I’m Baxter — a 7-year-old border collie/retriever mix with a big heart and an even bigger desire to belong. After spending my whole life with one family, everything changed when they moved and couldn’t take me along. I didn’t understand why at first. One day I was home… and the next, I was starting over. It’s been an adjustment, I won’t pretend otherwise. When you’ve loved the same people for seven years, the world feels a little shaky without them. But the staff here at Animal Ark have shown me so much kindness that I’m beginning to feel steady again. They scratch behind my ears, tell me I’m a good boy, and remind me that this is just the beginning of my next chapter. My old family said I was warm and affectionate with people I knew, but a little unsure around new adults. I’m trying my best — I really am — and once I trust you, I’ll be your shadow, your teammate, your loyal companion. I’ve always gotten along well with other dogs and even cats, whether they were familiar or brand-new friends. The border collie in me means I’m driven, loyal, and happiest when I have a job to do — even if that job is just playing fetch until we’re both tired and happy. I’ll curl up for cuddles once the “workday” is done, but I thrive when I have space to run and think and explore. A home with a large, fenced yard would make my tail wag nonstop. Apartments just don’t give a collie’s mind and body enough room to breathe. I can be sensitive to noise and quick to alert you when someone’s at the door or walking by — it’s my way of looking out for my family. And the retriever side of me? I love learning and will work hard on getting a treat as long as the treat is something I'm into, because I reserve the right to be picky. I'm very well potty trained and I will ask to be let out if I need to go. I need lots of activity. If I don't get enough during the day, I'll ask you to play with me. I know sit, lay down, and shake, but I'm still working on getting these every time I'm prompted. I prefer to not be in a crate because it makes me nervous. I am able to free roam at night and when my humans are away without issues. The best kind of home for me is a home that can give me the active days I need, either through lots of outside time or through lots of challenging learning. I am an adorable border collie/lab mix who wants nothing more than a home to call my own--and, preferably, a ball to call my own as well. I LOVE to chase balls, and if no balls are around, I'll make do with chasing anything you throw for me--stuffies, sticks, ropes... the options are endless. I also love going on car rides, sit politely in the back seat, and walk well on a leash. My foster mom says that I'm amazingly well adjusted given my rough history. I was 1 of 16 (!!) dogs rescued from a local home, and I haven't had the best care before now. For example, you might notice that I have a bit of a limp due to a wonky front foot. The vet says that this is likely caused by a ruptured tendon that didn't heal right. Fortunately, it doesn't slow me down at all! I also recently had 8 front teeth removed. Still, nothing can bring down my happy-go-lucky personality (except, of course, when my foster mom puts away my ball for the night). Here's a bit more from my foster mom: An ideal home for Gordy would be one that can give him lots of mental and physical stimulation. He really enjoys chewing on bones and bully sticks, playing tug with toys, and playing fetch. He's also a smart boy and has picked up on sit, lay down, and crate up very quickly. We're working on some new commands for him to show off! I think he'd do great with someone who enjoys having a dog that can be a companion to them on a variety of adventures!
