Story
This week on Muttville’s Most Marvelous Makeover, we have Grover, a black and tan terrier-type whose overgrown eyebrows enfold sweet soulful eyes and whose caramel snoot hides a mouth that may be missing part of his jaw, but never misses any of the treats. This sweet senior boy has put a lot of work into his before photo in order to make quite a splash with his after, and we’re all eagerly awaiting his final reveal. While Grover may currently be giving ugly duckling, we know he will blossom into the swan he’s met to be after a quick jaunt to the groomers. Grover’s charisma overshadows his looks, however, and he’ll know you love him for his personality. Come meet this charming little scruff today! Here's some notes from his foster: Grover is a gentle and curious boy-- I love watching him explore outside, and how excited he gets when he encounters new dogs and people. He LOVES food and is a bit of a messy eater-- but you won't mind the clean up when you see how thoroughly he enjoys himself. Grover is going to do great in a home that gives him lots of love and patience.

Rescued from the shelter, Paperback came into foster care shy and unsure, but beneath that cautious exterior is a truly gentle soul who is learning that the world — and the people in it — can be kind.   Paperback’s days follow a comforting routine that helps him feel secure. He wakes up around 7:00 a.m. and heads into the backyard for a quick potty break, then settles onto his favorite bed to calmly observe the morning activities around him. Breakfast is at 8:00 a.m., followed by a few hours of napping. Later in the day, he enjoys spending time in the yard, where he likes to sunbathe and occasionally sniff around. His afternoons include more rest, short training sessions, and quiet companionship. Dinner is at 6:00 p.m. (he can be a little picky and may skip a meal now and then), and by 9:00 p.m. he’s happily curled up on his favorite bed next to his people for the night.   When Paperback first arrived, he was trembling and frozen with fear, unsure of what was expected of him. Rather than fleeing, he would quietly stay in place, hoping for gentleness — and that gentleness has made all the difference. In just a week, he has shown beautiful progress. He has learned that treats, soft voices, gentle pets, and slow movements are good things. He now approaches when a hand is offered, carefully but willingly, and has even begun to enjoy very soft, gentle snuggles. One of his sweetest habits is coming over to sniff feet when someone is sitting nearby, a quiet way of saying he wants to connect.   Paperback is a thoughtful observer and a willing learner. He loves treats and is motivated by them, which has helped him engage in training even when he feels unsure. While he isn’t a Velcro dog, he does enjoy knowing where his people are and may softly whine for a few seconds if someone leaves the room. He is content spending time relaxing on his bed or in the yard, and his most energetic moments come when treats are tossed and he happily trots off to collect them.   He currently lives with a small, confident resident dog and has been learning by watching him. Paperback takes cues from this dog to better understand humans and routines in the home, and he has begun eating meals alongside him and even sniffing toys during playtime. A confident, playful canine companion could be a wonderful influence for him in his future home.   Paperback is fully house-trained and has had zero accidents in his foster home. He does not chew, dig, bark, or display destructive behaviors. In fact, his foster has yet to hear him bark at all — he communicates instead with the occasional soft whine when he needs something or feels momentarily unsure. He was previously fostered with a cat and is an option for a cat-owning home as well.   Leash walking is still a work in progress, and Paperback hasn’t gone on formal walks yet. For now, he feels safest enjoying yard time and building confidence at his own pace. With patience and continued positive reinforcement, his comfort with the leash can grow just like the rest of his skills have.   Paperback does well with respectful children and is especially comfortable around calm energy. He is less nervous around older kids who understand how to give him space and allow him to approach on his own terms.   The ideal home for Paperback is one with patient, understanding adopters who are willing to continue helping him come out of his shell. A calm household, children over 8 who can respect his boundaries, and possibly a confident canine companion would be wonderful fits for him.   What makes Paperback truly special is the sweetness he carries beneath his shyness. He is learning to trust again, and each day brings small but meaningful victories. One favorite moment is his morning potty routine, when he bursts into brief, joyful zoomies before trotting proudly back into the house, clearly pleased with himself.   Paperback is a tender-hearted dog with so much love to give. With patience, kindness, and time, he is blossoming into a loyal, affectionate companion — and the best chapters of his story are still ahead.February 12, 2026, 1:22 am

