Story
Athena is an energetic girl who loves people and toys. She loves to play ball and tug of war. She needs tough toys as she tends to eat them if they fall apart. Her favorites are tough rubber balls and ropes. Athena also likes to sleep near people and loves belly rubs. Athena needs space to run and lots of love and attention. She can sit and shake for treats (with both paws). She does tend to drool a bit if she is overstimulated or hungry and she will slosh water when she drinks because she likes to stick her face in it! She does tend to be a bit food aggressive so she will growl if people/pets are near her food bowl but she can eat with another dog as long as they aren't right next to her or trying to eat out of her bowl. Athena was raised with lots of people, 5 kids, 4 cats, and another dog around. She will chase cats if they run but she's never hurt one. She even played with one of our more feisty cats. We love Athena but she deserves a better life than we can currently provide.

Story
***Currently located in Troncones, Mexico*** Hi, I’m Griffin! I was born as one of six puppies in a local family in the town of La Salada. Sadly, we were neglected in our first stretch of life, and four of my siblings passed.  A local animal advocate named Jimena spoke with my family and they agreed to give my surviving sibling and me up so we could receive the care we needed. We were rushed to the doggie hospital (the humans call it the “vet”) where I received some treatment for a mild skin issue and parasites.  They also sterilized my mom to ensure she has no more litters that meet the same sad fate as my siblings.  My life has been a whirlwind but I’ve kept my happy-go-lucky attitude through it all! I fall in love with every hooman from the moment I meet them and I enjoy spending time hanging out with the other dogs at the rescue, especially the puppies and playful adults. I know I am officially a teenager but in my heart I will always stay a puppy! With the hoomans I am a very trusting, wear-my-heart-on-my-sleeve kind of guy, and I open up right from the start showering you with face licks and showing you my goofy side! I truly have unlimited love to give out!  The dogs I know are my absolute besties! I could romp around with them all day and would really love a play buddy in my future home as well. I will need a slow intro though, because new dogs frighten me a bit at first. The rescue has done an incredible job with guiding me through new introductions and they will give you all the info you need to! I am working a lot on meeting dogs on the streets as well and have made incredible progress. In the past I used to be quite worried and wasn't sure if the other dog wanted to fight or play, so I prepared myself with stiffening my body, raising the hair on my back and watching the other dog cautiously. I never bark and would't lunge, but might have pulled on the leash. The volunteers are really proud of me, because I learned to focus on them (with treats or the command "Touch") instead of the other dog. I am proud of myself, too I go on hourlong walks with the volunteers and can play all day long with my doggie friends. I am a really happy dog and nothing is going to ever make me lose my positive attitude! According to my current foster momma, I am truly one of a kind. I am a big baby who wants to cuddle a lot and at the same time I am always down for action and adventures. She takes me on hourlong walks with her other dogs and I am so happy to tag along!  I am also great at relaxing and can be really good with down time while my foster momma is working for example. I can get super excited when you're coming home or when food is being prepped or when we go for a walk. I will jump with all four legs simultaneously in the air around my current hooman trying really hard not to bump into her, because you have to be respectful, right? I know how to Sit, Down and Wait, I walk well on leash (the first 2 minutes don't count, do they?), I am crate trained and actually love my crate and I can touch your hand on command with my snout.  My foster momma says I am the happiest, most life loving puppy she has ever met and that I am a really funny dog, that makes everyone laugh, because apparently I can be a bit clumsy. Okay, cut the "a bit". She sometimes calls me "Derp", not sure why, but I guess it's my second name. I love making everyone laugh, that makes for a good mood, so I think I am doing a fantastic job! With that being said, I can’t help but think about my next great adventure: traveling to the U.S. or Canada and emBARKing () on a lifelong journey with a family of my own! To my future family reading this - I love you already! Story
***Currently located in Guerrero, Mexico Hi, I'm Raquel! I'm part of the Money Heist Litter — yep, we’ve got some serious star power in our names! My seven siblings and I were found in a very dangerous area near a busy street. Life was tough, but a kind shop owner had been feeding our brave mama, Lisbon, helping her stay strong until help arrived. Even though Surfers for Strays were already full, they didn’t turn us away. They visited us every day, made sure Mama had enough food, and watched over us until they could create a safe space at the shelter. Thanks to their determination (and a bit of creativity with quarantine space!), we were finally brought to safety. Now, we’re all growing up surrounded by love, care, and plenty of tail wags. When I first arrived, I was timid and unsure. I needed time and patience to understand that I was finally safe. I’m still learning — but every day I grow a little braver. Slow introductions are key with me: I like to watch the situation first, take a breath, and decide at my own pace. Once I'm comfortable, my tail wags like a helicopter and sometimes I can’t help myself and I jump, wiggle, and bark with excitement like you’re the best thing I’ve ever seen. Which you are of course!  I’m a dog who loves balance: Energy when we play Soft quiet time afterward I have playful, goofy bursts of zoomies, and then you’ll find me sprawled on my back, paws in the air, sunbathing like royalty. (It’s my signature position — 10/10 comfort, highly recommend.) Other dogs are my greatest confidence boosters. They help me understand the world better, and I absolutely adore playing with them. Wrestling, chase, silly games — sign me up! Toys are fun sometimes, but nothing compares to a real live dog friend. If I could pick, I’d really love a home with another dog who can show me the ropes. ‍ I’m still learning to trust humans in close contact. I used to have an infection on my face, so sometimes I get a little uncomfortable if people reach there — but belly rubs? YES PLEASE. I’ll roll over dramatically just to ask for them. When I do that, it means I trust you. It’s my way of saying, “Okay… I’m safe with you.”  