Story
Six years young, sweet as can be, and ready to sniff out her happily-ever-after! Meet Alice, a lovely 6-year-old Lab/Shepherd cross who has been quietly winning hearts since arriving at the shelter. Alice came to us as an unclaimed stray, and while we may not know much about her past, she's showing us every day what a wonderful girl she is. From day one, Alice has been a calm, friendly, and well-mannered presence in the shelter. She's one of the quieter dogs in her kennel room and has been doing a fantastic job keeping her space clean — a pretty impressive résumé for a girl waiting patiently for her forever family! Alice is a friendly lady who seems happy to say hello to just about everyone she meets. She's got a lovely temperament and demeanor, and there's an easygoing quality about her that makes her a pleasure to spend time with. But don't let that calm exterior fool you — Alice has a nose! Put her somewhere new and suddenly the world becomes one giant mystery to investigate. Every interesting scent deserves a sniff, every new path deserves to be explored, and every bush may be hiding something extremely important. She may even have a little hound dog hiding somewhere in her family tree! Because Alice loves following her nose, daily walks will be an important part of her new life. Even better? Take her somewhere different from time to time. New neighbourhoods, trails, and paths will give her plenty of interesting smells and sights to investigate while keeping her mind engaged. Alice seems to be a smart and food-motivated girl, which makes us think training could be a lot of fun for everyone involved. We'd love to see Alice's new family start things off on the right paw with obedience classes. Not only will training help establish expectations and good habits from the beginning, but it can also be a wonderful way for Alice and her people to build trust, communication, and a strong bond. And when treats are involved? Well, Alice is likely to be a very enthusiastic student. Alice may do well living with another well-mannered, compatible dog, provided introductions are done thoughtfully and correctly. As with any new canine friendship, proper introductions and close supervision throughout the adjustment period will be important to make sure everyone is comfortable and the relationship develops at its own pace. Alice has tested positive for Lyme disease, but fortunately, she does not have an active infection or current illness. This means she may simply have been exposed to the bacteria in the past; however, she may benefit from a little extra care and monitoring for any signs or symptoms of Lyme disease. And then there's one final thing you should know about Alice... THE EARS. We're not sure exactly how those adorable ears came to be, but we're pretty sure they're going to be impossible to resist. Alice has already shown us that she's a sweet, friendly girl with a wonderful temperament. Now she just needs someone to show her that being found as an unclaimed stray doesn't have to be the end of her story. It can be the beginning. Alice is ready to trade her kennel for a couch, shelter walks for family adventures, and being someone's unclaimed stray for being someone's very much-loved dog. If you're looking for a smart, friendly girl with an excellent nose, an adventurous spirit, and the most adorable ears, Alice would love to meet you. Story
Blue is a five-year-old Husky who has come an incredible way since arriving in our care and now he's ready to find the people who will love him for the big, sweet, sometimes vocal boy he is. When Blue first came to us as an unclaimed stray, he was carrying a little too much weight and was understandably nervous about some of the things happening around him. During his initial triage, invasive handling and people standing over him made him uncomfortable. He also had an unfortunate altercation with a much smaller dog while he was loose and running excitedly toward the dog. The other dog sustained one small puncture wound. But Blue has shown us again and again that one difficult moment does not define him. Over the months, Blue has blossomed. He has shed some pounds, gained confidence, and let his wonderfully sweet personality shine through. He is friendly with everyone he has met and has become a favourite among our dog walkers and staff. Blue is a great leash walker and can be comfortably walked by volunteers at a Level 3. His walkers have described him as: Very food motivated, walked well, love this big guy. And: Really coming out of his shell, walks very well on leash, loves to be brushed and loves treats and takes them nicely. Blue is a big fan of treats and takes them nicely, and if there is one thing he might love almost as much as snacks, its being brushed! He absolutely enjoys it. He also loves getting pets and is now comfortable with staff standing over him — a huge improvement from when he first arrived. Blue has also made wonderful progress with handling. While he still prefers that his front legs not be handled excessively, he communicates this appropriately by simply pulling his leg away. Otherwise, he has demonstrated that he can be very comfortable with routine handling, including having his paws squeezed, his mouth touched, and hands run along his body. Because of his sensitivity around his front leg, his back leg is recommended for blood draws. And