Story
Renegade came to us in 2015 as a 4-6 month old pup. She was on the urgent list at the Kansas City shelter: "***Rescue Only - Pup was brought to the shelter by animal control. It appears that she has had no previous human socialization and is very defensive when staff attempts to interact with her." Most ferals you work with will shut down, and curl up, and not really think about biting the thing scaring them. Renegade was different (hence her name). She will defend herself and will try to scare strangers away before they ever get near her. She eventually bonded to us and we could handle her and pet her and she'd curl up in a ball and allow the touching without defending herself. She'd wag her tail for us, and get excited to see us but then if you reached for her she'd run to her safe spot (an open wire crate) and curl up. With time, patience, and consistency she will now just cower down for petting, not run away. She WANTS the petting. She's so happy with us, dances around wagging her tail, gives us little kisses, loves treats, but when you reach for her she'll cower down and wait for the petting. The feral dog in her. With strangers, she acts like she's a guard dog and tries to scare them away...but with treats, time, and love she'll warm up to you. Renegade loves it here, she's safe here, but if a skilled, special person was interested in her...she is available for adoption. In the wrong home Renegade would bite someone. So we will be thorough in our screening of potential homes. Because of her trust/fear issues the potential adopter would need to come to our property to meet her 2-3 times a week for 3-6 weeks in a row to build a bond with her. Socially Imperfect...but still worth it. Renegade is a happy dog, who loves life, loves to play with other dogs, and deserves to live. She's a perfect example of why we do what we do. Just because she's not a 'normal' dog doesn't mean she doesn't deserve to live. Check out this video of her playing: https://www.facebook.com/AutumnAcres/posts/3285192524848339 Renegade doesn't have a sponsor. Want to help provide toys, treats, and routine medical care for her? Become her sponsor! $50 a month is all we need to help provide for her.

Story
Cami is a fairly new member of The Pet Connection's team. She's around eight years old and is a very polite house guest as she already knows to do her business outside. She is such a sweet, shy girl who wants desperately to be loved. It's going to take her a while to trust people and she'd appreciate a quiet home where there aren't a bunch of visitors coming and going. She also prefers to be your one and only pooch, if you don't mind. She promises to love you to the moon and back, though! Call or text The Pet Connection at 913-671-7387 for more info on Cami. She's staying with us in Beloit, Kansas, but transport is available to the right home. #thepetconnection #adoptdontshop #socute #happy

Story
Abby girl has lost the only home she's ever known. Her mama went to assisted living and her dad could no longer care for her. We promised that we'd find their baby a new home. Abby was adopted as a puppy from a rescue in Oklahoma in 2016 and turned eight in March. She was so frightened and shut down when she came to stay with us at The Pet Connection. But what we've learned about Abby since she joined us a few months ago has been delightful. It started with Abby being a little bit silly with her favorite green rubber toy and now she's a master fetcher in the play yards, with full-on wiggle butts when she sees people she knows! The girl's got some moves! She can still be a little shy at first, but the way to Abby's heart is definitely through her stomach--hot dogs and chicken being the preferred treats. They help her overcome her fears of just about anything. :) What Abby really needs now, though, is to be in a home, with a person or family, to experience the routine of a regular day with people who love her again. Once you meet Abby, you just might find that you need her as much as she needs you! Please call or text The Pet Connection at 913-671-7387 for more information on Abby. She's in the KC metro, but transport is available to the right home. #thepetconnection #seniorsrule

Story
Dandy is looking for the perfect home! He is a very fun, sweet dog. He would love someone that wanted to take him places and go on hikes or be active in other ways. He is incredibly smart and would excel with some training and be great at something like agility. He is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on all vaccines and has heartworm prevention for the coming year, as well as 3 months flea and tick prevention. He is almost 4 years old and weighs about 40lbs. He is crate trained and will come with a nice large crate and all his supplies including food. He used to go everywhere with his previous owner and he does ride in the car and walk on a leash very well. His owner before me passed away and I’ve attempted to integrate him with my other dogs, but he and my much larger dogs play too hard outside and it's difficult for me to control. He would do best in a home with dogs more his size and energy level and no cats or very small children.

Story
Alinga is a 3 year Australian Cattle Dog (aka Blue Heeler) that was recently brought in as a stray. Heelers are known to be smart, and she was smart enough to find a good person who brought her to KCPP. She has been a bit shy at the shelter, but since she approached the person who brought her to us and hopped in their car without issue, she likely will blossom in a home environment. Alinga is a herding breed, who needs both physical and mental stimulation every day. She can't wait for a home of her own with room to roam, toys, and love. Are you ready for the fun and adventure a smart girl like her can add to your life? Come meet her at KCPP today!Alinga is spayed, micro-chipped, vaccinated, and ready for her forever home!Alinga is currently living in a foster home. If you would like to learn more about her or meet her, please email foster@kcpetproject.org.

Story
Boba was just a puppy when my mother brought her home. She grew up with us but was ultimately neglected with the family that was suppose to take care of her. My mother no longer cared for her once Boba grew too big, and she found out the price tag of keeping a dog. She threw the responsibility to her children, who had no means of actually taking care of a dog without support from their parents. No one else in the family wants her, and none of us are available to actually train or care for her the way she needs. Honestly, I don’t have much hope for Boba in finding a good family here. To be transparent, our financial troubles and schedule has left her untrained, lacking in social skills and lacking of medical records. All of which was through our incapability and overestimation that we’d be good owners for her. But I’m going to try. She deserves the world. I hope she can find a better home someplace else, where she can be safe and happy.
