Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Bruce is a cheerful dog who thrives on love and attention. He delights in being pet and cherishes his stuffed toys. Preferring the proximity of his foster family, he happily follows them around the house, providing quiet companionship. A crate is uncomfortable for Bruce but when left alone he has run of the house and does very well just lounging around on his comfy dog bed. Bruce thrives in the company of other dogs, finding joy in social interactions, though he doesn't always like to share with his canine companions.   Check out this   video of Bruce at the lake. Bruce is very loving and gentle with the adults and kids in his family but is very cautious with friends and visitors that come to the house. With slow introductions and positive reinforcement over time he has allowed others into his circle.  Before entering rescue, Bruce was a neglected and debilitated dog, grappling with various health issues such as Lyme disease, a thyroid disorder, skin allergies, infections, and a sinus condition with a chronic unexplained cough. Through dedicated treatment and care, he has shown positive responses, but managing his well-being requires medications on both a daily and as-needed basis. Additionally, Bruce faces mobility challenges due to hip issues in both legs and a torn ACL in his right hind leg. While corrective FHO surgery is not currently an option due to his size and how difficult his recovery would be, his quality of life is good but depends on limited yet regular physical activity, close monitoring, joint supplements, and prescribed pain management. Despite his physical limitations, Bruce adeptly uses a ramp for entering and exiting vehicles, finding joy in car ride adventures and short outings outdoors. He is a happy dog with a tail that is always wagging! Bruce is best suited to an environment with limited or no stairs due to his mobility challenges. Hard surface flooring is a challenge for him. Bruce is currently taking the following medications: carprofen, apoquel and levothyroxine. Ready to fall in love? Come and meet Bruce today! Bruce is from one of our northern reservation partners. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Meet Peech! She's a gentle soul, still finding her confidence in this big world. She delights in spending time in the yard, reveling in the simple joys of rolling in the grass and chewing on a bone. Peech is very proud, that with a schedule, she hasn't had an accident in a long time! Peech finds solace in her kennel, although she may vocalize her discomfort briefly when closed in and left, but only for a short while. Food and treats are her main motivators, and she's eager to please. Loud noises and sudden movements can startle her, but she's gradually learning to navigate her environment. While she may seem reserved, she secretly craves love and attention. Treats and getting down to her level can coax out some affection, although it will take time and patience for her to fully trust you. She enjoys walks if the other dog in the home is with. Peech hasn't encountered young children yet, and she remains cautious around adults. However, she's more likely to approach when they're seated or at her eye level. Peech trusts women faster than men. It will take a lot more time and patience from a man to earn Peech's trust. With patience, love, and time, an adopter can help her blossom into a more confident and playful companion. Peech does need to be adopted to a home with another large confident dog. Peech is from an owner surrender. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Hey there, I'm Diego! I'm thrilled to meet new folks and can't wait to meet you. My foster mom describes me as a big, friendly sweetheart, and people often compliment me on my looks. Mornings are my favorite, especially sitting on the deck with my foster mom, savoring the sounds of birds while she enjoys her coffee. I'm pretty skilled at going into my crate, although I'll express my discontent if I'm left out of the action when there's a lot of noise. I just want to join the fun! I do very well out of my crate at night and when my foster mom is at work, I stay busy snacking on my kong or napping. I'm well-versed in basic commands, sitting eagerly for treats and gently taking them. Toys are my passion! Whether it's stuffed, squeaky, or chewable, count me in. I'm even getting the hang of fetch. Leash training is a work in progress, but I'm improving. Walks help me burn energy, preparing me for cozy evenings on the couch with my humans. I'd happily be a lap dog when tired, settling for just being close to my people. If you want a handsome, clever companion who brings joy, I'm your match! Diego enjoys meeting new friends but may gently jump up, although a baby gate helps manage this. He interacted well with his Foster’s 8-year-old stepson and is gradually meeting the resident dog. Diego adores toys but needs supervision, as he may attempt to ingest stuffing. He's generally not destructive with toys and loves tug-of-war and squeakers. His adorable head tilt and smiling demeanor melt hearts. He's becoming more at ease, his wagging tail a testament to his comfort. Diego usually is ready for outdoor time and breakfast via a puzzle feeder around 7am. He's skilled at solving puzzles. He loves spending time with me on the deck. He gets breaks for leash training and spends evenings hanging out with me, relishing meeting new people. He's particularly fond of my stepson and often ends the day dozing on the couch. When relaxed, Diego crosses his front legs and showcases his endearing head tilt when listening. This handsome boy has a history of seizures and currently is taking daily medication. He is well controlled and we have not seen any seizures since entering rescue. Diego is from a local impound. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Thank you so much for your interest in Holly! She is a young sweet gal who is ready for a second chance after finding herself in a scary shelter. She did not do well with the noise and commotion of constant strangers walking by her kennel, so she came to Ruff Start where she is thriving! She does well in a car, is crate trained, knows sit and lay down (we are working on more), walks on a leash nicely (most of the time) and she loves to play fetch and tug of war. Her favorite thing in the world is playing. And if you are busy she is good about entertaining herself with a toy or ball. She loves to watch/chase birds and squirrels, so we believe small critters are a no go for Holly. She has met a cat through a glass door and seems interested in playing, but I would assume that cats are also not a good idea for this little lady.   Very intelligent, she will pick up on things quickly and is working hard to learn more each day. She loves puzzles, tennis balls, and snuggling in your lap while getting ear scratches. She has some of the softest ears!!!! She is working on not jumping up to greet people but is otherwise a typical young, friendly dog that is ready for fun and adventures. If you are looking for a super sweet dog that is up for anything, she may be the perfect one for you! Did we mention absolutely gorgeous? Holly is from a local shelter. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Minneopa is all things cute and puppy! She is very sweet and gentle, currently displaying a calmer and more serious demeanor than some puppies I've met. She enjoys following people around and taking lots of snuggly naps. She is just starting to get curious about our cat, mostly barking and running away when they meet. As she gets more comfortable, she is playing more, with a bit of puppy nibbling here and there. She loves to leap from the couch to the floor to initiate play! She does well with our overly enthusiastic dog of a similar size, and she does well in her crate. While we're still working on potty training, she is doing great when we are consistent with her. Minneopa is from a local reservation. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. We are Baby’s foster parents and we are just getting to know him but this is what we know so far. Baby is a handsome young boy with a big heart! He loves his humans so much. He snuggles up for loves any chance he gets. He would rather hang with his family than do anything else. He is very chill around the house. He has met the neighbors and was quite the charmer. He met the neighbor dogs through the fence and I have to say he was a gentleman. Mostly he wanted to meet their mom. We haven’t found toys or games he likes and I bet he’d love a fenced in yard to run around in or have a friend to run or walk with daily. He is very smart and aims to please. He does like to jump up to say hello and we are working on that. Baby would make someone a great life companion.  Baby is from a local reservation.