what about other dogs? We believe Blues original incident with the smaller dog was situational rather than representative of his overall behaviour with dogs. He was a large dog loose and excitedly approaching a much smaller dog, and we have seen a very different picture of him in controlled settings. Blue is regularly rotated with smaller dogs in the pen without issue. On one occasion, he was barking at a smaller dog, but when the other dog barked back, Blue immediately jumped back and stopped barking — a pretty good reminder that this big guy can be a little unsure of himself, too! More recently, Blue met a friendly female dog who was slightly smaller than him. He was very interested in sniffing her, and after their initial greetings, the two were able to walk side by side with relaxed bodies and open mouths. Blue is also starting to show more of his Husky personality as he becomes comfortable. He can be a little vocal, he is food motivated, and he has a sweet, charming presence that makes it very easy to fall for him. What kind of home is Blue looking for? Blue would love a home where his people will continue to build on all the progress he has made and appreciate him for the big, lovable Husky that he is. We recommend no other small dogs in the home and, because of his size and history, we do not recommend a home with small children. For the right family, Blue has so much to offer. He has already worked incredibly hard to come out of his shell, and now he deserves the chance to continue that journey in a home of his own. If you're looking for a big-hearted Husky who loves walks, treats, attention and a good brushing session, Blue might just be your guy. Story
Sadie is an adorable one-year-old Bully mix with a heart full of love and a zest for life! She arrived at the shelter as a stray and, sadly, was never reclaimed. While her past is a mystery, she's ready to leave it behind and start her next chapter with a family of her own. When Sadie first arrived, she was understandably nervous in the shelter environment. It didn't take long for her sweet personality to shine through, though! Once she gets to know you, she'll greet you with an enthusiastic full-body wag and plenty of affection. She loves spending time with people she trusts and is eager to make new friends. As a young dog, Sadie is full of energy and still has plenty of puppy-like enthusiasm. She can be bouncy, jumps up when she's excited, and pulls on the leash, so she'll benefit from continued obedience training to help her become the best companion she can be. The good news? Sadie is highly motivated by both food and toys, making training a fun and rewarding experience for both her and her new family. Sadie will thrive in an active home that can provide her with plenty of daily exercise, enrichment, and mental stimulation. She's an affectionate, social girl, but she's also a busy body who will do best with structure, routine, and clear guidance. With consistency and patience, she's sure to blossom into an amazing lifelong companion. Sadie may enjoy having a confident, high-energy canine companion who can match her playful spirit and help burn off some of that youthful energy. Due to her jumpy nature and unknown history, a home without small children is recommended. If you're looking for a fun-loving, affectionate young dog who's ready to learn and eager to share her love, Sadie might just be the perfect match. With a little training, plenty of exercise, and a family committed to helping her succeed, Sadie is sure to become a loyal and loving best friend. Please complete an adoption request: https://www.hamilton.ca/home-neighbourhood/animals-pets/adopt-or-foster-pet/adoptions Sadie has a future appointment to be spayed. Story
Koda is a handsome, approximately four-year-old Great Pyrenees/Australian Shepherd mix who came to us as an unclaimed stray. When he first arrived, this big boy was understandably nervous and unsure of his new surroundings. But with a little time, patience, and some familiar faces, Koda has really started to come out of his shell! These days, Koda is much more comfortable and is happily enjoying the food and attention offered to him. One of the best ways to see his sweet personality is to watch him greet a familiar staff member. As soon as someone he knows walks into his kennel, Koda pops right up with a big, happy tail wag and bright, eager eyes. As he has become more comfortable with staff, Koda has proven himself to be a pleasant, calm, and easy-going dog who is enjoyable to handle. He also appears to genuinely enjoy the company of other dogs and has shown appropriate behaviour during his interactions with them. With proper introductions, we believe Koda could potentially live happily with another dog. Koda's Great Pyrenees and Australian Shepherd heritage means he comes from two working breeds. He will thrive in a home that understands the importance of providing daily physical exercise as well as plenty of mental stimulation. He would love a family who can give him opportunities to explore, learn, and use his clever mind. He's also much happier when he's outside, where he can stretch his legs and take in the world around him. Because of his calm and gentle temperament, we believe Koda could potentially live with dog-savvy children who understand how to respectfully interact with a large dog. Koda may have started his journey with us as a nervous stray, but he's showing us more of his wonderful personality every day. He's a sweet, easy-going guy who is looking for a patient family willing to give him the time, guidance, exercise, and love he deserves. If you're looking for a big-hearted companion with a big wag and an even bigger personality, Koda might just be your guy! Please complete an adoption request: https://www.hamilton.ca/home-neighbourhood/animals-pets/adopt-or-foster-pet/adoptions Koda has an appointment to be neutered on September 3rd. He is looking for a foster-to-adopt home between now and his surgery. Animal adoptions and viewing are by appointment only. Story
