Story
My name is Holden, but most often my foster family calls me "Mr. Handsome" or "Sweet Boy." I am both of those things, if I do say so myself. One thing you need to know about me is that I had a back problem so now I cannot use my rear legs. This is VERY common in dachshunds. However, it doesn't slow me down one bit. This gorgeous lover boy is a gentle soul with a bark that sounds like bubbles and he’s also a very talented squeaky toy musician. Sometimes foster ma has to confiscate it so she can work! Other than that he’s a quiet guy who loves to cuddle, take sun naps outside on the deck and beg for dinner like any other dog. I may not walk like other dogs do, but I sure do have a happy life and a happy attitude. My foster mom can teach you to take care of me, it's not difficult. It's not any more work than any other dog is, it's just a bit different. Here's what you get when you adopt me: bedroom eyes, soft long hair in a beautiful mahogany color, cuddles galore, and a constant companion. I am a very good and gentle boy! I don't bark very much, but when I do, my foster ma says I sound like I am underwater. I have no idea what that means, but I'll demonstrate when we meet. I need a home with lots of toys, snuggly blankets, and someone willing to deal with a little poop once in a while. My bladder needs to be expressed manually, but you just squeeze my tummy and out it comes. No biggie. Takes 20 seconds and it's super easy to learn. I love meeting new people, and I am very friendly to everyone i meet. If you are interested in adopting Holden, you can fill out an application right on our website! Go to dreamhappytails.org/adoptform2.shtml . Holden 's adoption fee is $350.00. All adoption fees go directly to veterinary care for DREAM dachshunds. Holden will go to his new home microchipped, altered, heartworm tested, and up to date on vaccinations. Most dogs' veterinary expenses are greater than our adoption fees. DREAM is an all-volunteer rescue group. We focus on the metro Atlanta area and can assist throughout the state of Georgia. Because we are all volunteers, we can consider applications only within an hour of these areas. DREAM does not recommend purebred dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a doxie's back. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook

How delicious is a dapple? Vince is no exception to that hard and fast rule. This boy has personality in SPADES! He is such a cool little wiener dog with a curious way of seeing the world. His previous owners loved him but did not have the means to care for him properly when he suffered an IVDD back injury. Once he came into DREAM, we took Vance in right away to see our specialist vet, who performed surgery on three ruptured discs. Since then, he's gone through physical therapy and his foster mama is a pro at helping him through all of his stretches and exercises, and short of getting him a Pilates reformer, he's gotten the works for sure. While the surgery and therapy has helped him greatly, he will need to be expressed to help him to go potty. When kept on a schedule of expressing, he’s house trained . To help him get around, Vance has a new set of wheels and he absolutely loves rolling around exploring all the world has to offer. He's a friendly little muppet who loves his people and has the gumption to thrive no matter his circumstances. It's impossible to be around him without smiling. If you are interested in adopting Vance, you can fill out an application right on our website. Go to our online adoption application. Vance's adoption fee is $400. All adoption fees go directly to veterinary care for DREAM dachshunds. Vance will go to his / her new home microchipped, spayed/neutered, heartworm tested, up to date on vaccinations, and with all other medical needs addressed. Almost every dog's veterinary expenses exceed our adoption fees; we are a non-profit. DREAM is an all-volunteer rescue group. We focus on the metro Atlanta area and can assist throughout the state of Georgia. Since our rescue is entirely run and staffed by volunteers, our ability to travel long distances for adoptions is somewhat limited. We focus on Georgia, but if you are in a neighboring state, we might be able to work something out - we'll expect you to do your part. Join the Chiweenie Clubini! Bogie is about the cutest, sweetest little pudding pot you've ever laid eyes on. Bogie is the whole package of an adorable little long haired solid black (except for a little white on his chest) chihuahua. He's 14 lbs of puppy energy and around 1 year 6 months old, just a boy in dog years. And two words for you...potty trained.HALLELUJAH - amirite? This little nug-nug was [just barely] captured running down the interstate with no collar and no real hope. A good samaritan saw Bogie hobbling down an interstate and pulled over to see about him. He was very frail, hungry, afraid and