A committed home is required for him to make the trip, and we’re hopeful the right person is out there to give him the fresh start he deserves. Meet Rusty Rusty is an approximately 1–2-year-old Australian Shepherd mix who is ready for a second chance. He was heartbreakingly found abandoned in a hotel room by his previous owner, left alone for days with no food or water. After being discovered, animal control picked him up, and he is now sitting in a kill shelter where he is at risk of euthanasia if he isn’t tagged for rescue. Despite everything he has been through, Rusty is incredibly sweet and friendly. He enjoys being around people and has a gentle, loving personality. Rusty has tested friendly with dogs and kids, making him a great fit for many family environments. He has not yet been tested with cats. Rusty likely has lived in a home before and may already be potty trained, though we can’t say for certain. He does walk well on the leash! Because his past is largely unknown, he may need some refreshers with crate training and home life as he settles into a new routine. At around 45 pounds, Rusty is a great medium size and would love a home where he can go for walks, learn new things, and finally feel safe. Rusty has already endured so much, but he remains a loving, resilient dog who just wants a person to call his own. With a foster or adopter in place, he can travel north on Saturday, March 14 and begin the next chapter of his life. Age: Approx. 1–2 years Gender: Male Weight: 45 lbs Breed: Australian Shepherd mix Spayed/Neutered: Not yet Potty Trained: Likely, but unsure Crate Trained: Unsure Leash Manners: Good Good with Dogs: Yes Good with Cats: Not tested Good with Kids: Yes Rusty urgently needs a foster or adopter to make it out of the shelter alive and secure his chance to travel north. If you can open your home to him, please apply today. www.muttlife.org Adoption fees include the cost of spay/neuter procedure, up-to-date dewormer, vaccinations, heartworm prevention (age appropriate), and certified veterinarian inspection within 30 days of adoption. __________ Review adoption requirements and ensure you meet the necessary criteria to apply! https://www.muttlife.org/adoption-policies _________ ADOPTION PROCESS: 1.) Apply: Fill out an adoption application completely and submit all necessary documents. 2.) Application Decision: approved applicants will be notified via phone call and email. 3.) Foster-to-Adopt Trial Period: After approval, you have the opportunity to do a meet and greet and bring your dog home! You get a 5-day foster-to-adopt (FTA) period to make sure it's the right fit. 4.) Final Decision: By the end of the FTA period, please let us know your final decision to adopt or return the dog to our rescue. 5.) Home Visit: After the adoption process, we conduct a home visit either in person or via Zoom meeting to ensure that everything is going well with the transition and to answer any final questions you may have. 6.) Neuter/spay for puppies: for dogs who are not fixed at the time of adoption, we will reimburse for the procedure once we receive proof of spay/neuter. The procedure MUST be done at HAWS Snip Clinic in Waukesha, WI, or Wisconsin Community Veterinarian Center in Madison, WI. If you would like to go through your veterinarian or another location, we will reimburse $150 once we receive proof of the procedure. We recommend spay/neuter around 6 months old. **Note: Adoptions are not considered final until the dog is neutered/spayed if applicable**
