Story
TURK, an energetic 3-year-old shepherd mix, has been an outdoor dog most of his life. He’s wary of people but not at all aggressive. He just barks and backs away when you enter his pen to feed him or give him fresh water. He could be a good choice for someone who is just looking for a watch dog to alert them to approaching people. But we also think he could learn to trust people if someone spends time working with him.     Turk is healthy, up to date on vaccinations and neutered and gets along with other dogs. We’re waiving our adoption fee in hopes of finding him a home. If you’re interested, please email us for an application.  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.October 25, 2024, 3:29 pm

Story
Meet Taffy, a dog who is the very definition of sweet! At about two years old and a trim 29 lbs., this knee-high, brindle-coated cutie blends the smarts of an Australian Shepherd mixed with a dash of spaniel and/or boxer charm. Taffy’s greatest joy is being with people. Whether she’s curled up next to you on the couch, padding after you from room to room, or trotting happily beside you on leash, she radiates adoration. Her gentle, easy-going nature extends to other dogs, too—she greets new furry friends with a constantly wagging tail. Energy-wise, Taffy is up for kid-powered adventures, but mellow enough to be a calm companion for retirees. She’s house-trained, healthy, up to date on vaccinations, spayed and ready to start life with her forever family. If you’re searching for a loving, adaptable sidekick who will brighten every day, Taffy could be “the one.” Adoption fee: $350 which includes a collar, harness and 6 months of heartworm prevention. Story
ADOPTION FEE WAIVED! ALSO AVAILABLE TO FOSTER. No doubt you’ve seen those stories about dogs waiting 200, 300 or even 500 days before being adopted. Gilley (short for Gillian) has been at Save the Strays for more than 1,825 days – an incredibly long time to wait for that special someone to come and take her home. Why is she still here?   At 7 years young, Gilley still has a lot of stamina. She’s just crazy for toys and can destroy most of them within 5 minutes. But she has slowed down a bit over the past year and is quite happy to just hang out, get a belly rub and take a nap. She’s really quite sweet and very loyal.    Because Gilley has been here so long, she may need a little time to adjust to a new home and owner. She’s lived in a rural environment with few visitors, so she should be introduced to new sights, sounds and people in small doses. Gilley’s also initially a little uncertain around other dogs, especially if they’re also nervous or too forward. She might do best in a quieter home where she’s the only dog or in a home with only one other laid-back dog of similar size because she will play with other dogs once she’s comfortable with them.     At Save the Strays, we consider the first two weeks (longer, if needed) following adoption to be a trial period and will take Gilley back if the adoption doesn’t work out. We are also waiving Gilley’s adoption fee because we really, really, really want to see her get the home she deserves.    Not quite ready to give a dog a forever home? Gilley is also available to foster if you live within 75 miles of our location. If you have questions or want to apply to adopt or foster Gilley, email us at info@savethestrays.org.        Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.October 25, 2024, 3:29 pm

Story
Meet Sammi, a 2-year-old whippet/mountain cur mix who is waiting for someone to love with all her heart and soul. She thrives on human company and does well with both adults and kids, as well as other dogs. She just wants to be part of the action, whether that’s a car ride, a walk or just hanging out on the couch and snuggling. Sammi genuinely enjoys attention and being close to her humans and will thrive in a home where she’s included in daily activities and given lots of affection (which will be returned in equal measure!). Medium-sized at about 30 pounds, Sammi is energetic and playful but settles in nicely after she gets some exercise. She’s in good health, spayed, and up to date on vaccines. She’s doing pretty well at leash walking and getting the hang of house training. It won’t take much to complete her training. If you’re looking for a loyal, loving companion, Sammi could be the one. To apply for her, email us for an application. (Please don’t use our online application; it needs revision and sometimes doesn’t get delivered to us). Adoption fee $300, which includes a collar, harness and 6-month supply of heartworm prevention.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.June 9, 2025, 4:47 pm

Story
Stitch is a loving playful and beautiful almost 5 month (DOB 12/29/24) Labrador Retriever mix. She loves to be outside exploring and Already using her tracker (nose😊) Her mom is a 3 year old AKC Yellow (Red Fox) Labrador Retriever around 60lbs. Unfortunately we do not know any information on the father. She is up to date on her shots and deworming. She is not house trained at this time. We are looking for a home that will house her indoors but have access to explore outside. We think she potentially could be a great hunting companion. We will provide more information and pictures upon serious inquiries.
