Story
This lively and spirited youngster is Guy, listed as a lab/retriever mix that arrived on 4/22 at the Mesquite Animal Shelter. Guy is approx 7 months old, weighs about 25 pounds and is neutered. He has an abundance of puppy energy and behavior. He needs training to convince him that it is bad manners to jump on people! At this point it would seem he would not be a good fit for a family with very small children due to the jumping. Guy will undoubdtedly become some family's beloved and well-adjusted pet once all the puppy stuff is dealt with and worked through. He is kenneled with another pup and they get along fine. He knows the sit command and will do so for treats. In fact, he loves the Pupperoni treats we give him and may be fairly easy to train with plenty of some yummy treats on hand. You will note from his pics that his right ankle is deformed. When he arrived at the shelter, he was taken to the vet and x-rays were done. It was determined that this was possibly the result of an injury that was not cared for and didn't heal properly. It doesn't affect his ability to get around and doesn't seem to bother or slow him down. He's friendly, affectionate, gives kisses and is a-ok with being loved on...that is once he slows down! This playful and joyful pup needs out and into a loving home in which his people will invest some time and effort in helping him fit in. That will involve daily playtime, exercise, enrichment and obedience training.

Story
This adorable girl is Blondie, a Lab Retriever/Terrier mix that was brought to the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 6/8 as a stray. She weighs 47 pounds and is about 2 years old. It was so much fun to watch her run with abandon, romp and prance around the yard, free from the confines of her kennel! She has the energy of a puppy! She is playful, enthusiastic and an on-the-go kind of gal. She will jump on you in her excitement so certainly could use some manners training. Blondie walks quite nicely on a leash. When we walked past dogs that barked at her, she was intimidated. She knows how to fetch and has been taught the sit and paw commands. This is another one of those dogs that I am puzzled as to why the owner has not come looking for her! She was fine with me petting her. Blondie loves treats and takes them quite nicely. Can you help her out the shelter front door?

Story
Are you ready to play? Barkley is! He scampered and romped around the yard, and then he would come up to me trying to entice me to join in his game. Barkley is a one year-old 57 pound mostly black retriever/lab mix that arrived at the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 7/1 as a stray.. He's a happy, energetic, playful boy that would probably do well with young children. He wasn't specifically interested in toys or balls. He has his own little game. I think he wants you to chase him. He sits immediately for treats and takes them gently. He is very alert. He's friendly, affectionate and well behaved. He did his business in the yard. He was not interested in meeting other dogs, but we suggest if you have another dog that you ask the shelter for a dog test. He has a relatively strong pull on the leash and tended to get tangled. He's a real sweetheart! He told me he'd like to have a yard to romp in but would like to spend most of the time in the house with his new family. He told me to tell you that he likes to watch TV.... especially Animal Planet.

Story
This cutesy high-spirited pup is Laddie, listed as a retriever/lab mix that arrived on 7/4 at the Mesquite Animal Shelter as a stray. Laddie is a happy-go-lucky, tail-wagging youngster, with an exuberant and excitable nature! He weighs 33 pounds and is about 5 months old. This youngster needs an active family that will provide him with enrichment, training, exercise, and playtime daily. He promises that once he gets through the awkward puppy stage, he will behave himself and become an integral part of the family unit. But he begs you to be patient with him. He is athletic and likes to jump and climb. He does jump on you continually and this will be at the top of the list of things to work on when he finds his forever home. He walks nicely on a leash. He loves treats and will sit for them. Being highly motivated by treats may make it easier to train this boy. He is amiable and A-OK with receiving loving attention, that is once he slows down. Laddie is playful and loves to play with toys. He is quite firm about not wanting to live in someone's backyard.

Story
Warning! Cute puppy alert! Yes, this adorable pup is Beau, a cutesy youngster that arrived at the Mesquite Animal Shelter along with a litter of three other pups. Beau weighs 10 pounds and is 3 months of age. My Dog Scanner app suggests his breed to possibly be a Vizsla mix. Two of the pups have already been adopted, but Gus and Beau remain at the shelter. They are both very playful, enjoy wrestling and running around the room with other and playing with toys. They both love treats! Beau has an abundance of puppy energy and behavior, and there is nothing timid or shy about him! His little tail wags constantly as he romps about the room. This friendly, sweet and lovable boy would like nothing better than to be able to find his very special home. The boys do not need to be adopted or rescued together, and would probably be best to go to different homes. It is vital that Beau go to a home in which the person or family understands the challenges of investing time and energy into training, providing exercise and playtime, as well as enrichment. In this way, Bo will work through the puppy stage and become a well adjusted member of the family!

