Story
Judy is living in a foster home! Please submit an application from our website and email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org to see if you're a match! You may have heard about the beagles that were in the news recently. A biomedical research facility in Wisconsin came under scrutiny, and agreed to release 1500 of the beagles they had kept for testing. Heartland was able to help by taking some of them in in early May. The beagles that were released to us were all mamas, having been used for both breeding and for testing at this facility. The day of their release was the first time they had ever touched grass, been pet, interacted with other dogs, been walked on leash, and so much more. They all went to foster homes within a few days of coming to Heartland, where they have slowly but surely learned how to “dog.” While we can’t undo years of living in a kennel, being deprived of fresh air and loving care, we have been amazed at how quickly they adapted to life on the outside. These girls are remarkable and resilient, and deserve homes that will continue the progress made in their foster homes. The most important thing for anyone interested in adopting one of these beagles is acknowledging that they aren’t on a typical timeline. For example, we celebrated with their fosters when they went potty outside in the grass for the first time! Only recently are they starting to play with toys, and solicit affection. Our girls are all exceptionally gentle souls. In fact, beagles are bred and used for medical testing due to their docile natures. None of them has a mean bone, and they were not afraid of people or touch; rather, they were unfamiliar with the way a dog is typically touched, and not sure how to react to it at first. They were only ever held in the context of being poked and prodded, not lovingly petted and cooed at. So when they were first pet, they would just kind of freeze! Now, they soak up the attention, and have formed strong bonds with their foster families and their canine foster siblings! Judy is one of these resilient gals! She is 3 years young and has been in foster care with a staff member and her family and has been busy soaking up how to be a dog from her foster dog siblings! While she has made great progress, she still has a ways to go to adapt to life outside of a cage. In her foster home, Judy has been living happily alongside other dogs, a cat, and children! She gets along well with everyone. Having furry and human friends around seems to help her feel safe and supported as she continues to blossom. Judy is also making great progress with her house training and is getting better about doing her business outside. She's learning that walks can be fun, too, and has become noticeably braver on the leash! As her personality emerges, Judy has started discovering the joys of being a dog. Recently, she's taken a particular interest in stuffies and enjoys slowly and methodically "deconstructing" her favorite toys. It's one of the many ways she's begun expressing her playful side. She's even started smiling—a heart-melting grin that perfectly captures how far she's come! Here is what her foster mom had to share about her! "I wasn’t sure how Judy would react at my house, but she has fit in quite well. She enjoys the company of our dogs and children and spending time outside in the yard. She is getting braver each day and has started going up and down stairs and in and outside on her own. She is startled by noises and sudden movements but she is learning she is in a safe space. She has started smiling in the past week and is getting more and more playful with the dogs in the yard. She is making positive progress each day!" If you're looking for a gentle companion and would love the opportunity to help a deserving dog continue her journey, Judy may be the perfect match. Every day she comes a little further out of her shell—and the dog waiting inside is absolutely worth getting to know! Judy’s adoption fee is $375. This animal is spayed, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.

Now, they soak up the attention, and have formed strong bonds with their foster families and their canine foster siblings! Denise is one these resilient gals that we were lucky to welcome to Heartland! She is 3 years young and landed in an amazing foster home with a whole beagle pack! She has made huge strides, but still has a ways to go to fully adapt to life outside of a cage. One of the most exciting changes has been watching Denise discover the joy of being a dog! She has recently started showing interest in stuffies and is beginning to play with her foster dog siblings. She even does zoomies pretty regularly! Seeing her playful side emerge has been incredibly rewarding, and we know there's even more of her personality waiting to shine. Denise is looking for a patient and understanding family that will continue helping her learn the basics. She is still working on housebreaking and learning to walk confidently on a leash, so she'll need adopters who are committed to providing guidance, consistency, and encouragement as she continues to make progress. Here is what her foster mom had to share about her! "Experiencing the world with fresh eyes, every day brings new and wonderful things. Sometimes new things are scary and Denise needs to be shown that they are fun and safe. Mostly though, Denise is loving life and brings good vibes to every situation. Discover, wonder and awe alongside Denise." With time, love, and a little patience, Denise is sure to become a wonderful companion. If you're looking for a gentle, sweet-natured beagle who is ready to continue her journey with a family of her own, Denise may be the perfect match for you! Denise's adoption fee is $375. This animal is spayed, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.

