Story
Introducing Chevy!     Sweet  Cool  Shy  Laid Back  - 126 lbs, black with white markings, Great Dane located in Columbia Heights, MN- 7 year old neutered male,  Birthday: estimated December 15, 2015  Chevy is currently chilling with his foster family while he waits for his forever family. This well-behaved boy can be unsure of new people and dogs at first, but warms up with the proper introductions. He does not currently live with any children, but has been observed interacting positively with children aged 9 and up. Due to his initial shyness and having no experience with cats, slow introductions will be necessary with any pets in his forever home. Chevy gets along best with laid back dogs. While this sweetheart is housebroken and has done well with unattended free roam, Chevy would prefer to have a family who is home more often than not. He possesses a strong understanding of: sit, down, shake, off, and leave it – although he may occasionally test your willingness to follow through on commands. A physical fence is not a requirement, but he should not be trusted off leash as he like to play “catch me if you can.” Chevy’s foster family has noted that he handles vet appointments, baths, nail trimming, and ear cleaning very well. Chevy’s favorite things to do during the day is go for a walk, get pets, and take a nap. Likes:  Going on walks   Car rides   Yummy Treats   Comfy places to sleep Dislikes: X Busy environmentsMedical/Health Issues: No health concerns!Chevy is patiently waiting to find his forever home! If you think you may be the adoptive home he is waiting for, this is what you need to do: - If you have already completed the application process and are an approved adopter with UMGDR, please contact Stephanie at stephanie@thegreatdanerescue.com to learn more about Chevy. - If you are not yet an approved adopter through UMGDR, you must complete our application process before you can be considered to adopt a dog through our rescue. Story
Introducing Barney, now called Jax! Affectionate Loving Adventurous Snuggly Jax is a magnificent Great Dane who is filled with joy, love, warmth, and a touch of adventure. He is an enthusiast when it comes to walks. He tends to need a bit of coaching to refine his walking due to him being so excited to take his human on a journey! His preference is to spend time with others, and while he's made great strides in being left alone, his true joy is in the company of his loved ones. He does not have previous experience with cats but has done well with other dogs, including small ones. He has had positive experiences with children aged 7 and older, showcasing his gentle and loving nature. Jax will offer a big bark to people entering his home but can be easily redirected. A physical fence is recommended, but not required for his adoptive home. Jax is a connoisseur of affection and can often be found snuggling his humans and stuffed animals. He also enjoys car rides and baths. His love knows no bounds, as he showers those around him with kisses and finds solace in peaceful slumber. Loud noises and getting his nails trimmed are two dislikes of his. In August of 2023, Jax started taking medication for low thyroid. He has since been taken off of this medication per his vet’s recommendation to see if his endocrine system is back to normal. Jax is a companion who will always brighten your day. If you're ready to embrace the love of this special Great Dane, please contact us by following one of the steps below. 1. Story
Introducing Jack! Silly Loving Playful Sweet  Personality: Jack is a loving companion who thrives in a structured daily routine. His affectionate nature makes him an ideal partner for someone looking for a devoted friend. He takes great joy in pleasing his people. However, he can be insecure at times, requiring a patient and understanding owner who can provide reassurance and comfort. Home & Family Musts: Jack needs a strong and confident owner who can provide leadership and advocate for him. He responds well to guidance and seeks a trustworthy person to lead him through life's adventures. Jack prefers a relaxed home environment, making an adoptive home with older or no children the best fit for him. His forever home will require a physical fence to keep him safe as he explores and plays due to him being deaf. Compatibility with Animals: Jack's reaction to cats is unknown, so a careful introduction and observation period will be necessary to ensure a harmonious relationship. He would be happiest as the only dog in the household, allowing him to bask in the undivided attention of his forever family. Likes & Dislikes: Jack loves playing with toys and spending quality time with his human friends. His ideal day includes play sessions, followed by relaxing on a comfy bed. Jack is not a fan of new situations and interacting with new dogs. Understanding and patience are key when introducing him to unfamiliar environments. Special Note: Jack is deaf, adding a unique aspect to his personality. Despite this, he is a remarkable loving companion who relies on his other senses to navigate the world. This loyal and loving friend is waiting for the right person to share his heart with. If you're ready to provide him with a structured routine, gentle guidance, and a home filled with love, Jack is eager to become your devoted companion. Please contact us by following one of the steps below. 1. If you have already completed the application process and are an approved adopter with UMGDR, please contact Jack’s Placement Coordinator at lindsay@thegreatdanerescue.com to learn more about him. 2. Story