Story
This high-spirited 3 month old is Gus. He arrived as a stray along with 3 siblings at the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 7/8. Two of the pups have been adopted and he and Beau remain, possibly wondering why they haven't been adopted or rescued considering how adorable they are! Gus weighs 11 pounds. He and his brother are kenneled together in a metal crate in one of the hallways because the shelter is so overcrowded that there is not enough kennel space for all the dogs that come streaming through our doors. It was fun to watch the two of them romp, wrestle and play with one another with abandon in the room in which I did their evals. They both have lots of puppy energy and behavior. They are very playful, love toys and are on the move constantly. Gus likes treats, is friendly and sweet and likes to be petted although he is just really too busy running around and playing to slow down. Gus and Beau do not need to be adopted together. In fact, it would probably be best if they were adopted or rescued separately Gus is looking for a person or family willing to invest the time and effort into providing daily playtime, exercise, enrichment and training to work through the puppy stage stuff in order to fit nicely into the family unit.

Story
Knut came to us at 3 weeks during a winter storm old and was one of the biggest babies we had seen. That is why we named him after a famous polar bear cub. We are unsure of his breed, and as he gets bigger our guesses keep changing. We do think he has some hound in him due to his elongated snout. He is now 9 months old and weighs 60 lbs. He is neutered, microchiped, and has had 3 rounds of vaccines. We expect him to be quite a large dog fully grown, possibly over 80lbs. However, Knut is a gentle giant. He is very sweet and passive and loves to play with the other dogs. But his favorite thing to do is eat. He is a little shy at first, but warms up quickly. He is ready for his forever home and a family that wants a big dog with a big heart.

Story
Adoption fee waived for our "bear" pups. Polar Bear came to us at only a few weeks old with his 3 siblings. We know that mom is a Labrador mix. Due to the fact that the puppies have dewclaws and their size we assume they are also Pyrenees mixes. He is the smallest of his siblings and the most shy. He is cautious to try new things and will stand back and watch. He can be a bit fearful at first, but once he figures it out he is happy and playful. He loves playing wirh his siblings, but is just as happy laying on the couch. He is very sweet and loving.

Story
Hi! My name is Mina and I am three years old. I am a Retriever mix with some Great Dane attributes, big ole feet, tall, lean body and a long tail. I am a leaner and as sweet as pie. I eat, sleep and stay in my crate when my mom is not home and sometimes rest in there when I am tired. It is my safe space. Once a week, my mom takes me to visit a local daycare/boarding facility here in East Dallas to socialize and get my energies out. My two older brothers are not as high energy and playful so visiting with other dogs closer to my age and play style adds balance to our home life. I have not socialized with any feline friends or small children as of yet, but I am highly adaptable and always up for new adventures. My favorite past times include: fetching, playing chase, hunting squirrels, spending time with my humans and fellow doggies. I make friends wherever I go and love attention and companionship. I am very obedient and know a few commands:sit, lay down, come. Plus, I am a good listener and fast learner, especially if treats are involved! I also walk well on a leash and love to ride in the car. Mom and I are working to correct a few of my habits and are seeing good results with consistency. If you are looking for a lovebug, loyal, all-around best friend, look no further...I am your girl!! XOXO, Mina

Story
( Dallas Texas) Bella was found with her mama and other siblings behind a Love's gas station when she was a puppy about a year ago. Now living with her 2 sisters at her kind foster mom's home, Bella has grown into a beautiful lab-mixed young lady. Bella is a sweet, submissive, and playful pup. She is about 55 lbs, and a year old. Bella plays very well with other dogs and does need time to trust and interact with humans. Bella is well kennel and house trained, and she knows and promptly follows commands, such as sit, lay, stay, shake, high five, and touch. How amazing is that!!!! Bella would be super good in a house with another dog who is also playful. Please let us know if you would like to meet this smart and beautiful young lady. July 26, 2024, 12:03 am