To be considered for adoption, please submit an application in advance at https://www.dpsrescue.com/adopt/dog-application/. Adoption fee: $700 Meet Hedgehog, affectionately known as “Hedgie,” a 10–12 month old Yorkie type mix weighing 12.8 lbs who proves that sometimes the quietest pup in the room is actually the brightest spark waiting to shine.   Hedgehog was rescued from a shelter where he had been living in a room with several other dogs. While the environment could have made any young dog withdrawn, Hedgie stood out immediately — he was the friendliest one there. He came right up for treats, climbed straight into our laps, and offered the sweetest little kisses, as if to say, “I’m ready. Pick me.” That open-hearted spirit has only continued to blossom in foster care.   A Typical Day with Hedgie Hedgehog starts his day around 6:30 AM with a quick bathroom run, followed by breakfast at 7:00. After eating, he relaxes, plays with his toys, or naps until late morning. Around 11:00 AM to noon, he heads out for a 20–30 minute walk to stretch his legs and explore. He enjoys a light snack afterward, then rotates between playtime and snoozing until his evening walk around 5:00 or 6:00 PM. Dinner is served at 8:00 PM, followed by more relaxing, toy time, and a final bathroom break around 11:00 PM. If there’s time, he happily accepts an extra evening stroll. He is currently working on crate training. With a little brief protest, he’ll settle in for short daytime stints, but he much prefers snoozing in his cozy dog bed outside the crate at night — and he sleeps through the night beautifully.     When Hedgie first arrived, he was sweet but hesitant. He didn’t initiate much contact and didn’t even know how to play with toys. He was nearly housetrained, though! Within just a few days, once he realized he was safe, his true personality emerged. Out came the playful, puppyish energy. He discovered toys. He discovered fetch. He discovered that cuddling might be his life’s calling. He is a total snuggler — a true cuddlebug who loves being close to his people. During his first week, he was very much a velcro dog, following his foster from room to room. Now, he’s gaining confidence and learning that short separations are okay. You can see him growing more secure every day.   One thing that has never changed? His love of food. Hedgie is always ready for a meal, a snack, or a training treat. He has perfected the soulful “please may I have that?” expression. The upside is that he is extremely trainable. He learned “sit” in one day and “down” the next. He is sharp, eager, and impressively fast at picking up new commands.   Energy and Play Style Hedgehog is playful and energetic with definite puppy vibes. He loves fetch, run-and-chase games, puzzle toys, and interactive play. He enjoys walks and exploring the world. While he can happily nap for long stretches during the day, he is more active than sedentary and thrives with engagement and mental stimulation. He likes to be part of whatever his people are doing and brings a lively, joyful energy into the home.   Leash Skills and Social Life On leash, Hedgie is enthusiastic. He tends to walk ahead and has strong opinions about where he’d like to go, so he is currently working on heeling and reducing pulling. He loves to chase small birds and squirrels and does bark at most other dogs when out on walks- but that's just his way of saying hi! This is an area where he’ll benefit from continued positive training and consistency, and given that he's very treat-motivated, training should be a breeze!   Living in an apartment complex has given him exposure to many people and animals. He can be selective at first — he warms up quickly to some people, while others (including some children) may get a bark initially. The good news is that treats work wonders, and once he associates someone with snacks and kindness, he’s much more comfortable. What sets him apart most is the combination of sweetness and spark. He looks soft and slightly bashful, but he’s actually a power-packed, affectionate, playful young dog. He is deeply loving with his people, eager to learn, and always ready for the next adventure — whether that’s a neighborhood walk, a puzzle toy challenge, or a cuddle session on the couch.   Hedgehog brings heart, humor, and a little bit of harmless mischief wherever he goes. If you’re looking for a smart, affectionate, engaging companion who will keep life interesting and fill your home with warmth, Hedgie may just be your perfect match.  February 15, 2026, 7:53 pm
