Story
Got a nagging feeling that something’s missing from your life? Something that weighs about 60lbs, maybe about a year old with shiny golden fur? Meet Cayden. He is a 1 year old Labrador Retriever/Australian Cattle Dog mix, per his DNA test. This handsome boy hasn’t always looked this way. Under that goofy, cheery, handsome pup is a pretty heartbreaking past.
Cayden was born on a rural farm to a Labrador dad and Cattle Dog mix mom. By the time he was a month old, he had battled Parvovirus, and that disease took his mom and all but one other sibling. Cayden, his brother, and his dad were nevertheless exiled to the backyard to face all kinds of weather - the highs of Texas summer and the lows during the coldest week of the year. The pups slowly developed Demodex Mange and suffered through it until another rescue was contacted about them. That rescue did not have an available foster family, so they reached out to Rescue Row for help. We quickly had someone volunteer to take them in, but by the time the other rescue drove out there to pick them up, only Cayden had survived. He was extremely lethargic when he joined us, and we almost had to take him to the ER. However, he turned a corner and fully recovered from his mange with a few months of medicated baths and lots of TLC. Unfortunately, he was not out of the woods yet. 4 months after he joined our care, Cayden’s foster mom noticed that he began limping on walks. Upon a visit to the vet, it was determined that his left elbow had mild osteoarthritis and a blunted coronoid process with a normal semilunar notch. His right elbow had moderate osteoarthritis and an abnormally shaped coronoid process with exostosis and mild incongruity. As if Cayden had not fought long and hard enough, he now faced a hereditary condition that was only made worse by his poor nutrition as a puppy. In March, he had a left bilateral elbow arthroscopy and a right ulna osteotomy. He is now ready to find his forever home!
Now to the good stuff. Cayden’s foster family says he is one of the goofiest and most intelligent dogs they have ever fostered. He has a big, loving personality, and his soulful eyes seem almost human at times. Despite all that he has been through, he has complete and total zest for life. One of his absolute favorite things to do is train - and boy, is he good at it. Cayden knows “place”, “sit”, “down”, “leave it”, and “stay”. He is kennel trained, potty trained, bell trained, and knows how to use a doggy door. Strangers? He’s never heard of them. He will greet absolutely any person or dog he comes across. He is a big fan of car rides, loves to play fetch in the backyard, enjoys strolling around the neighborhood on his daily walks, and will always be down for a snuggle sesh (he prefers to lay on you, not by you). He keeps his foster family laughing with all of the odd positions he chooses to take naps in. You must be wondering what the catch is - Cayden seems pretty perfect. The short version is that he is a 1 year old Lab/Cattle Dog mix. The long version is that he is still a puppy and still has some unwanted puppy behaviors. When he gets super excited, he will mouth and jump. He knows he’s not supposed to, but he just can’t help it! His foster fam has been working hard to hinder these behaviors, but in the meantime, we will not adopt him to a home with young kids. Oh, he’s also an in-your-face-all-the-time kinda dog. You’re sitting on the couch? Cayden is too - preferably on top of you. Got up to pee? He’ll come with. Making food? You bet he’s right at your feet. He doesn’t have separation anxiety by any means, but he definitely likes to hang out with his people. If you’re into that sorta thing, Cayden will be your best friend. He is searching for a forever home that can keep his smart brain stimulated, whether that be with continued training, an active lifestyle, or another pup to play with and keep him company. Rescue Row is a 501(c)3 (non-profit) all volunteer dog rescue organization serving the DFW Metroplex. We are dedicated to rescuing dogs in shelters, dogs in abusive or neglectful situations, and dogs surrendered by their owners because of difficult circumstances. We place dogs in loving, responsible, committed permanent homes, following a comprehensive adoption process, which includes taking considerable care in finding good matches and educating prospective adopters about the responsibilities and costs of bringing a dog into their homes and lives. Dogs in our care are spayed or neutered, microchipped, receive all appropriate veterinary care and treatment, and placed in nurturing foster homes while they await placement in their permanent homes. We assist dogs in distress without regard to age, breed or ease of placement. Dogs in the greatest need take priority. Finally, we strive to work with shelters and other rescue and humane organizations to develop a network of supporters and volunteers in order to create a better world for homeless dogs.