Story
Rowdy is a little shy with new people. Shes great with all dogs she meets and would be best on a home with another dog to help her adjust. Rowdy is curious in new situations, but life up until recently, hasnt been kind to her..... so she will need time to get comfortable and then her true goofy nature will emerge! Like a butterfly, Rowdy is a much different pup than when she 1st came to us from the pound, with no hope of getting out :( UNTIL the rescue chick saw me and knew i was a diamond in the RUFF ;) Rowdy needs a patient home who will give her time to warm up, open up & trust. Older kids only would be best for her and a fully fenced yard is a must. Until she settles in she'll be an escape risk. An apartment would work for Rowdy as well. She is ready for her furever family!! Apply soon! Local adoption only $200, in TX

Markus and Melvin's Facebook Photo Album: https://www.facebook.com/media/set?set=a.1159748329529604&type=3 (copy and paste into your browser). 8-12-2025: The boys have been in doggie day care/ boarding for a couple of weeks are are doing great!! They are warming up to the staff at Tail Gate for Dogs and having a blast playing with all their new friends. We have decided that the boys can move into separate homes but there needs to be a playful dog buddy in their new foster to adopt home. They are doing great with our heartworm slow-kill program and we are hopeful they will be negative by the end of the year. The great part about our program is there is no exercise restriction so they can play and take walks. 7-13-2025: The boys have been in doggie day care/ boarding for a couple of weeks are are doing great!! They are warming up to the staff at Tail Gate for Dogs and having a blast playing with all their new friends. We would love to move them into a foster home, however, with a loving, caring patient family to help them get ready for their forever home. 6-21-2025: Marky and Melvin are youngish Beagle brothers we saved from an over-crowded shelter in Memphis, TN. Sadly both boys have heartworms and both have a grade 2/6 heart murmur that we hope will improve the longer they are in our heartworm slow-kill program. My guess is they are about 2 years old and have not suffered too much kindness from humans as they are timid and a little feral-- but there is hope. They are great with other dogs and cat safe. I have seen them fight with each other, but for the most part, they are a pair. We need a loving, patient foster to help them learn that most people are kind. Marky- the bigger one is a little more open to pets and cuddles. I found that both boys liked hot dogs and food is going to be a huge part of their recovery. We will be doing blood work soon, but I can just about guarantee that they both have at least Lyme disease that may be causing the heart murmurs. We are treating them as if they are infected as part of our heartworm slow-kill protocol anyways. We will also be adding some good supplements to help their heart and bodies heal. If you are interested in fostering, our application is at helpibr.org If you would like to help sponsor their care, we have PayPal at www.illinoisbirddogrescue.org VENMO with @illinoisbirddogrescue and ZELLE with info@illinoisbirddogrescue.org

Emma's Family GOFUNDMEEmma's Family Facebook Page ***DNA NEWS*** I have some of Elliott's results posted at the Emma's Family Facebook page. Wisdom Panel shows that the puppies have several breeds mixed into their genetics. Besides Beagle, of course, there is also Chihuahua, Pomeranian and Toy Fox Terrier which could explain his beautiful tri-color markings on his face. The Pom influence can explain their beautiful soft coats!! Elliot was born on April 7th to the cutest most amazing Beagle we rescued from a shelter in Central, Illinois. We are not sure who the daddy is but we do plan to DNA test when they are 6 weeks old and hope to get an idea. The puppies are doing great, growing like weeks and their mamma Emma is playing with them and their foster mom and friends are handling. They will be confident little pups when it is time for them to move to their new families. We are only looking for Foster to Adopt in the Chicaqo area with safe fenced in yards. As Beagles are very social dogs, it would be ideal if the puppies find homes with other friendly confident dogs. I can go over our Foster to Adopt protocols once an application is in. They should be ready to move to their new families after their first vaccination after June 12th. If you would like to help, please click HERE to submit a foster to adopt home application.
