd lose his footing and take a tumble. Even eating could be tricky because he gets little tremors when he's trying to reach his food.The shelter was concerned and overwhelmed by his condition, so we brought him into Pug Nation and started looking for answers. Sidekick eventually had an MRI, and unfortunately, it gave us one. His cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for coordination and balance, has undergone degeneration. His condition is called cerebellar abiotrophy, a progressive disease that causes the cerebellum to gradually deteriorate. There isn't a treatment that can reverse it, and eventually his condition will progress.We can't tell you is exactly when, Sidekick could have a limited amount of time. But he could have years. We simply don't know what his timeline will look like. What we do know is what Sidekick is doing with the time he has right now. He's living. And he's really, really good at it.Sidekick is curious about everything. He loves attention and absolutely melts when someone gives him affection. He's a cuddler. He's a sweetheart. He's mellow, gentle, and genuinely happy to be around people. And despite the fact that his body doesn't always cooperate with him, Sidekick doesn't seem particularly interested in letting that stop him from enjoying himself!He gets along wonderfully with other dogs and has been great with everyone he's met. He isn't looking for a complicated life. He wants someone nearby, a comfortable place to rest, some affection, and the chance to be included. Sidekick is a special-needs dog, and his future home will need to understand that his condition is progressive. He needs a patient person who won't mind helping him navigate his environment and who can give him the supervision and care he'll need as things change. Ideally, his person won't be gone for long hours and will either have experience with special-needs dogs or be willing to learn.Because of his prognosis, Sidekick is available either as a long-term foster or through a hospice adoption. We know the word “hospice” can sound heavy. But just look at Sidekick! Right now, he's not thinking about the future. He's thinking about who's going to pet him. He's thinking about what that noise was. He's thinking about whether someone has snacks. He's thinking about what he can investigate next! He's just a happy little dog who wants to be loved.And if his time is shorter than we'd like, then we'd like every single day of it to be full of soft beds, warm laps, gentle hands, good food, and someone telling him what a good boy he is. Kelvin is not an easy dog to write about, because his story is complicated and we refuse to reduce him to the worst moments of his life. He is about 8 years old and was found roaming the streets before being impounded. At the shelter, they reported that he was behaving aggressively and told us he would be euthanized. We knew he was a difficult case. We also knew we had to go get him to give him a chance at life.Kelvin is deeply afraid. We cannot know exactly what happened to him before he came to us, but his most serious behavior occurs almost exclusively when someone tries to put a leash or harness on him. In those moments, his fear and anxiety take over. He may circle, redirect toward his own tail, or strike out at the person handling him. His tail also appears to have been partially amputated in the past, which makes his fixation on it even more concerning.Outside of those situations, Kelvin can be a genuinely sweet boy. There is a softer dog in there who wants connection, but certain things clearly make him feel unsafe. He is not walking around looking for trouble. He has very specific triggers, and right now he does not know how to cope with them.We need to be extremely clear that Kelvin is not a dog for a first-time owner, he needs someone with experience handling fearful dogs, plus the time, patience, training, and willingness to move entirely at his pace. He should not live with small children, and we believe he will do best as the only dog in the home.Kelvin may never become the kind of dog who wants to be picked up, passed around, or immediately cuddled by strangers. That is okay. A good life does not have to look the same for every dog. We truly believe Kelvin can have a safe, comfortable, quality life with the right person.Kelvin does not need someone who expects him to be perfect. Meet Juanita! When this little 1.5-year-old, 15-pound girl arrived at a local shelter, she was in pretty rough shape. She was emaciated, had lost most of her fur from severe flea allergies, and was dealing with both roundworms and Giardia. It was obvious she hadn't been getting the basic care she needed for a very long time.We were alerted to her situation and couldn't leave her there, so we rushed over and brought her to Pug Nation. And just look at her now! Juanita has been putting on weight, her fur is growing back, and she's cleared both parasites. She's feeling so much better, and apparently her favorite way to celebrate being healthy again is by running around like a tiny maniac. Because Juanita is FUN.She is peppy, playful, curious, and has an almost ridiculous enthusiasm for life. She loves running around, playing with her dog friends, and making sure she is included in whatever is happening. She gets along great with other dogs and absolutely loves people.And then there is the food. Juanita is extremely food motivated. Extremely. We suspect she would like us to emphasize this part of her bio, because she has made her feelings on snacks very clear. Treats are basically the fastest way to get her attention and we have a feeling she would be an enthusiastic student for anyone interested in teaching her some tricks.But what really gets us about Juanita is that after everything she went through, she is still just so happy. She doesn't seem interested in holding a grudge or spending her days wondering why things were so hard. She's busy being a young dog. She's busy playing, eating, making friends. She's busy enjoying the fact that she finally feels good.The only thing Juanita hasn't gotten yet is the part she's been waiting for: her own family. She deserves a home where good food is plentiful, where she can run and play, where someone will take care of her skin and keep her healthy, and where she can finally stop wondering what happens next. They love naps, cuddling, and lounging beside each other with no pressing obligations. Then someone brings out the toys.Despite being 10 years old, Jessy and Bullseye go absolutely bananas over stuffies. The transformation is immediate and honestly incredible to watch. They'll play together, but true happiness is achieved when each dog has a squeaky toy of their own to gnaw on side by side. They share a life. They'd prefer not to share custody of one stuffed animal.The pair also gets along well with other dogs and has an overall calm, friendly nature. They aren't looking for a nonstop social calendar.
