Story
Sitka is a gorgeous but slightly challenging white husky mix. When he first came into the shelter, he didn't want to be touched at all. Once he was in and out of his kennel a few times he slowly started reacting better, but was still quite the "I am large and in charge" type of guy.?? He arrived as an intact male and doesn't really seem to have had much in the way of manners guidance or training.? once he sort of figures out that the person that is taking care of him is good and providing food and not a threat to him, he becomes much more relaxed. He's still probably going to need someone who is a confident dog handler because he's a smart fellow. He definitely could take advantage of a situation where he feels like he could intimidate someone. He hasn't been tested yet with other dogs but we could certainly do that. He's super food motivated but doesn't respond to any commands. He does show some resource guarding with food; his new family or rescue would need to be prepared for that. We would definitely recommend he go into a home with no children? under teenaged. With the right family and training, we think that this guy will absolutely thrive. If placed in a bad situation and left to make choices on his own, we guarantee he's going to make some bad choices. if you'd like to meet Sitka, please contact the shelter so that we can arrange for his foster mom to bring him in. ??Dogs are generally tested with dogs of their own size; and dog meets with the resident dogs are always encouraged. Shelter cat testing is not very reliable and we always recommend caution when introducing dogs to cats in the home. Recommendation on suitability of placement with children by their ages is based on behavioral observations including energy level and response to body handling. We never recommend leaving young children unsupervised with dogs, and we cannot guarantee the behavior of dogs with children, other pets or cats. Behavior evaluations should be considered as a snapshot of the behavior of the dog at this point in time; HBPAC believes all dog families need to be prepared to invest time and energy into training as well as provide common sense management of their new dog. We always encourage family to do some research on the breeds or mixes of breeds prior to adoption as many can have some unique characteristics that may or may not fit into their families.