I already know sit and stay, and I’m smart, treat-motivated, and eager to learn — especially with someone gentle. Walks can feel overwhelming at first, especially with new people or new places, and I may pull or try to move away if I feel scared. But with someone patient, consistent, and kind, I’ll blossom. I also go into my crate calmly — it feels like a safe little den for me, and I’m proud of myself for that. I dream of a family who will give me the space to come out of my shell on my terms. Someone who understands that nervous dogs aren’t broken — we’re just waiting for the right person to help us bloom. Once I love you… I love you forever. And I promise — that moment will be worth the wait. Story
***Currently located in Seattle, WA*** Hi, I’m Brownie! And if you’re looking for a sweet spot in your life, I’m your girl! Like a lot of dogs in Mexico, I spent the first several months of my life out on the street, searching for food, love, and a safe place to rest. I was around seven months old when I was picked up by the rescue. Once I arrived at the shelter, I knew things were finally looking up. Physically, I’m what you might call a slightly untypical Mexi-Mutt. Still gorgeous, of course —but my body’s a little stockier and I am not as long-legged as my fellow shelter mates!  Personality-wise? I’m a total cuddlebug. I absolutely love affection, and I’ll gladly soak up all the love you want to give. But once I’ve had my fill, I’m just as happy to wander off and curl up in my favorite spot—like the bottom shelf of an old bookcase (yes, really!). I’ve got this lovely medium energy that makes me super easy to live with. I can get excited and playful (especially when other dogs are involved!), but I also know how to settle down, relax, and enjoy the moment. You can leave me chilling while you work or do your thing, and when you come back to me, I’ll be so happy you're there again. I love to play and don’t mind a bit of roughhousing—especially with the bigger dogs here. I adjust really well to the dogs around me. I’d do great in a home with other playful pups, but I can also be content with solo adventures and quality time with my human. Some other things about me: I’m crate trained and actually go in willingly when I need to I walk well on leash and love going outside I’m food motivated and eager to learn I’ve got a good amount of confidence for a street pup—just enough to thrive, not too much to cause trouble! Even though I didn’t grow up as a pet, I’ve adjusted fast—and I’m ready to keep learning what it means to be someone’s dog. I’d really love a family that can give me structure, love, and fun… in equal measure. At the end of a long day, I promise: a Brownie is all you need. Story
***Currently located in Guerrero, Mexico*** Hi everyone! My name is Osa, which means bear in Spanish. I am a black lab looking girl and definitely have some bear traits to show off, like silky soft fur, warm eyes and a lot of cup, I mean, pup-energy! I was found on the streets in bad shape and very hungry. On top of the suffering you face when you haven't eaten in days, I also had a bad limp in one of my front legs. Everything was a blur, I cannot remember how that happend, maybe another dog, maybe a car... A kind Mexican woman had mercy on me and brought me to the shelter, where I am still today. For the first time in my life, I experienced what safety means- I had food, water, a warm, dry place to sleep and, the best part, friends! Since then there hasn't been a single day when I went hungry again. My two besties and I play a lot together! We romp around like crazy and may sometimes run over one of the smaller puppers in our excitement (oopsies!). As I grow up, I will try to be more careful (or will I? ). To run and chase my friends is a lot of work and I recently noticed that I have zero pain in my leg- it has healed completely! Thankfully, because I wouldn't wanna miss all the fun!  I also like to get all the attention from the humans. Soft pets and chin rubs are the best! When the volunteers sit down to pet us, I will hang around for quite some time before I get myself a toy to play with. I am very friendly, but sometimes I don't quite know the social etiquette and I would love to have my personal human that can teach me how to properly dog and to be fully compatiable with their family! Learning new things is fun!  Another dog in the home would be cool, but it is not a must for me if I can get a lot of exercise and if we can go on play dates or to the dog park. I love toys, especially ropes and .. actually everything   I cannot wait to meet my future family and go on all the adventures with them! Lots of facelicks, your Osa   If you are interested in FOSTERING, click on the Foster Button and fill out the online Foster Application If you are interested in ADOPTING, click on the Adopt Button and fill out the online Adoption Application Check out our VOLUNTEER Opportunities here https://www.surfersforstrays.org/get-involved  If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us. Story
***Currently located in Guerrero, Mexico*** Hi there! I’m Libby (as in Liberty), a 1.5-year-old girl who’s always up for an adventure. I love to lead the way in playtime—whether I’m running around the beach or chasing my toys, I’m full of energy and excitement! I’m confident and love being the center of attention, but I’m also super affectionate. I really enjoy being close to my humans and will happily accept chin rubs or forehead strokes whenever they’re offered. I’m independent and love exploring, but I always like to check in and make sure everyone’s nearby. I’m a gregarious, fun-loving girl who’s always ready for whatever comes next. I can be a little daring, but I’m also gentle and sweet when I want to be. I’ve been living here at this wonderful foster home by the beach for the past month, and I’ve really been thriving with my brother, Indy, by my side. We play together, nap together, and enjoy each other’s company. It would be wonderful if we could be adopted together, but if you already have a second dog who loves to play, I’d be just as happy to have a new playmate to share my adventures with. If you’re looking for a playful, loving companion who will fill your life with joy, I’m your girl! I promise to bring a lot of fun and love to your home.