determined not to be caught. The good samaritan called her husband to come help catch Bogie which was not an easy task, but they got it done. He was taken to a vet and after x-rays confirmed he had a fractured leg which had happened several weeks prior, and that the bone had already started healing and was lined up perfectly. Crate rest and confinement was a must so the bone could finish healing and stay lined up through the process. No one really knows for sure, but we believe Bogie was probably hit by a car. The sweet lady that saved him could not keep him long term so he ended up at DREAM. In November Bogie’s foster mom noticed he started limping and walking on 3 legs. The fractured leg that was healing nicely was the weight bearing leg. It was his hip on the other leg giving him trouble. After more extensive x-rays we learned he needed a total hip replacement. After the growth plates closed he got a brand new hip on January 9th. He’s loving his new hip and raring to go, go, go! He feels so much better and just wants to play. He can finally be the normal little happy playful boy he deserves to be. One thing he’s ready for now, is a forever home! Now that he has a clean bill of health from the doctors after his surgery, he is showing how much he loves to play chase or light puppy wrestling with his youngest foster sibling. All during the time he wasn’t allowed to walk or run, he would lay on his back in his foster dad’s chair and play gently. He enjoys tugging on a rope, chewing on rubber toys and chasing the ball. He if fascinated by flying bugs and tries to chase them. He has a good eye for those pesky squirrels and will go after them with great excitement. This boy absolutely needs a fenced in yard so he can pursue his delight in running free. Bogie is soooooo very sweet. Not a big kisser but he is already a pro with regards to lap time. He’s a Velcro dog because you can’t leave the room without him being on your heels. He would definitely do best with another fur sibling in the house. He cuddles with his foster home pack for naps or bedtime. He thrives on routine (as most dogs do). He is fully satisfied to stay in a crate when you leave or at bed time. But I’m sure he’d love to snuggle in his human’s bed as well. Because of his recovering from surgery, walks were not an option for two months. At first he was suspicious of the leash, but after 10 minutes on a leash he got the hang of it. He is very teachable and curious. His tail shows his true colors, wagging almost constantly as everyone who meets him tells him what a good boy he is. He's enjoying lots of good food and putting some weight on, and is a great little companion with his people and can hang with other small dogs in the house. Whomever ever gets this lad, will have a friend for life. He is smart, curious, playful and sweet. What more could a person want? If you're interested in sweet baby Bogie, don't wait to fill out an application. If you are interested in adopting Bogie, you can fill out an application right on our website! Go to our online adoption application. Bogie's adoption fee is $450. All adoption fees go directly to veterinary care for DREAM dachshunds. Right? Can you EVEN with that sweet look on his face? Buddy Ross is a total nugget; we kind of love him - but yeah, we love them alllll, so there's that. Through no fault of his own, Buddy comes to DREAM after his previous owner became unable to care for him. He's been loved his whole life, and he has a lot of love to give. He enjoys playing with toys, and gets on well with other dogs. We aren't sure about cats. Buddy is an Isabella dachshund (silvery blue fur) and like most Isabellas, he has some hair loss aka alopecia. He doesn't take medicine for it, but would need sun protection like anyone else if he were exposed to the elements. He'll also want a little doggo sweater in the colder weather. His previous owner used to put Skin-So-Soft on him which he responded well to. He's accustomed to using wee-pads to do his biznezz, but we're working on getting him used to the idea of fertilizing the grass instead of going inside. If you're looking for a friendly, low-key, playful companion look no further than Buddy Ross. More info and photos coming soon! Complete an application right online. If you are interested in adopting Buddy Ross, you can fill out an application right on our website! Go to our online adoption application. Buddy Ross's adoption fee is $350. Story
