Story
Introducing Blue! Affectionate Outgoing Sweet Easy Going  This regal and loving Great Dane’s age only adds to the richness of her character. Blue does not have any health issues and is currently enjoying love from her foster family. Blue's behavior is nothing short of excellent, making her a perfect companion for adults, children, cats, and other large dogs. She radiates warmth and excitement when meeting new people, often running up to lean on them during introductions—her way of saying, "Let's be friends!" Blue’s manners are impeccable and she is crate-trained and housebroken. While she exudes wonderful behavior, she can be a bit of an opportunist if tantalizing items are left within her reach. However, her understanding of commands like "come" and "leave it" showcases her intelligence and willingness to follow instructions. Blue has excellent leash etiquette during walks. Although she may pull slightly in the first block due to sheer excitement, her overall behavior on a leash is a joy to experience. Blue’s forever home does not require physical fencing. She is content with the love and boundaries provided by her family. This wise and gentle giant has a heart full of love for snuggling, napping, short walks, and simply being around her family. Her dislikes are few, but reactive dogs are on that list. Blue appreciates a calm and harmonious environment where she can share her love without any unnecessary disturbances. Blue is eagerly waiting to become a cherished part of your family! If you're ready to open your heart to a loving senior companion, Blue is ready to add an extra layer of joy to your life. Please contact us by following one of the steps below. 1. If you have already completed the application process and are an approved adopter with UMGDR, please contact Blue’s Placement Coordinator at courtney@thegreatdanerescue.com to learn more about her. 2. Story
Introducing Thor!  Playful Loving Snuggly Intelligent This gentle giant longs for all the love, snuggles, and playtime that life has to offer. As of December 2023, his estimated age is 12 to 18 months with a weight of 112 pounds. He is currently working on gaining an additional 20 pounds per vet recommendation. In his foster home, Thor has become an integral part of the family, living harmoniously with two children aged 9 and older. His interactions with kids have been nothing short of delightful, and he's even taken a liking to playful games like tug of war, often initiating the fun with his beloved toys. Thor's expressive eyes reveal his soft soul and eagerness to be surrounded by the warmth of human companionship. He's made great improvements in being left alone, but has not been left home alone uncrated. He finds solace in his crate with his toys during the night and when his foster family is not home. Thor is housebroken and has a routine that includes a preferred spot for daily bathroom breaks. A physical fence is not a requirement for his forever home, but is recommended due to his playful nature and young age. Thor's interactions with other animals have revealed a dominant yet playful side. He enjoys engaging with other dogs and has shown gentle interactions with the two small dogs in his foster home. He has wanted to play with the cat in his foster home but has redirected very well when needed. Thor hasn’t shown a prey drive and resource guarding is not a concern. Thor's playful energy occasionally translates into jumping, especially when he's excited or eager for a snuggle. A reminder helps channel this energy into a more controlled interaction. He tends to develop a strong bond with his primary caregiver, which results in some jealousy if the caregiver is giving attention to others, but he has never shown aggression, just a strong desire for attention from them. His favorite pastimes include leaning in for scratches, snuggling on the couch, and, if given the chance, sneaking onto the bed for a cozy nap. Despite his puppy energy, he calms down after a few minutes of play, showcasing a gentle and balanced temperament. This intelligent canine has learned commands like kennel, sit, leave it, out, come, and heal. Although he may still be working on curbing some puppy behaviors like jumping and leash pulling, Thor's eagerness to learn, coupled with his food motivation, makes him a quick study. Thor's health is excellent, with no reported issues from the vet. Structure and consistency are key to Thor's well-being. Thor's adoptive family must be firm and consistent, providing the guidance and love he craves. He thrives on positive reinforcement. With Thor, every day is an adventure, and he's ready to share his love and excitement with a family that appreciates his gentle spirit. Are you ready to welcome Thor into your home and heart? If so, please follow one of the two options below. If you have already completed the application process and are an approved adopter with UMGDR, please contact Thor’s Placement Coordinator at michelle@thegreatdanerescue.com to learn more about him. If you are not yet an approved adopter through UMGDR, you must complete our application process before you can be considered to adopt a dog through our rescue. Story
