Story
Athena is an energetic girl who loves people and toys. She loves to play ball and tug of war. She needs tough toys as she tends to eat them if they fall apart. Her favorites are tough rubber balls and ropes. Athena also likes to sleep near people and loves belly rubs. Athena needs space to run and lots of love and attention. She can sit and shake for treats (with both paws). She does tend to drool a bit if she is overstimulated or hungry and she will slosh water when she drinks because she likes to stick her face in it! She does tend to be a bit food aggressive so she will growl if people/pets are near her food bowl but she can eat with another dog as long as they aren't right next to her or trying to eat out of her bowl. Athena was raised with lots of people, 5 kids, 4 cats, and another dog around. She will chase cats if they run but she's never hurt one. She even played with one of our more feisty cats. We love Athena but she deserves a better life than we can currently provide.

Story
***Currently located in Guerrero, Mexico*** Hello  My name is Briella and I am part of the B-Litter with my sister and my two brothers. When we were born, there were 8 of us and the family that my mom chose to care for us, was super nice, but they couldn't keep us all. So, we came to the shelter in the big city!  I need to admit, that for me everything was very hard. So many new smells, new people and new dogs! I was always very cautious about the humans. After spending over a year at the shelter in Zihuatanejo I have learned that humans definitely can be trusted. They are in fact very nice and are always happy to give me a gentle pet on the head or scratch my chin (favorite spot!! ) It will take me only a few moments to warm up to women, but I will need a bit more time with men. When I trust you, I give you my heart and all my love. I am very submissive and try to please you as well as I can! I will follow you around everywhere you go and when you stop and notice me and give me some cuddles, I am the happiest girl in the world! In the shelter we sleep in crates at night and I am totally fine with that. The other dogs are actually quite cool and I enjoy playing with them! I am very submissive and no dog has ever gotten into a fight with me - even though we had quite a few rowdies since I am here! - because I will just roll under them and show a lot of puppy behvaiour, so they know I am not a threat! Cats don't really bother me, they are just chilling and I am not afraid of them, which makes me think, I am very courageous! I am curious about new things, I will not hide, I am usually inspecting the new situation from a little distance. I really would love to have a home, with patient and calm people, that already have dog experience. Being part of a family is my biggest dream!  Another dog would also be great for me to learn from him/her and to give me confidence!  Hope to hear from you! Story
***Currently located in Guerrero, Mexico*** Hi, I’m Jack — though I was once called Ken - from the Barbie Litter! My story began in a broken-down shack on the coast of Mexico, where I was born to a brave, feral mama. The ground was littered with nails and broken glass — and food was scarce. Life was tough, and sadly, not all of my siblings made it. But then a kind woman spotted us and called Surfers for Strays, and everything began to change. Volunteers came to visit us at the shack every single day — bringing food, clean water, medicine, and so much love. They built us a safe pen, cared for our mama, and made sure we knew what kindness felt like. I couldn’t help but love them back. Once there was space at the shelter, I moved in and got to live with the volunteers themselves. That’s when life truly began to blossom. I made new four-legged friends , learned basic training, and discovered how good it feels to be safe, clean, and surrounded by love. Eventually, I was adopted and flew to the U.S. — full of hope for my forever home. But sometimes forever turns out to be temporary. I was diagnosed with hip dysplasia, and my adoptive family couldn’t commit to managing it. So, I made the journey back to Mexico. Surfers for Strays never gave up on me. They drove me 16 hours to Toluca for a promising stem cell treatment — and it worked for almost a year! I was thriving, pain-free, and feeling like my best self. But in summer 2025, the pain came back and after reviewing the x-rays the team decided to move forward with a Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO) — a surgery that promises me a pain-free life, aside from the usual risk of arthritis in old age. Since then, I’ve been back to doing everything I love. Gladly reach out to Surfers for Strays for more info, as I am not a dogtor. These days, I live at the volunteer house, and let me tell you — it’s the good life.  