Looking for a dog who will keep you smiling, keep you moving, and make sure everyone knows when someone's at the door? Meet Fez! This handsome 1-year-old American Eskimo cross arrived at the shelter as an unclaimed stray and is more than ready to trade shelter life for a family of his own. While his first week with us included a case of stress-related tummy troubles, he's feeling much better now and is back to being the happy, energetic pup we knew was hiding underneath. Fez is a social butterfly who loves meeting new people and happily soaks up all the attention he can get. He's affectionate, friendly, and always excited to be part of the action. At just a year old, he's still learning his manners and has all the enthusiasm you'd expect from a young dog! This little guy is definitely small but mighty. Walks with Fez are currently more of an adventure than a stroll - he pulls enthusiastically and likes to zig-zag his way through the world. Because of this, he'll benefit greatly from positive reinforcement obedience classes to help him develop leash skills, polite manners, and appropriate social skills around both people and other dogs. Fez is an active, intelligent boy who needs more than just a quick walk around the block. Daily exercise, training sessions, enrichment toys, and opportunities to use his brain will help him grow into the wonderful companion we know he can be. One thing you should know about Fez... he has a lot to say! He's quite vocal, and his bark is impressively loud for such a little dog. For that reason, he'd be happiest in a detached home, where he won't have close neighbours sharing his conversations. Fez is bursting with personality, affection, and potential. With a little guidance, consistent training, and an active family to keep up with him, this spirited little guy is sure to become an amazing lifelong companion. If you're ready for a fun-loving best friend who will keep life interesting, Fez is waiting to meet you! Story
At approximately 1 to 2 years old, Livvy is a lovable bully mix who arrived as an unclaimed stray and is now searching for a family of her very own. While we don't know much about her past, we do know that her future is looking bright! Livvy is a medium-energy girl who keeps her kennel tidy, loves meeting new people, and firmly believes that every stranger is just a friend she hasn't greeted yet. She's already mastered "sit" and is currently expanding her resume with "paw" and "stay." Like many young professionals, she's eager to learn and highly motivated by snacks. Speaking of snacks, Livvy would happily like you to know that she considers food a love language. Treats, puzzles, food searches, lick mats, and sniffing games are all excellent ways to keep her busy. As a smart bully mix, she thrives when her brain gets as much exercise as her body. On walks, Livvy approaches life with enthusiasm. If she catches an interesting scent, she may temporarily forget she's attached to a human and begin following her nose with great determination. Loose-leash walking is definitely on her "to-do" list, and she'd benefit greatly from continued training and consistency. When meeting another dog, Livvy can make quite the entrance. Think excited party guest rather than rude neighbour. After the initial excitement, she settled nicely and was content to coexist and investigate the world around her. Because she's still learning social skills, she would likely do best as an only dog or with a carefully matched canine companion who doesn't mind helping a young dog figure things out. Livvy also has a habit of expressing her affection vertically. If she's excited to see you, she may attempt to become your personal lap dog despite being considerably larger than a lap. Older, dog-savvy children may be a good fit, but supervision is important, and she'd benefit from continuing to work on her manners. At the end of the day, Livvy is exactly what many people are looking for: friendly, affectionate, eager to learn, and ready to build a strong bond with her family. She has all the ingredients to become an amazing companionshe just needs someone willing to invest a little time, patience, and training. If you're looking for a dog who will make you laugh, keep you active, and love you with her whole heart, Livvy is ready to leave shelter life behind and start her next adventure with you. Please complete an adoption application: Bonus Livvy fact: she currently believes every smell within a 3-kilometre radius deserves immediate investigation. Training may convince her otherwise. Maybe. https://www.hamilton.ca/home-neighbourhood/animals-pets/adopt-or-foster-pet/adoptions Animal adoptions and viewing are by appointment only.
