Story
Otis was adopted in Jacksonville, FL in 2014. Otis has lived with another dog and two cats at times over the last decade and gets along very well with other pets. His age at adoption was unknown but it is suspected he’s 12 years old. As he has aged, he has required more love and attention that we are struggling to provide as we have a home with a new born and two other toddlers. He is not blind but is vision impaired. He is incredibly loving and loyal and wants nothing more than to cuddle and curl up by your side.

Story
Lolli came into rescue as an owner surrender on 9/7.  He has an energetic puppy energy, being only 18 most old.  Walks well on a leash, telling you when he has to go outside and will let you know when he wants his own space. He would do better in a house with no kids, would be fine with another dog.  It's a must that obedience training is done with Lolli so he is taught manners and has consistent rules. He loves to lay by his person getting petted, taking walks is a must as he loves them, and he doesn't mind sleeping in his crate with this stuffed animal at night. Lolli doesn't love being left alone, so he needs someone who isn't gone 10 hours days.    Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.December 6, 2023, 10:06 pm

Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Story
In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Sweetie is a 10 pound Shih Tzu mix who is just less than a year old. It is no surprise that she is named Sweetie, because she is just as sweet as can be. Sweetie came into rescue when her owner could no longer care for her. Unfortunately, she had been very neglected. She received little attention and had, in fact, never even been groomed. Her coat was very matted, and being groomed for the first time in her life was very traumatic for her. She will be fearful of grooming for a while, but once she is groomed on a regular basis, she will most likely get used to it. But for the next several groomings she will need the understanding of a patient groomer. Sweetie is a little wary of strangers, and may retreat from them until she gets to know them. But once she recognizes you, and decides you’re okay, she will shower you with enthusiasm and attention. She wants to be held, but she is so excited and it will involve lots of stroking, ear massaging, petting and moving around in your arms. She is not a quiet, calm, lay at your side type of lap dog. Sweetie will entertain herself throwing her toys and squeaking them. Having someone in the home who will interact and play with her would be even more fun for her. She also loves to sprint around in her foster mom's fenced yard, so having a secure fenced yard in which she can explore and run would be great. Even though Sweetie is a young, energetic dog, she is quiet most of the time and does not bark much. She sleeps with her foster mom and Shih Tzu foster brother, together in their “big bed”. Sweetie’s foster mom is helping her with house training, but her new adopter(s) must continue to work with Sweetie, which will include sticking to a regular schedule and taking her out frequently, as well as daily walks in order for her to be fully trained. These are the requirements for Sweetie’s new family: • Sweetie should be the sole dog in the family, because she craves attention and would prefer not to share it with another dog. • A fenced yard would be ideal because she truly enjoys running around in the yard. This is not a deal breaker if her new family is able and willing to take her on a couple long, brisk walks every day so that she gets plenty of exercise. • Sweetie prefers to have company all the time, so her new family will be with her most of the time. • Sweetie is a very young dog who could likely live another 15 years. For this reason, we will only accept applications from age appropriate individuals who will be able to care for her for the rest of her life. • Sweetie may enjoy being around children over the age of ten who have the energy to play with her and keep her busy. But she is very tiny so the children must be experienced with small dogs and understand how to appropriately and carefully play with them. • The adopter should live within 75 miles of New Brighton, MN. Sweetie is current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. She will be spayed on November 15th. Sweetie has cherry eye in both eyes, and will be having surgery to repair this on November 29th. She will be available for adoption after a brief recovery from the eye surgery. Sweetie's adoption fee is $470.00 plus $40.07 sales tax for a total of $510.07. To meet Sweetie, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see her and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at Chuck and Don’s at 6821 York Avenue South, Edina near Southdale.

Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Petey is an 8-year-old male Shih Tzu mix that weighs 15 pounds. He has beautiful curly black hair with a small white mark on his chest. Petey came into rescue when we were contacted by a veterinary clinic, where he was taken to be euthanized because his owners didn’t want him anymore. The vet thought Petey was a sweet boy and wouldn’t, in all good conscience, euthanize him, so the owners just gave him to the clinic. Petey had been badly neglected by his owners, was horribly matted and had no previous veterinary care. When he was evaluated by the veterinarian, Petey was found to have chronic kidney disease. He is now on a very specific prescription diet for kidney disease and is doing very well. He cannot have any other food or treats because his kidney disease will return and he will prematurely die. But if maintained on the prescription diet, he can live a long, healthy, happy life. No other medications, other than the diet, are necessary. Petey is a loving, happy guy. He follows his people and wants to be by you or at least always be able to see you. He likes to spend his evenings sitting with you. He enjoys going outside and loves a fenced in yard. Petey is pretty well house trained, and his foster parents continue to work on that by letting him out every couple hours during the day, and by having piddle pads available for him at night. He sleeps contently in his own bed at night. He does not enjoy the company of other dogs in the house, so it would be best if Petey is the only dog in the house. An adults only home would suit him perfectly, although older children (older than 12 years), who are quiet and respectful would be okay. These are the requirements for Petey’s new family: • An adult, stay at home family, although older children would be okay. • Must be the only dog in the family. • Petey does not do stairs so he needs to live in a single story home. • A fenced yard is a must. He loves to explore the outdoors, but as importantly, he must be let out every 2-3 hours to urinate, and a fenced yard would facilitate that. • Petey needs a family that can willingly afford his prescription kidney disease diet, and be vigilant about feeding him ONLY the prescribed food, including treats. He must stay on this for the rest of his life in order to remain healthy. • A family within 60 miles of the Twin Cities. • Commit to attending the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion every year in September. Petey is neutered, current on vaccinations and on heartworm and flea preventative. He is scheduled for a dental January 3rd at Rice Creek with a recheck of labs scheduled a month later in February, also at Rice Creek. Petey’s adoption fee is $270.00 plus $23.02 sales tax for a total cost of $293.02. To meet Petey, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Story
Hi! My name is McGruff and I am from a shelter in Oklahoma! From McGruff: Single white male seeking long term committed relationship. I have beautiful expressive brown eyes and curly blond hair. I love to snuggle. I will keep you warm all four seasons. I enjoy walks... really ANYTHING to be with you! I will protect you from squirrels and strangers. From the foster: McGruff is a sweet boy who wants to be with his person at all times. So much so, he has separation anxiety. He is doing well with his current medications but in the past has been destructive when left alone. He does well in his crate so it is important that when he is left that he is put in his crate so he isn't destructive. It would be best that his person is mainly home (retired, work from home) He has decided squirrels are the enemy, the furry beasts do love to torment him... (they know he is on a tether and stay just beyond his reach). He gets along fine with the other dogs in the house. He will share dog beds and lap space. No shared walls for this guy. At times he will sing the song of his people. (squirrels, rabbits, walkers bring a need to sound the alarm...) He is getting better at calming when guests arrive and does have medication that he can take prior to known stressful situations. He is a sweetie and just wants to be loved and to be with his person. Are you ready to be his everything? Medical Information: Since my arrival at Secondhand Hounds I've been seen at the SHH Veterinary Center and my medical team addressed a few things my adopter should know about! At my first exam, the Vet noticed I needed dental surgery, which was performed on 8/23/23. I had 7 teeth extracted, but I recovered well and my adopter should monitor oral health with my primary care vet in the future. My adopter should also monitor my knees as it was noted that I have grade 1 Medial Patellar Luxation on both knees (rear legs) that can be controlled or supported with joint supplements, however this is something that should be monitored by my adopter with my primary care vet in the future as well. There were a few masses noted, one on my neck and one on my scrotum. The mass on my neck was drained, determined to be benign and no surgical intervention was required. The mass on my scrotum was excised, submitted to a pathologist for testing and it was determined to be a low grade mast cell tumor. The SHH Vet says removal with wide enough margins like I had will most likely be curative. My foster has been working with me on separation anxiety and I have done well on a daily anxiety treatment called Fluoxetine. This medication may be needed life long depending on my needs in my new home. I'm sure my foster mom would be happy to talk more about this with a potential adopter!
