Story
This baby boy came to me three years ago via the EBSPCA after he was picked up by San Leandro animal control. He is friendly and devoted, with an energy level few can match. He plays well with dogs and he had been around children as young as 1 year. His favorite activities are going to the park and swimming. He has been crate trained and only barks when there is cause. Kirby is full grown and right around 45lbs. That's him next to my friends 200lb St Bernard. He is a very fun companion and I think he could be a good first dog, but would do best with a yard and lots of exercise. He is very sweet and it breaks my heart that we must part ways, but I know he would do better in a more stable home than I can provide. Everything you need including dishes, kennel, bed, collar, harness, leash, etc. will be provided. Adoption fee waived.

Story
Kay is a lovely girl who has been coming out of her shell and is turning into a social pup. She bonds quickly to humans and likes to stay very close. She doesn’t seem to have any issues with other dogs, and passes them calmly, as long as they don't get too close to her preferred human friend. She is friendly and loving, and will make a great addition to just about any home. Kay is currently in a foster home. If you're interested in her, please email KSwanson@cityofberkeley.info First, we'll set up a virtual meeting with their current foster family via phone, Zoom, or Facetime, to provide you with more detailed information. Then, if you feel that Kay might be a good adoption fit, shelter staff will gladly coordinate an up-close and personal meet and greet with your potential family member. Thank you for your support!

Story
If Jambalaya is your comfort food, you need to meet this dog. He is a big hunk of a guy with a heart of gold. He can be shy with new people at first, often men, but he loves treats. After sharing a few with him, you will see his wiggly self emerge. Jambalaya is a volunteer favorite who is much easier to handle than his size would suggest. He can be a little nervous passing other dogs on leash, but if you just say his name, he will whip around and look for the treat (and ignore the dog). Jamba is one of the most human-oriented and responsive dogs we’ve ever met. And he is still a young guy learning the ropes. Jambalaya could not be sweeter. He will lean into you for pets, and his favorite thing (once he is comfortable with you) is to sit between your legs with his back to you for long, soothing pets. This boy is a real love bug, and appears to be very housetrained.

Story
This is Balto, a wonderful boy who is both handsome and sensitive. He’s a bit perplexed to have found himself in a shelter and doesn’t love being in a kennel. Who does? Once outside, Balto is a breeze to walk and seems to enjoy being out. He’s also a playgroup superstar, adjusting his play style to each dog he meets. Balto loves to play, and loves to hang out with his human friends even more. He’s a medium energy dog who would love some outings like walks or hikes, but will also do just fine hanging out around the house. Though he’d probably also love a yard to run around in with his friends. He appears to be housetrained. Balto is very human-connected, and just a great all-around dog, so come see if he’s your perfect match.

Story
Shampers is a shy girl who takes a minute to trust people. She’s very curious, though, and if you take a slow and gentle approach she’ll be checking you out pretty quickly. Shampers likes to walk and will tag along behind her person, kind of pretending she’s not really there. She appears fine with other dogs, but is anxious around loud noises. In the playroom, Shampers is still shy about asking for attention, but once you start petting her, she doesn’t want you to stop. She is still pretty young, so we’re pretty sure in a quiet home where she gets lots of affection, she will blossom.

I am in a foster home and not at the shelter. If you are interested in adopting, submit an adoption questionnaire by email. Learn more hereThis Dog is Available By Appointment Only Awww, Patti Smith makes our hearts melt. This cutie was frightened when she was found wandering in Oakland but seemed to want to be near people even if she was not so sure about them. With some patience and care, Patti Smith has come out of her shell in her foster home! She is a joy to be around. Her foster family reports that Patti enjoys long naps on the most comfortable surface she can find, has great leash manners (although sometimes there's a squirrel that she just can't resist), and is fully house trained. She has been left alone for up to five hours at a time and peacefully napped the whole time. She also enjoys car rides as long as there's a place for her to curl up and nap. You'll notice a theme here - sleeping is high on Patti's list of favorite activities! One of the cutest things she does is when she's given a new bone - she grunts and struts around the house to show it off before settling down to enjoy it. And when she's feeling herself, she'll roll around on the grass for fun. She is a sweet and mellow companion once she makes friends with people. Patti Smith has shown some nervousness around people she does not know trying to pet her, and will be best in a quiet home. She's about 90 pounds and would blossom even more in a warm, loving furever home (with comfy places to nap)! Story
I am in a foster home and not at the shelter. If you are interested in adopting, submit an adoption questionnaire by email. Learn more hereMeet Sonja, the ultimate couch companion and snuggler. Though she loves lounging around the house, she also makes a great plus-one for all of your social outings. Sonja is a lively girl and is quick to tippy-tap her toes when she's excited, especially about her favorite foods like cream cheese, peanut butter or tuna. She is a great dance partner, and when it comes to dinner time or treating, she will impress you with her lady-like "sit" command. She can't resist soaking up the sun, and may even try to trick you into letting her out for a sunbathing session. Sonja is a very social and friendly dog who loves being surrounded by humans. She is well trained, housetrained, and is perfectly comfortable in a crate. She knows basic commands such as "sit," "down," and "stay." and is a polite and well-behaved house guest. She prefers to sleep on a bed with her humans, but is also content in a crate. She has met a wide variety of people of all ages and has done well with everyone. She would do best in a home with a well-fenced, sunny yard as she can get a little worked up around other animals. Ideal for Sonja to be an only pet in the home. She is well-behaved on a leash and enjoys shorter hikes, but tuckers out around 2 miles. Sonja is about 7 years old and 55 pounds. She is in a foster home, and you can reach out at sonja@jeffvier.com or see more of her (and message her) @sonjadog_oas on Instagram! Story
I am in a foster home and not at the shelter. If you are interested in adopting, submit an adoption questionnaire by email. Learn more hereGet ready to indulge in the most delectable delight of them all – Cheesecake! This sweet pup is the life of the party, and once she's off leash in the yard, she's off like a sprinter at the starting line, ready to have a blast. She craves attention and pets, making her the star of any gathering. But she also comes when called, with so much enthusiasm! Cheesecake's sweetness doesn't stop there. She's the belly rub connoisseur, rolling over for a little dose of love and affection. She takes treats with grace and is an expert at "sit" and "down." Cheesecake does have a little secret – she's sensitive about her head, so a gentle approach is key. And she has a unique little head tilt, likely a memento from a past adventure or injury, possibly. We don't know her past but we know nothing can keep this sweetheart down – she's as happy as can be, ready for all the fun life has to offer. And when it comes to building her confidence, positive reinforcement obedience training is the name of the game.  Cheesecake is all about toys and, of course, soaking up that precious human attention. She's the ultimate 3-4-year-old party animal! As for her canine companions, Cheesecake met a few at the shelter, but she's mostly looking for some one-on-one attention with her forever family. She was mostly uncomfortable meeting other dogs at the shelter and that's OK! We know the shelter can be stressful. So for now, we recommend that she be the only dog in the home. If you're ready to bring a slice of sweetness into your life and share it with Cheesecake, you're in for a treat like no other.
