Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Simone is a shih tzu mix who is believed to be about 8 years old. Although we don't know much about the start of her life, we know Simone (who is called Monie in her foster home) is a mellow, sweet senior lady. She kennels easily and spends the day there while her foster family is at work. She sleeps on her dog bed on the floor in her foster mom's room at night. Monie seems to be house trained and will hang out by the back door when she needs to go potty. If we don't get her outside when she's sitting there, she will have an accident, but she seems housetrained when kept on a schedule. Simone lives with two other dogs in her foster home and does well.  She doesn't seek out playtime with them, but she does like to snuggle up to them during nap time. She is happy to sit on a lap and get pets and love all day long! Monie also likes to run around and explore in the backyard, but life outside the backyard can be a little scary for her. She does get nervous in the car and we're working on helping her walk comfortably on leash.   While we don't know her exact age, we can assume life hasn't always been easy for her. When Simone arrived in rescue, she had tumors on her chest and belly, had never been spayed, and had teeth crumbling out of her mouth. Luckily, surgeries and vet care have all gone incredibly well and she is healthy and looking for love. She only has three teeth left, but does well when her food is mixed with a little water to soften it up. She is ready to find the perfect home where she can spend her golden years. If you're willing to give this sweet soul a chance, fill out an application to meet her today!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Please go to our website www.wagsmn.org and fill out an Adoption Application.  Once the application is processed, a Wags representative will contact you, answer any questions you may have, and set up a time/location for a meet and greet!  A home visit is required prior to adoption.  Thank you for choosing to adopt! Breed and temperament determination:  Wags & Whiskers Animal Rescue attempts to determine breed and temperament using a combination of looks, information provided to us at intake, and our experience with the animal while in our Rescue.  We do not guarantee this determination. Story
Lolli came into rescue as an owner surrender on 9/7.  He has an energetic puppy energy, being only 18 most old.  Walks well on a leash, telling you when he has to go outside and will let you know when he wants his own space. He would do better in a house with no kids, would be fine with another dog.  It's a must that obedience training is done with Lolli so he is taught manners and has consistent rules. He loves to lay by his person getting petted, taking walks is a must as he loves them, and he doesn't mind sleeping in his crate with this stuffed animal at night. Lolli doesn't love being left alone, so he needs someone who isn't gone 10 hours days.    Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.December 6, 2023, 10:06 pm

Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Story
In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Meet Archie, a gold and white Shih Tzu/Bichon born on 12/19/22. Archie is a very energetic little guy that enjoys playing and investigating everything new. He sometimes starts getting into things he shouldn’t, but is quickly diverted. When he isn't lying next to his foster mom, he is chewing on a chew stick or playing with his foster sibling, which includes running back and forth from room to room or wrestling. Archie is still working on housetraining. His foster parents take him out regularly and frequently to help with his potty training, but he also uses potty pads when needed. His new family must continue with his housetraining so that he consistently goes outdoors rather than relying on a pad. Archie eats three small meals a day and has transitioned to adult food. He is getting along with his new foster dog siblings and would do well with another small playful dog who has similar young energy, or he could also be the only dog in the house. His foster parents are helping him learn good house manners, which include when it’s appropriate to bark, not jumping on people, and learning good behavior. Puppies require a lot of training and attention, but he will be a great addition to any family that has the patience, dedication and desire to meet the needs of a puppy. These are the requirements for Archie’s new family: 1. Because Archie is one year old, and will most likely live 16+ years, applications will only be accepted from age appropriate individuals who will be able to care for Archie for the rest of his life. 2. Applications will be considered if children in the home are 10 years or older, and if they have had experience interacting with a young, small dog. 3. Archie will require training beyond just housetraining, so enrolling him and his new family in a puppy training class is strongly advised. His family must be committed to his continued training. 4. Must be home most of the day (not gone generally more than 3 hours). 5. A fenced yard would be great, but is not a deal breaker. If there is no fenced yard, his family must be willing and able to take Archie on a couple very long walks every day (weather permitting). 6. Live within 60 miles of Saint Paul, Minnesota and agree to attend the annual rescue reunion held each year in September. Archie is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. His adoption fee is $470.00 plus $40.07 sales tax for a total adoption fee of $510.07. To meet Archie, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at Chuck and Don’s at 6821 York Avenue South, Edina near Southdale.

Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Sweetie is a 10 pound Shih Tzu mix who is just less than a year old. It is no surprise that she is named Sweetie, because she is just as sweet as can be. Sweetie came into rescue when her owner could no longer care for her. Unfortunately, she had been very neglected. She received little attention and had, in fact, never even been groomed. Her coat was very matted, and being groomed for the first time in her life was very traumatic for her. She will be fearful of grooming for a while, but once she is groomed on a regular basis, she will most likely get used to it. But for the next several groomings she will need the understanding of a patient groomer. Sweetie is a little wary of strangers, and may retreat from them until she gets to know them. But once she recognizes you, and decides you’re okay, she will shower you with enthusiasm and attention. She wants to be held, but she is so excited and it will involve lots of stroking, ear massaging, petting and moving around in your arms. She is not a quiet, calm, lay at your side type of lap dog. Sweetie will entertain herself throwing her toys and squeaking them. Having someone in the home who will interact and play with her would be even more fun for her. She also loves to sprint around in her foster mom's fenced yard, so having a secure fenced yard in which she can explore and run would be great. Even though Sweetie is a young, energetic dog, she is quiet most of the time and does not bark much. She sleeps with her foster mom and Shih Tzu foster brother, together in their “big bed”. Sweetie’s foster mom is helping her with house training, but her new adopter(s) must continue to work with Sweetie, which will include sticking to a regular schedule and taking her out frequently, as well as daily walks in order for her to be fully trained. These are the requirements for Sweetie’s new family: • Sweetie should be the sole dog in the family, because she craves attention and would prefer not to share it with another dog. • A fenced yard would be ideal because she truly enjoys running around in the yard. This is not a deal breaker if her new family is able and willing to take her on a couple long, brisk walks every day so that she gets plenty of exercise. • Sweetie prefers to have company all the time, so her new family will be with her most of the time. • Sweetie is a very young dog who could likely live another 15 years. For this reason, we will only accept applications from age appropriate individuals who will be able to care for her for the rest of her life. • Sweetie may enjoy being around children over the age of ten who have the energy to play with her and keep her busy. But she is very tiny so the children must be experienced with small dogs and understand how to appropriately and carefully play with them. • The adopter should live within 75 miles of New Brighton, MN. Sweetie is current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. She will be spayed on November 15th. Sweetie has cherry eye in both eyes, and will be having surgery to repair this on November 29th. She will be available for adoption after a brief recovery from the eye surgery. Sweetie's adoption fee is $470.00 plus $40.07 sales tax for a total of $510.07. To meet Sweetie, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see her and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at Chuck and Don’s at 6821 York Avenue South, Edina near Southdale.

Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Petey is an 8-year-old male Shih Tzu mix that weighs 15 pounds. He has beautiful curly black hair with a small white mark on his chest. Petey came into rescue when we were contacted by a veterinary clinic, where he was taken to be euthanized because his owners didn’t want him anymore. The vet thought Petey was a sweet boy and wouldn’t, in all good conscience, euthanize him, so the owners just gave him to the clinic. Petey had been badly neglected by his owners, was horribly matted and had no previous veterinary care. When he was evaluated by the veterinarian, Petey was found to have chronic kidney disease. He is now on a very specific prescription diet for kidney disease and is doing very well. He cannot have any other food or treats because his kidney disease will return and he will prematurely die. But if maintained on the prescription diet, he can live a long, healthy, happy life. No other medications, other than the diet, are necessary. Petey is a loving, happy guy. He follows his people and wants to be by you or at least always be able to see you. He likes to spend his evenings sitting with you. He enjoys going outside and loves a fenced in yard. Petey is pretty well house trained, and his foster parents continue to work on that by letting him out every couple hours during the day, and by having piddle pads available for him at night. He sleeps contently in his own bed at night. He does not enjoy the company of other dogs in the house, so it would be best if Petey is the only dog in the house. An adults only home would suit him perfectly, although older children (older than 12 years), who are quiet and respectful would be okay. These are the requirements for Petey’s new family: • An adult, stay at home family, although older children would be okay. • Must be the only dog in the family. • Petey does not do stairs so he needs to live in a single story home. • A fenced yard is a must. He loves to explore the outdoors, but as importantly, he must be let out every 2-3 hours to urinate, and a fenced yard would facilitate that. • Petey needs a family that can willingly afford his prescription kidney disease diet, and be vigilant about feeding him ONLY the prescribed food, including treats. He must stay on this for the rest of his life in order to remain healthy. • A family within 60 miles of the Twin Cities. • Commit to attending the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion every year in September. Petey is neutered, current on vaccinations and on heartworm and flea preventative. He is scheduled for a dental January 3rd at Rice Creek with a recheck of labs scheduled a month later in February, also at Rice Creek. Petey’s adoption fee is $270.00 plus $23.02 sales tax for a total cost of $293.02. To meet Petey, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph.
