Why We Encourage Adopting Young Kittens in PairsWhen adopting a young kitten, two kittens are often easier—and healthier—than one.Kittens learn an enormous amount from interacting with other kittens. During play, they learn important social skills such as how hard is too hard to bite, when play has become too rough, how to read another animal’s signals, and how to appropriately use their energy. A human family can provide love and attention, but we simply cannot completely replace the lessons and companionship another kitten provides.Having a kitten companion also gives young kittens an appropriate outlet for their tremendous amount of energy. Instead of relying entirely on their humans for stimulation, two kittens can chase, wrestle, explore and play together—and then often curl up together when they are tired.Kittens raised alone may be more likely to direct their normal kitten behaviors toward people or household objects. This can include biting hands and feet, attacking ankles, excessive nighttime activity, destructive behavior, or demanding constant attention. Adopting two kittens doesn’t guarantee that these behaviors won’t occur, but having an appropriate feline playmate can make a significant difference.There is also an emotional benefit. Moving from a foster home or shelter into a completely unfamiliar home can be stressful for a young kitten. Going through that transition with a familiar kitten companion can provide comfort, security and confidence while they adjust to their new family.For these reasons, Animal Education and Rescue strongly encourages young kittens to be adopted in pairs, particularly when there isn’t already a young, playful and kitten-friendly cat in the home.Our goal isn’t simply to find a kitten a home.
