Story
I Am One of the Max Collection!Tabitha was born about April 1, 2013 and weighs a bit too much at about 90 lbs.  This girl is very proud of her curves and when her favorite human has been gone for a few hours she does the most delightful, bouncy, dance that we've ever seen!   She is absolutely adorable and has been very good with all of us, but terribly shy at first.  She is good with other dogs, fine in the car and on leash.  This gorgeous girl has been tossed away and will be so thankful for a new home where she will be cherished!  She was left at a shelter when her babies were two days old, guess she became an inconvenience.  She was terrified for herself and her infants when we loaded them up to come here just a couple of days later.  She was a very good Mom, surmounted the stress and kept taking care of her babies who grew to be strong and healthy and now she is looking for a new home that will love her unconditionally!  It is obvious that Tabitha has not always been treated well by humans and she is terrified of being touched by new humans and she is terrified of new places.  She will take much time and effort to adjust to a new life, but she is a really wonderful, loving, girl once comfortable.  Due to her fears she truly must have a fenced in yard. Tabitha is too interested in cats to live with any. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. Story
In Memory of Papa Ouderkirk   'I have always had a huge heart for all animals, but especially cats. We even adopted two cats from Joyful Rescues: Leia and Lucy. Lucy is actually one of the cats that came from a transport, and when I saw how small and weak, she was, as well how she always scarfed down every meal as if it would be her last, I felt terrible for her.  I would like to name this transport “The Papa Ouderkirk Memorial Transport” in memory of my grandfather, who passed away in 2019 due to lung cancer he was a lover of cats as well'. - Christianna Reynolds  Freebie was born around August 04, 2019 and weighs about 20 pounds.  It seems Freebie came from a puppy mill or backyard breeding situation.  She ADORES other dogs and is happy and playful with them.   Freebie wants to love us humans and will walk up to us but runs in fear when we try to touch her.   Freebie has never been aggressive to human touch just extremely fearful.  Freebie must have a secure fenced in yard and another playful well socialized dog in her next home.  It is going to take some work and patience to show Freebie that humans are wonderful but the outcome will be well worth it for you and for Freebie .  Please do some reading on working with mill dogs before applying to adopt Freebie.  Update:  Still no human has touched this girl, but she will come within a few feet of the human she sees the most.  When she gets near I smile, wave, and say her name and she wags her tail, but will run immediately if I move toward her.  I'll keep working on it.  She does use the dog door freely and does come into the TV room with the other dogs and two humans in the evening, but she looks around, plays with another dog and then she is off doing more dog things.  Freebie does shed. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $450.00 Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. Story
I'm one of the Lily Transport! In 2014 Joyful Rescues returned from Tennessee with a little dog they called Fuzzy.  One look at her photo and we knew she was 'the one'.  Every day with this happy pup, now named Lily, reminds us of the tremendous gift Joyful Rescues gave us by saving her life.  So we dedicate this transport to Lily so that she, along with us, can 'pay it forward' giving more beautiful animals a chance at a happy life.  Sincerely The Artful Gardener (727 Mt. Hope Ave., Rochester, NY)   Chloe was born about June 18, 2014 and weighs about 85 lbs. Chloe is a Joyful Rescues sanctuary dog as she was adopted out twice and returned leaving us to realize she wasn't going to make it in the real world and she is perfectly happy right here.  Chloe has made it very clear that she has found her forever home. Chloe is a one man girl and will not be sharing her heart with any other male, only her foster dad at JR.  Chloe is what some may call “un-adoptable .” Joyful Rescues remains committed to our Sanctuary Dogs and Cats. They will stay with us for their natural lives and we will care for and love them. We will be their forever family. We wish we could do it alone but we need your help. We are looking for people who can help us with Chloe’s care. Please click the link below and donate. Chloe thanks you. https://www.paypal.com/donate   Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. Story
Thank You Barker Family!Pepper was born about May 15, 2015 and weighs about 50 lbs.  She is a Joyful Rescues sanctuary pet because she arrived from the southern high kill shelter extremely fearful of humans, but she is wonderful with all the other dogs here.  Pepper never found a home because she has a very fast bite response to any human that moves too fast around her or in any situation where she feels uncertain what the human may do - even to reach out and pet her.  Every one here understands this and new humans in the house are told ahead of entering not to reach out to Pepper.  With this understanding of her behavior she has been living here and will continue to live here happily.  She enjoys the activity and the acreage playing with the other dogs and is welcome to stay as long as she lives.   Joyful Rescues has no funding except for our adoption fees and miscellaneous donations. Story
