Story
Coconut - 10 years, Maltese, Spayed This senior angel dog is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org Our Team Says: Coconut was rescued from a backyard breeding situation with 7 other dogs. All of them being seniors, having lived a life of neglect. We've gotten them back on track :)  Their Foster Parent Says: "Coconut is the sweetest, cuddliest little love bug. She's very eager to please and loves to be either next to or on a person. She's also great just napping on the couch. She's clever and will be a great addition to any family. She doesn't love the subway yet but she's very brave and doesn't cry on it. She's a great apartment dog and is loving her backyard too. She doesn't love coats or sweaters but she's getting used to the cold weather. Truly a delightful dog." Level of dog ownership experience needed:FLEXIBLE: We predict this dog will be low on the challenge scale with regard to exercise and mental stimulation requirements, but seniors tend to need a lot of help and understanding when it comes to lifestyle and veterinary issues. Seniors usually need quiet, calm environments and routines and do not do well with a lot of bustle, change, and rambunctious movement (kids and young playful dogs, for instance). This dog’s adopter will need to be prepared for senior health challenges, which usually come with expensive veterinary bills and time in vet offices. Senior care can also take an emotional toll on their humans. Adopting a mature pup is a wonderful thing to do, but it can also be difficult.  ENERGY LEVELLower – Pretty chill indoors and won’t demand endless amounts of stimulation and exercise but still needs a few walks a day (10-30 min each) for potty breaks and to stretch their legsTOLERANCE TO CITYAdjusting to the city – Spooked easily by loud noises and bustling areas but walks pretty well in quiet areas and probably just needs more time to adjust (may be a puppy or a brand new rescue). Would prefer a home in a calmer part of the city or the suburbs.POTTY TRAININGYes — Uses pads and goes outside COMFORT LEVEL WITH STRANGERSSocial butterfly – Wants to be friends with everyone who walks by, loves anyone who will stop to say hello. BEHAVIOR WITH CHILDREN (always requires adult supervision)Yes for most ages – very confident, gentle, low energy, tolerant, not mouthy . She's bit mouthy but only with kisses.SOCIAL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER DOGSYes – Good with most other dogs (sizes, breeds, etc.) as far as we know and enjoys socializing with other caninesRESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER ANIMALS (cats, small pets, etc.) - N/AOkay to go to a home with a catMOUTHY BEHAVIORPast this stage– Little to no interest in chewing on stuff or putting things in their mouth that aren’t food. Doesn’t try to chew on hands, feet, etc. during playtimeSEPARATION ANXIETY (Please leave your foster dog home alone every day for at least 20 minutes.) Past this stage – Completely fine being left home alone. Doesn’t cry or exhibit destructive behavior when you leave the apartment or house. LEASH MANNERSGetting the hang of it – Probably hasn’t been on a leash much in their life but figuring it out. Might be a mild puller but responds to correction. CUDDLE BUG LEVELMedium – Likes to snuggle when he's in the mood but often stays in his own bed High – Wants to be in your lap pretty much all the time In between medium and highJUMPING ON PEOPLE TO SAY HELLOListens to correction – Only jumps on people they know when really excited, stops with correction.CRATE TRAININGNot at all – Don’t even have one, I’ve puppy proofed and we free range.  Medical statusHealthy for their age as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm tested if coming from Tennessee or Puerto Rico; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake. Adopters will need to be ready for senior care – at a minimum, that will be annual checkups including senior bloodwork. Coconut has had bloodwork done and a full dental as her teeth where in pretty bad shape upon being rescued. She now has no teeth remaining - her last few had to be pulled but she's doing great, doesn't mind at all :)  How this dog ended up with Social Tees:Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Los Angeles and Puerto Rico. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.  PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!  This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes. Story
Marshmallow - 8 years, 10lbs, Maltese, Neutered This senior angel dog is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org Our Team Says: Marshmallow was rescued from a backyard breeding situation with 7 other dogs. All of them being seniors, having lived a life of neglect. We've gotten them back on track :)  Their Foster Parent Says: "Living with Marshmallow has been a genuinely easy and comforting experience. He brings a calm, steady presence into the home and settles naturally into daily routines. Indoors, he’s relaxed and low-maintenance, happy to nap, lounge nearby, or quietly keep you company without demanding attention. Outdoors is where he really lights up. Walks are his absolute favorite, and he moves with confidence and curiosity, often at a brisk pace and occasionally breaking into a little jog when he’s excited. He shows some interest in other dogs but is non reactive for most part. It’s joyful to watch, never overwhelming. Marshmallow is the kind of dog who doesn’t ask for constant interaction but clearly wants to be close to his people. He’ll follow us from room to room, always choosing a spot where he can keep an eye on things, then settle contentedly. He’s not interested in playing with toys, but he has his own endearing routines. One of the sweetest is how he carefully gathers his favorite items and arranges them in his chosen spot on the sofa, like a little nest. Because he may remain low energy in the household, he needs his walks for stimulation, if not, he will scout, collect, and play with things from the house and bathroom. Overall, Marshmallow thrives on quiet companionship and structure. He would be a wonderful match for someone looking for a gentle, well-mannered dog who enjoys walks, values routine, and simply wants to be part of your everyday life- close to the people he trusts. He is SO SO cute, adorable, lovable, gentle, and ALL the best things in the world. He may be shy at first, but give him a week, and you'll get to see his true personality and his love for his humans." Level of dog ownership experience needed:BEGINNER: This means we predict this dog will be low on the challenge scale due to its breed/age combo. Potentially a good fit for someone who has relevant dog care experience (fostering, dog sitting) and is looking to adopt their first pup.  