Ella Grace is a 6 ½ year old sweet little long haired red beauty! She gets along great with people and other dogs. Ella will thrive in a family that has another small dog for her to play with. She also loves entertaining herself playing with her toys which her foster dad says is really cute to watch. She adores being held and cuddled. Ella will prance around the door when she wants to go outside to go potty. As long as she is taken out on a schedule and upon her “dancing around the door” request, she’s totally potty trained. Ella enjoys daily leash walks and loves to greet people she meets with some barking. But hey, she IS a Dachshund and she likes to be heard! Once they extend a hand for her to sniff she’s totally fine with anybody she meets. But if Ella sees a squirrel or a cat while out on a walk, you better make sure you have a tight hold on the leash because her big prey drive kicks into overdrive! Families with cats are definitely not a match for Ella! Sweet Ella has had some health challenges which all can be easily managed. She had a bladder stone that has now been removed. The good news, this type of stone can be prevented from forming by feeding her a particular type of kibble readily available from your vet or online delivery service. Easy - Peasy!! She also has a history of seizures that were left untreated before she came to DREAM. Ella is under the care of a specialist that has tweaked her medication she takes twice a day to keep the seizures at bay. The seizures are now to the point of being mild, short, and not very often. Seizures are definitely manageable with medication and regular check ins with the vet which can typically be done by phone. If you are interested in adopting Ella Grace, you can fill out an application right on our website! Go to our online adoption application. Ella Grace's adoption fee is $xxx. All adoption fees go directly to veterinary care for DREAM dachshunds. Story
This may be the most unique profile you ever read. Yes, we say READ. Why? Well....we aren't going to show any pictures of this dog until you have. Intrigued yet? We hope so. Read on! The reason we want you to READ first is to get a good understanding of who this dog is....and NOT what he looks like. He is absolutely, positively adorable, and everyone instantly falls for him...but he is not for everyone. In fact, he is not for most. He has some serious health matters that most people won't take the time to read about or understand, much less be able to handle appropriately, simply because he's too cute. And these health matters are relatively easy to handle for the right person with the right attitude. Most just see tons of cuteness in front of them and instantly disregard everything else. He & DREAM can't afford for that to happen. We've spent a lot of time and effort (and financial resources) getting Dusty Britches back into good health, so we hope to truly inform you of him & his needs FIRST and then show you his photos later. We promise, you'll like them. So, let's dive in. Dusty Britches is a long-haired, neutered male, ~5+ years old (turns 6 in May.) Sweet as pie. Softest hair & most soulful eyes you've ever seen. He's a petite little guy. ~10 lbs, fluff and all. He came to us after his mom passed & his dad was no longer able to provide sufficient care for him. We quickly realized something was just not right with Dusty. He was constantly retching, massively anxious, and undiagnosed until he arrived at DREAM. To further complicate his matters, the anxiety also triggers his regurgitation. The vets confirmed our suspicions...he has both Megaesophagus (aka M.E.) and separation anxiety. Good news is he now has meds for both of these conditions. It's taken us a long time of working with Dusty to get here, but he's been so worth the effort. What is Megaesophagus? Good question. It's just as the name describes....Dusty Britches has a section in his throat (or esophagus) that is too large and causes some liquids and food to collect there, and not passing directly to the stomach. Dusty Britches has a team of specialists in this disease help to figure out where his irregularity is located (lower esophagus), that it is a mild situation compared to other M.E. dogs, and that it is now being well managed with 2 medications taken twice daily. Sildenafil helps constrict his throat muscles (making the enlarged place tighten up / get smaller prior to meal times) and Metoclopramide helps speed up digestion once food is in his stomach. These 2 meds have immensely improved his overall condition and have greatly minimized the amount of regurgitation he endures. The cost of these 2 meds is ~$12/month. M.E. also requires a fairly strict diet. Consistency is key. New foods or treats can aggravate his condition. We will share what has worked successfully with him, once we get to that stage with any applicant. Why is it important to control the regurg? Aspiration Pneumonia (aka A.P.) is the answer. It's something M.E. dogs become highly susceptible to. If he coughs up food that then enters the lungs, A.P. will occur...not "if" but "when" is always the case with foreign items entering the lungs. The substance, such as food, saliva, vomit, or medication, brings in bacteria which can cause the infection, and that bacteria quickly spreads. A.P. can be lethal if not treated, hence