Oreo arrived at the shelter feeling quite nervous and is still in the process of warming up to his new caretakers. His previous family made the difficult decision to surrender him because they knew they couldn't provide the level of care he truly deserves, and they want nothing more than for him to find a home that can fully commit to his bright future. Oreo is an incredibly intelligent and active young boy who embodies the best traits of his working-breed heritage. He is a quintessential "velcro dog" who thrives on human companionship and dislikes being left alone. Because he is so smart, he will need a family with the patience and time to focus on his continued training and socialization. While he has lived successfully with other dogs, cats, and children, he would do best in a home with older children. True to his Cattle Dog roots, he has a natural instinct to herd and may "nip" at heels or hands to get your attention when he’s excited. In a home environment, Oreo is a devoted partner, but he does have a few specific needs to ensure he feels safe. He has shown some resource guarding regarding his food, so he is best separated from other dogs during mealtime to help him feel secure. Just like in the Trolls movies, these puppies are learning that the world can be bright, kind, and full of friendship. This group of pups haven't been around many people, so they are pretty scared and nervous right now. Some are starting to open up, while others are still finding their rhythm. The staff is working to teach them that the world (and people!) can be a safe and loving place. These pups will need adopters who understand that every Troll learns to sing their own song in their own time. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! We are a litter of 8, and our rescue story had lots of surprises! What started as a call to save 4 puppies quickly turned into a full-on puppy treasure hunt. Surprise! There were even more of us hiding under a storage container… and our sweet mama too! With some yummy food and gentle coaxing, we were all scooped up and brought to safety together. Now we’re warm, cozy, and living the good life with soft blankets—and we’re ready to find our forever families!
