Story
History: Mattie came into rescue from a local impound in very rough shape. She was extremely matted, covered in sores, and had severe edema on her back left leg. After receiving lots of TLC and medical care (including laser treatments to her leg), she has recovered beautifully and is now ready to find her forever home!
A Note from the Foster: Mattie, who we lovingly call Nancy (think the Stranger Things character that is one tough woman!), is purely delightful! We absolutely adore her!!! Even though she came into rescue in such a horrible state and what must have been an awful situation, you would not know it given her happy demeanor! Mattie/Nancy loves life! She loves playing with toys (fetch is her jam) and our resident dog, Mona. While she was a little standoffish towards Mona at first, we think it was because Mona was bigger than her, and she may not have had experience with a bigger dog before. After just a day or two, she learned how to play nicely and LOVES it! In an ideal world, she would have another fur friend in her forever home, one that is around her size, because she has bonded so nicely with our dog and seems to really benefit from the companionship.
Mattie/Nancy is almost completely healed from her leg injury. She only has a tiny scab left and some missing hair on her back leg. She also has some scabbing on the tips of her ears that will need to be monitored, but she is not bothered by any of it. We question if the scabbing on her ears was due to some frostbite??? Regardless, she seems healthy and completely unbothered!
Mattie/Nancy seems to be housebroken, in our opinion. She had a couple accidents on the first day, but on a schedule, Mattie/Nancy has had no further accidents! She has only gone potty outside for us, so no potty pads in our home! Even on these cold days, with her sweatshirt on and some booties, she willingly goes outside and does her business! We were thrilled with how quickly she caught on!
Mattie/Nancy is kennel-trained. She has her kennel next to our dog’s kennel during the day, and she prefers to have her kennel in our bedroom at night. She has never had an accident in there and does not seem to mind it at all! She will occasionally whine if she thinks she’s missing out on something fun, but she is otherwise quiet and will entertain herself with toys.
Given her tiny size, we feel a house with older children would be best. She is really small, which makes her so lovable! Mattie/Nancy can also be a little mouthy when she plays, so her sharp teeth can be a little much if she gets too worked up. If corrected, though, she will calm down and just gives kisses. Ideally, we hope Nancy can join a home that will truly embrace her social nature. She loves to interact with people and is super curious about what’s going on. She’s a social butterfly that just flits from one source of entertainment to the next, which is so cute and endearing.
Honestly, whoever gets to bring Mattie/Nancy into their home will be SOOO lucky!!! She is funny, happy, snuggly, and just a love bug! We are going to miss her so much and are happy to say we were part of her journey…