Thank You DelleBovi Family! Flynn was born about October 4, 2014 and weighs about 22 lbs.  He is as cute as they come and was released from his puppy making days in a puppy mill in West Virginia.  The 'millers' made a call to the humane society and said they no longer needed the services of 29 dogs and would they take them.  The shelter is a kill shelter due to space and could not handle so many dogs and so they asked if we would take them.  How could we not!  So, we squeezed and adjusted and were able to take them all.  Sadly, Flynn has failed two adoptions as after a decent length of time they still could not touch him nor would he stay in the same room as them.  He is wonderful with the other dogs here and is now considered a Joyful Rescues Sanctuary pet.  He can seldom be touched and if he is it is not for long and when we must 'catch' him to be groomed we must use a towel to protect our hands because he will bite.  He does happily live inside the house with the humans who live and work here as long as they are not forcing themselves on him, which we do not unless absolutely necessary such as hair trimming.  It is felt Flynn is living his best life right where he is and is a very happy boy.  From Dr. Rasnake: There is mild pegmentary keratitis which is likely from hair rubbing on the surface of the eye.  This condition may be the result of improper hygiene/grooming.  His future family will need to be diligent to keep hair cut short around his eyes so this does not worsen.  He still can see, but there is some cloudiness.  Joyful Rescues has no funding except for our adoption fees and miscellaneous donations. Pet care and vet bills are expensive - you must be ready to take on this financial (as well as emotional) responsibility.   Can't Adopt Me?  SPONSOR ME Look for the Link 'Special Instructions to Seller' if you want to note a particular pet Before you seek to adopt a pet from Joyful Rescues, please read our Pet Adoption page http://www.joyfulrescues.org/pet_adoption.html. Story
Happy Birthday Gary Groot! My siblings and I decided to sponsor this life saving transport to honor our father's 81st birthday.  Our father, Gary Groot, is the main reason we are all animal lovers.  We grew up watching and learning how to properly pamper our puppies and he instilled in us the importance of adoption; how it saves lives.  My father just lost his beloved Precious who he loved with all his heart and took her everywhere, even bought a travel trailer so she could join him on mission projects for the church.  Precious was by his side for the last 15 years and will now wait for him at the Rainbow Bridge.  Suzanne, Karen & Tom Peach and her 5 siblings were born around January 7, 2020 and may top out in the 60-65 pound range. Please understand we are truly guessing on the breed for this family.  Some of the siblings have a more Retriever look while others we feel have more of a Collie appearance to them.  They are wonderful with the other dogs and adore us, humans once they get to know us but they are very shy at first.  It is likely they did not have much human interaction while growing up and so we anticipate they will regress when they leave us and it will take some work and understanding to make this "peach" of a dog love you, but it will be worth it in the long run!   They are sweet natured, intelligent, teens.  Peach does enjoy wading deep into the pond, but hasn't actually swam yet. This is all we know so far and we will be learning as we go and so will you.   Two month update from the mom of a litter mate:  Hi Everyone,     I thought I would include all of you in this Rosie update as not only do I want to give a "progress report" but I also had Rosie's DNA run and have some very interesting results to share. Other than her persistent fear of humans, Rosie is such a sweetheart and is a very happy girl! She loves the yard (and the pond!) and goes outside with me, Cooper or all alone where she is adorable as she entertains herself. She cuddles with me and loves the cats who chase her to play.  She knows "kiss", "sit" and sometimes "high 5". She has only had 1 accident in the last month. She waits at the door when she needs to go out and walks well on the leash if I take her on that. She has pretty much had the run of the house since she came.     She is still terrified of other people.  She will come within 3 feet of Gary (husband) now, and is not giving a grumble nearly as often as before.  She really has no aggression.  I am the only one who can put her collar or leash on as she runs and hides, shaking like crazy.  My mom, who is 87, fell and fractured a vertebrae about a month ago and 3 of us took turns staying with her 24/7.  It was challenging because I had to have Gary come spot me while I drove home to let her out, etc.  At least now he can open the door and go out and she will follow behind especially if Cooper goes too.  If she wants to come in, he has to open the door and stand a number of feet away before she will come in.  She hides when anyone comes over and is in the house.  Outside, she will hang around but stays really far from anyone who might be out there. I feel terrible because she is truly terrified.  On the other hand, she trusts me implicitly. We are literally praying that she will come to understand that she will be okay.    Now - drum roll please - her DNA results:  30% Beagle 29% Great Pyrenees!!!! 22% Treeing Walker Coonhound 12% Shapendoes (herding dog) 4% Basset hound 3% Plott hound   The Adoption Fee for this dog is $300.00 Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability.