our desire to avoid it at all costs. And guess what? Since getting his meds figured out, we have not had any instances of A.P. Now let's chat about his separation anxiety. Dusty can be a nervous little guy at times...so much so that our vet recommended medication to help ease his worry. Dusty has proven once he bonds to you, he absolutely will adore you and HATES to be left alone. And his meds have helped this condition a bunch, but he has a lot of learned behaviors too. With that, we are seeking that loving & patient person who is willing to continue to work with Dusty on his behavior in a positive manner. DB would do best with 1 owner, or a partner that doesn't mind being "shunned" by him. Dusty just has a hard time bonding with more than 1 person at a time. He won't be aggressive to the others in a home - he will simply bark on occasion and run back to his 1 person. We've had him in multiple foster homes and he does well in all of them, but again, he relies on just 1 person in each home. And a crate at home is out of the question. He absolutely will not tolerate it, and it further aggravates his M.E. The only place he sits quietly in a crate in is at the vet's office. (Thank goodness for that - as he's spent much time there while he's been with us.) Fun fact - he's an EXCELLENT car rider. The car is a huge motivator & calming agent for him - he adores getting to go, lays right down, loves to sit while you shop or dine (proven Maxxinista - tee hee), and shows way more patience being in the car than he does waiting for someone to come home. But he can't go with us 24/7 & sometimes just has to stay at home. We give him a large hallway or bathroom (not the entire house), some soft music, and a soft bed to lay on. Sometimes he howls and cries. Sometimes he flings himself at the front door, but neither of these happens always. Sometimes, he's quiet & patient and just lays in his bed awaiting our return. Yep, we've seen it all on the Dusty-cam. ☺! To help Dusty with his anxiety, he takes another med for this. It too is twice daily, like the M.E. meds. It's a 1/2 tablet every 12 hours of Clomipramine and costs ~$40/mth. More fun facts about Dusty Britches. Dusty has a Bailey Chair (google it) that his foster parents made for him. Dusty is super easy to train b/c he is highly food motivated. He is also incredibly smart and eager to please. He took to his new chair with the greatest of ease. Dusty also knows a "wait" command. We use it for meal time so he doesn't rush the bowl. We also use it at the door to go outside. He LOVES to rush out the door to run thru the fenced-in yard. (He'd love for you to teach him more commands.) Dusty does enjoy sleeping in the big bed with his humans, even the partner he might be afraid of when out of the bed. He gives the best morning snuggles and wake-up kisses. Dusty really isn't into toys, but does love a good walk. Dusty also enjoys adventures like hiking or boat rides. Despite his anxiety, he really does love to go places with his people. Dusty just wants to please his person and get lots of reassurance that he's doing a good job. He now knows a "wait" command and we use it in many scenarios...like meal time, so he doesn't plow right into his food, or at the front door when we need to leave, so he doesn't try to go with us. He is known to run straight to the car door and beg to get in. Can you tell we've had a lot of fun with this boy, despite all we've had to work on? This boy is absolutely guaranteed to make you smile and want to give him the biggest hugs ever. He knows how to grab your heart and hold on tight. So...why do we share all this with you? It's because we want to set Dusty Britches up for success in his forever home. If you feel he is the type of dog for you, you don't mind the monthly financial commitment to his meds, you don't mind a little clean up from his M.E. and a little anxiety...then please apply for Dusty Britches. Once we receive your application and get thru the pre-screening process, we will then make contact with you, share lots of pictures, and start our next rounds of talks to see if he's still as good a match as you think he might be. We believe he's worth it, and for the right person, they will too. If you are interested in adopting Dusty Britches, you can fill out an application right on our website! Caroline was given to us by a family friend who could no longer care for her. We are also not able to care for her long term. I have been hoping to find a home for her amongst my current friends and family but have been unable to do so. Caroline is good with my larger dogs and my older children and our two cats. I’m not sure how she would do with small children. She does not appear to be spayed. I’m not sure when she was last taken to the vet. My family is not able to provide these things due to financial constraints and we would love to find her a home that could.