Introducing Chevy! Super Sweet Attention Lover Chill Friendly Personality: This well-behaved boy exudes charm and gentleness. He may be a bit unsure of new people and dogs initially, but with proper introductions, he warms up and showcases his affectionate nature. Family Dynamics: Chevy does not currently live with children, but he has been observed interacting positively with children aged 9 and up. His initial shyness may require slow introductions to any pets in his forever home, particularly with cats. Chevy gets along best with laid-back dogs, preferring a calm and relaxed atmosphere. Training: Chevy is a smart and responsive companion with a strong understanding of commands like sit, down, shake, off, and leave it. While occasionally testing your willingness to follow through on commands, his well-behaved nature shines through. Home Preferences: Although Chevy is housebroken and has done well with unattended free roam, he would prefer a family that is home more often than not. While a physical fence is not a requirement, he should not be trusted off-leash, as he enjoys a game of "catch me if you can." Medical/Health: Chevy's foster family noted that he is in great health and handles vet appointments, baths, nail trimming, and ear cleaning very well. Likes & Dislikes: Chevy delights in going on walks and car rides, savoring yummy treats, and having comfy places to rest. These simple pleasures make him a happy and content companion. Chevy does not care for busy environments which can be a source of discomfort for him. He prefers a quieter setting to truly thrive. This charming and well-mannered dog is ready to bring joy and love to his forever family. If you're ready to welcome this handsome boy into your home, please reach out to us by following one of the two steps below. 1. Story
Introducing Barney, now called Jax! Affectionate Loving Adventurous Snuggly Jax is a magnificent Great Dane who is filled with joy, love, warmth, and a touch of adventure. He is an enthusiast when it comes to walks. He tends to need a bit of coaching to refine his walking due to him being so excited to take his human on a journey! His preference is to spend time with others, and while he's made great strides in being left alone, his true joy is in the company of his loved ones. He does not have previous experience with cats but has done well with other dogs, including small ones. He has had positive experiences with children aged 7 and older, showcasing his gentle and loving nature. Jax will offer a big bark to people entering his home but can be easily redirected. A physical fence is recommended, but not required for his adoptive home. Jax is a connoisseur of affection and can often be found snuggling his humans and stuffed animals. He also enjoys car rides and baths. His love knows no bounds, as he showers those around him with kisses and finds solace in peaceful slumber. Loud noises and getting his nails trimmed are two dislikes of his. In August of 2023, Jax started taking medication for low thyroid. He has since been taken off of this medication per his vet’s recommendation to see if his endocrine system is back to normal. Jax is a companion who will always brighten your day. If you're ready to embrace the love of this special Great Dane, please contact us by following one of the steps below. 1. Story
Introducing Jack! Silly Loving Playful Sweet  Personality: Jack is a loving companion who thrives in a structured daily routine. His affectionate nature makes him an ideal partner for someone looking for a devoted friend. He takes great joy in pleasing his people. However, he can be insecure at times, requiring a patient and understanding owner who can provide reassurance and comfort. Home & Family Musts: Jack needs a strong and confident owner who can provide leadership and advocate for him. He responds well to guidance and seeks a trustworthy person to lead him through life's adventures. Jack prefers a relaxed home environment, making an adoptive home with older or no children the best fit for him. His forever home will require a physical fence to keep him safe as he explores and plays due to him being deaf. Compatibility with Animals: Jack's reaction to cats is unknown, so a careful introduction and observation period will be necessary to ensure a harmonious relationship. He would be happiest as the only dog in the household, allowing him to bask in the undivided attention of his forever family. Likes & Dislikes: Jack loves playing with toys and spending quality time with his human friends. His ideal day includes play sessions, followed by relaxing on a comfy bed. Jack is not a fan of new situations and interacting with new dogs. Understanding and patience are key when introducing him to unfamiliar environments. Special Note: Jack is deaf, adding a unique aspect to his personality. Despite this, he is a remarkable loving companion who relies on his other senses to navigate the world. This loyal and loving friend is waiting for the right person to share his heart with. If you're ready to provide him with a structured routine, gentle guidance, and a home filled with love, Jack is eager to become your devoted companion. Story
Introducing Leonard! Patient Snuggly Affectionate Loves People Personality: Leonard is the epitome of snuggly and sweet. He thrives on attention and is dedicated to pleasing his people. While he excels in known environments with his calm and patient demeanor, he seeks a leader who can guide him through new situations when nerves arise. Social Skills: Leonard has a magical ability to win over the hearts of non-dog people and effortlessly bonds with children of all ages. His snuggly nature and gentle spirit make him a cherished companion in any family setting. Other Pets: While Leonard enjoys the company of people, he can be nervous around other dogs and requires slow introductions. He has very limited experience with cats, so slow introductions will also be necessary with them. Training: Leonard is a well-behaved gentleman who is housebroken, kennels nicely, and has mastered essential commands such as sit, stay, and okay (release word). His leash manners have greatly improved, and he only pulls occasionally. A physical fence is highly recommended to ensure his safety and well-being. Favorites and Dislikes: Leonard loves simple pleasures, including drinking water with ice cubes, snuggling, going for car rides and walks, and taking blissful naps with fuzzy blankets. He dislikes playing fetch and prefers his water on the cooler side. Medical/Health: Due to a sensitive stomach, Leonard thrives on a diet of whitefish or bison/beef dry food. He received a clean bill of health at his most recent vet visit. Leonard is eagerly waiting to find his forever home! If you think you may be the adoptive home he is waiting for, please complete one of the following two steps. 1.