Introducing Leonard! Patient Snuggly Affectionate Loves People Personality: Leonard is the epitome of snuggly and sweet. He thrives on attention and is dedicated to pleasing his people. While he excels in known environments with his calm and patient demeanor, he seeks a leader who can guide him through new situations when nerves arise. Social Skills: Leonard has a magical ability to win over the hearts of non-dog people and effortlessly bonds with children of all ages. His snuggly nature and gentle spirit make him a cherished companion in any family setting. Other Pets: While Leonard enjoys the company of people, he can be nervous around other dogs and requires slow introductions. He has very limited experience with cats, so slow introductions will also be necessary with them. Training: Leonard is a well-behaved gentleman who is housebroken, kennels nicely, and has mastered essential commands such as sit, stay, and okay (release word). His leash manners have greatly improved, and he only pulls occasionally. A physical fence is highly recommended to ensure his safety and well-being. Favorites and Dislikes: Leonard loves simple pleasures, including drinking water with ice cubes, snuggling, going for car rides and walks, and taking blissful naps with fuzzy blankets. He dislikes playing fetch and prefers his water on the cooler side. Medical/Health: Due to a sensitive stomach, Leonard thrives on a diet of whitefish or bison/beef dry food. He received a clean bill of health at his most recent vet visit. Leonard is eagerly waiting to find his forever home! If you think you may be the adoptive home he is waiting for, please complete one of the following two steps. 1. If you have already completed the application process and are an approved adopter with UMGDR, please contact Leonard’s Placement Coordinator at lindsay@thegreatdanerescue.com to learn more about him. 2. Story
Introducing Freya! Friendly Playful Outgoing Explorer Cuddler Silly  Basic Info: - 1 1/2 years old (est. March 1, 2022) - Great Dane, Spayed Female  - Coloring: Chocolate - Located in Cedar Falls, IA This young, playful pup is eagerly waiting for her forever home. Freya is a petite Dane, weighing in at just under 90lbs. She is smart, eager to learn, and takes well to being trained. Because she is young & curious, she might counter-surf and grab/chew things around the house if given the opportunity. However, she is crate-trained and housebroken! Her foster family noted that she walks nicely, has a good understanding of basic commands, and does not jump up on people. While Freya gets along with large and small dogs, she would love a house with another large dog that she can romp around with. An older dog that can help her to build her confidence is a bonus. Her surrendering home reports living with cats without issue, however, there is no experience with cats in the foster home. She is likely to do well with cats but would need slow, intentional introductions.  Freya enjoys getting attention from all people, however, she can be a bit shy around strangers initially. Again, slow intentional introductions are just what Freya needs to feel more comfortable and confident with new people and situations. She did live with a 7-year-old in her surrendering home and was reported to do very well. She does not have experience with younger children, but she has been getting along well with the foster's 10-year-old neighbor. Because noisy and busy environments can create some stress for Freya, a home with older children is preferred.  Likes: Going for walks (currently uses a harness) Sleeping on the couch Being surrounded by her family Dislikes: Baths Hard Requirements:  Because she is a young, curious explorer, Freya requires her forever home to have a physical fence. If you think you may be the family Freya is waiting for, this is what you need to do: - If you have already completed the application process and are an approved adopter with UMGDR, please contact Stephanie at stephanie@thegreatdanerescue.com to learn more about Freya. - If you are not yet an approved adopter through UMGDR, you must complete our application process before you can be considered to adopt a dog through our rescue. Story
Introducing Whisper, now called Alana!   Eager to Please Playful Affectionate Smart Alana is a lively and affectionate Great Dane who is a bundle of energy and love. Her foster family adores her sweet and silly personality. She thrives on the company of her family and would prefer to have them around more often than not. Being an active girl at heart, she would love to have another energetic dog in her adoptive home, but it is not a requirement. While Alana doesn't currently live with children, she has positively interacted with a 10 and 12-year-old, showcasing her adaptability and gentle nature. She requires slow introductions with strangers, a testament to her past experiences. Having completed a training program, she has made great strides in overcoming her initial fear of people, proving her resilience and capacity for growth. In the realm of doggy socialization, Alana is known to be submissive among her furry friends and will engage in roughhouse play with playful exuberance. She's also shown interest in cats, but her interactions have been inquisitive and not harmful. Alana is not just a joy to be around; she's also a well-trained companion. Her excellent knowledge of commands like Sit, Stay, Kennel Up, Down, Get Down, Settle Down, and Stop attests to her intelligence and eagerness to please. She loves going on walks and listens well to corrections. While she is an absolute delight, she does not find delight in getting her feet touched/nails trimmed and taking baths. This sweet girl is crate trained and has also done well with free roam, creating no destruction and having no accidents. Alana is currently taking Prozac to assist with controlling her anxiety. While a physical fence is not a requirement for Alana, her ideal home is one filled with love, activity, and stuffed toys. With her positive attitude and playful spirit, Alana is ready to be the heartbeat of your home, filling it with boundless joy and warmth. Are you ready to welcome this delightful Great Dane into your life and make each day brighter with her presence? 1. If you have already completed the application process and are an approved adopter with UMGDR, please contact Alana’s Placement Coordinator at michelle@thegreatdanerescue.com to learn more about her. 2.