Energy levelLOWER: Pretty chill indoors and won’t demand endless amounts of stimulation and exercise. But still needs a solid adventure walk (30 to 60 minutes) in addition to potty breaks.  He enjoys 3 walks a day, with one of the walks ranging around 60min. He shows low energy in the household but thrived during his walk. TOLERANCE TO CITYAdjusting to the city – Marshmallow can be shy and cautious at first until he settles into his environment. Following a week, he is currently thriving in the suburban area. POTTY TRAINING He uses the wee pad in the household, but also has success going potty outdoors. COMFORT LEVEL WITH STRANGERSIn between bean – Fine with meeting new people but not particularly interested, kind of shy in busy social situations like a gathering or a packed day in the park. BEHAVIOR WITH CHILDREN (always requires adult supervision)Yes for most ages – very confident, gentle, low energy, tolerant, not mouthy. He had some interactions with children during his walk. He appeared interested and gentle, lifting his paws to show his interest towards them. SOCIAL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER DOGSMostly – Generally good with other dogs but may be selective. Often he will hide behind you in the presence of big dogs, but he also had moments when he showed interest in Golden Retrievers and other calmer dogs. He is not reactive to other dogs. RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER ANIMALS (cats, small pets, etc.)Would be okay to live with a cat  MOUTHY BEHAVIORPast this stage– Little to no interest in chewing on stuff. He is very gentle and respectful towards people's hands and fingers. However, when bored, he likes to scout the bathroom and play with toilet papers. SEPARATION ANXIETY (Please leave your foster dog home alone every day for at least 20 minutes.)Needs training – He continuously whimpers when his favorite human is out of sight. He shows strong attachment to one particular person and shows anxiety when that person is missing even for a second. However, he is ok when other people go missing. He's okay when left home alone - settles down, not a big issue. LEASH MANNERSOld Pro – Doesn’t pull hard but he tends to walk toward his left. He may get startled when he finds you walking behind him. CUDDLE BUG LEVELMedium – He likes to snuggle next to you with his butt attached to your side. However, he also likes to rest in his favorite spot as long as his favorite human is observable. JUMPING ON PEOPLE TO SAY HELLOCalm Greetings – Marshmallow often lifts his front paws to greet new people, but he doesn't typically jump on them. He will jump on his humans when they return from outside but he easily takes corrections. CRATE TRAININGNot at all – Don’t even have one. He is fine in the household.  Medical statusHealthy for their age as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm tested if coming from Tennessee or Puerto Rico; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake. Most seniors do well in the city after they’ve had time to adjust to a new environment, but some never adapt and need homes in the burbs.  Potty trained?Probably! Seniors usually are, but all will have transitional accidents for the first week or so. Seniors tend to need potty breaks more often than younger dogs though, and they can lose their ability to fully control their potty habits as they continue to age, so willingness to be flexible with cleanup and wee pads if necessary is important.  Social with other dogs?Yes, but we don’t know to what degree yet. Some enjoy the company of other calm dogs, others can coexist well but prefer to keep to themselves. We’ll learn more soon. Social with cats?Probably. Seniors are usually mellow enough that they are able to coexist well with cats.  Comfortable with children?  (ALWAYS requires adult supervision)We’re not sure yet, but we try to err on the side of caution. Respectful kids ages 8 and up are probably a safe bet. Children must always be monitored and taught to interact with dogs of any age respectfully.  Medical statusHealthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm tested if coming from the South or Puerto Rico; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake. Adopters will need to be ready for senior care – at a minimum, that will be annual checkups including senior bloodwork and a dental post adoption (most senior rescues need one). Story
Rita is an adorable, friendly, spunky little 7lb bundle of joy! She gets along with anyone and everyone. She loves to give kisses and be as close to her humans as possible at all times! She is pretty high energy and would do best with a young, active owner commited to getting this girl exercise and socialization. She would not do well at home alone all day while her owner is at work, for example. Rita is located in Houston TX and will not be transported until she is adopted. The adopter is responsible for paying for her transport in addition to the adoption fee. The adoption fee is $850. The first step is to fill out an application at www.recycleddogsrescue.org No inquiries will be responded to - only completed applications. https://youtube.com/shorts/72vEhGGjio0?feature=share