I sleep in bed with the humans (cuddles are non-negotiable), go on long daily walks, and spend my days surrounded by my doggo friends. I’ve earned the nickname “Sweet Uncle Jack” because I love playing with all the pups. I’m patient, kind, and know how to set soft, healthy boundaries. I’m incredibly affectionate with people — I don’t jump up, but if you kneel down, I’ll nuzzle right in for pets and kisses. I need to be touching you when I sleep or while you're working — even in the Mexican heat, cuddling is my #1 priority. I’m also crate-trained, housebroken, and polite around food. I know my commands (Sit, Down, Paw, Turn, Stay), and while I’m not super food-driven, I do love working with you to learn and please. One of my favorite pastimes is sniffing — walks with sniff breaks or a snuffle mat at home would make my day! My energy is just right — I enjoy my walks and playtime, but I’m also perfectly content to lounge by your side. I’d love a home with another friendly dog, but I’d also be happy with regular playdates and plenty of cuddle time with my humans. I’m just a really, really good boy. I’ve been through a lot, but I hold no grudges. I choose joy, every day. My heart is full — it just needs a place to land. Could you be the one to give me my true forever? With all the love (and face licks) in the world,Your Jack     If you'd like to Foster, click on the Foster Button and complete the online Foster Application. Story
***Currently located in Guerrero, Mexico*** Hi, I’m Montana A little shy at first… but give me a moment, and I’ll be your most loyal lovebug. I used to be what people call “a hard-to-catch street dog.” For months, kind rescuers tried to approach me, but I wasn’t ready to trust anyone. I was dealing with a painful case of mange, and in a well-meaning but very harmful attempt to help, someone poured motor oil on me. Under the hot sun, it burned my skin terribly. I was in agony and didn’t know how to ask for help — until one day, a group of real-life angels finally earned my trust and brought me to safety. They rushed me to the vet, treated my injuries, and gave me the care I had never known before. Now, you’d barely recognize me! My fur has grown back beautifully, my body has healed, and more importantly — so has my spirit. I’ve blossomed into a happy, silly, affectionate girl who is full of life and love. I still have a slight limp from an old injury on my front paw, but it doesn’t slow me down one bit. I run, wrestle, and play with my fellow shelter mates like crazy — all by choice! It doesn't seem to bother me, but I probably wouldn’t make a great jogging partner. I’d do better with someone who enjoys hikes and yard play, not repetitive high-impact exercise. When visitors come into the shelter, I like to observe from a distance and let the other dogs know that something suspicious is happening. Strangely, they ignore my warnings and run up full speed to the intruders, welcoming them with jumps and kisses! Never seen such bad survival skills before, but okay. Live and let die. I mean, let live. Don’t mind me standing there, just checking out the situation. It doesn’t take me long to be convinced that if the other dogs are happy, I might be too. That’s when I trot over to take a closer look. I’ll give the intruder a few sniffs (but don’t you dare look me in the eyes just yet — I’ll walk off again, barking offendedly). But if you stay calm and gentle, you’ll get your first face lick very quickly. I love handing out face licks! I’m really good at it — gentle, not pushy, just a sweet way to say “Hi, I like you.” Soon I’ll be melting into your hands for chin scratches. With just a little patience, I turn into a total lovebug — the kind who follows your every step and snuggles up next to you at every chance. I just need to feel safe, and then I’m all in. I love playing with other dogs, and I get along with just about everyone — especially other playful pups who enjoy a good wrestle match! I can get excited during play and may need a little break now and then to wind down, depending on my playmates’ energy. But I also enjoy gentler play with calmer dogs, and I’m great at adjusting my style. I even get along beautifully with the shelter owner’s 7-year-old daughter — but since I startle easily and need slower intros, I’m looking for a home without young kids. I’m crate trained, and it’s become my little safe space. I haven’t shown any guarding behavior with toys or people, and I’m respectful at mealtimes. I may chase a cat if the other dogs do it first, so we’re not totally sure how I’d be with feline friends. If there’s another dog in the home, I’d love a buddy who’s confident but not too dominant — someone who can help me keep building trust and joy in this new life. What I really need is a home that can give me a bit of time and patience in the beginning. I’ve come such a long way already, and I know I’ll thrive in a home that understands my journey and sees the bright, loving pup I am today. I might not be your “brewery dog” or the life of the party, but if you're looking for a loyal companion to hike with, hang with, and love deeply — I just might be your girl.
