Name: Nikki Best Guess for Breed: Chihuahua/Doxie mix Best Guess for Age: 5 yrs as of Oct 2023 SEX: female Approximate Weight: 12 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen her with cats but she can be tested. Due to her breed, Nikki may not go to a home with kids under 12. Currently Living at: DC area foster home. Special adoption considerations: Nikki is a truly Lucky Dog. She tested positive for Heartworm disease but has already been treated! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. We are happy to talk more in depth about heartworm disease and treatment during the adoption counseling process. Also, when Nikki arrived in the shelter, she was very scared and shut down. However, she has been making great strides. We think Nikki would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure she can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to continue to build confidence. Nikki is Looking For: Nikki is very eager to have her own forever home, where she gets her own humans for sniffy walks and romps in the park and gets to meet new pup and people pals along the way! Most of all, though, she wants to know she's safe and loved and under her own roof. In exchange, she promises adoring gazes and loyal companionship for all her days.
