Story
Meet Brownie!
Brownie is a 10 year old male long-haired chihuahua weighing in around 7 pounds. Brownie is ready to find his forever home! Brownie entered rescue as his previous family didn’t have enough time to dedicate to him.
Brownie's favorite activity is going outside for walks. He becomes bouncy with excitement. In the mornings he is so excited he comes and lays on his foster mom's chest and face-to-face to wake her up for the first walk of the day. He also loves having play time with his foster mom, which might be fetch with a ball or play wrestling over toys. He likes the "hide and seek" toys that have little stuffed animals stuffed inside to get out, like little squirrels in a tree stump, which he uses to get some of his aggression or frustration out. He is very good during play time to watch out for his foster mom's fingers.
He is very food motivated and takes to training really well. In fact training is a must for this little "alpha". He's a very smart boy and also very eager to do tricks for rewards. He’s practiced sit, down, paw, stand, wait, quiet, touch, kiss, and no biting. His foster mom is 100% confident he could learn more. His foster mom wears a training pouch with treats most of the day to have ready to enforce his good behavior. He is also his foster mom's little shadow. You'll also have no problem defending your home with this little alpha to protect you from anyone who dares intrude.
Brownie's biggest issue has been overcoming his aggression. He was only neutered recently at 10 years old. So he will come with a muzzle, and we do recommend investing in a pair of bite gloves, especially for the transition. For this reason we recommend a house with no kids and an experienced Chihuahua owner. However his foster mom has been really proud of him because she has noticed significant improvement since 6 weeks post neuter surgery. He used to try to bite as his primary negative reaction, but now they are redirecting that behavior towards his toys. He has become less defensive/triggered and more cuddly, playful, and open to pets and scratches. He will growl to let you know he doesn't like something before biting. So it's important to pay attention to his body language and learn what his boundaries/triggers are, e.g., he doesn't like to be picked up, being handled with two hands, people touching his butt, getting groomed, strangers, resource and bed guarding. If his foster mom wants to groom him, have people over, or bring him to a place with a lot of people, she will put the muzzle on him.
Training and play time are a must for this little man to funnel his energy into good and steer him in the right direction. They have been very important in his improvement so far. There are still things he needs to work on and his new forever parent(s) should be committed to continue his training. Mischievousness comes out if there's not enough play time or training. He steals small things within reach he knows he shouldn't take, like trash, wrappers, and paper towel rolls.
Currently on walks his foster mom tends to keep him close to her around other dogs or children. He acts interested in other dogs but then the majority of the time he starts talking like a gremlin and getting defensive. Strangers should also not engage with him or else he will snap at them. He's been improving with consistent training!
Brownie is fully vetted and up to date on all vaccinations. He is now neutered and microchipped. He is heartworm negative and receives monthly heartworm prevention. He is leash trained and house trained.
Brownie’s adoption donation is $250.
