Story
Bullfrog is a special kind of dog. Think of him as a cat in the form of a dog...a big dog. He is going to need a special kind of person who is going to give him space and allow Bullfrog to just be...well, Bullfrog. If you have ever known a cat, you will understand what we mean by this. Bullfrog was picked up as a stray on the southside and taken in by a humane organization that tried their best to find him a home. He had been there a while (eight months) and so they reached out to us, thinking that a change in scenery may do him some good. In the time that he has been with us we discovered that his teeth were a mess (he had to have 8 of them pulled). He has a degenerative condition in his neck. He does not like having his neck touched. Bullfrog does well in playgroup with the other dogs and is excellent about letting us know when he is in the mood for human company - or he if would rather just hang out on his bed. If you are looking for a hiking buddy, snuggle bug, or a dog that you can wrestle with - that is not Bullfrog. If you are looking for a dog that would make a great companion for another laid back dog, we hope that you might consider Bullfrog. If you looking for a very intelligent dog that needs his space, we encourage you to come meet Bullfrog.Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Hope to see you soon!PLEASE NOTE: Animal Aid Society observes a 40 mile adoption radius to facilitate post adoption support and follow ups.

Story
On August 8th, Max will hit a milestone no one wanted to reach: TWO YEARS at Animal Aid Society. Before that? He was in another shelter. And before that? Prison, part of a dog/prisoner rehabilitation program (Just to clarify: Max has no criminal record. Unless you count stealing hearts.)Max is a 67-pound orange enigma: short-haired, sturdy, with impossibly tender eyes that make you want to wrap him in a blanket and rethink your boundaries. We’re not sure what Max is a mix of (Lab? Hound? Traffic Cone?), but if you stop by to meet him, we’d love to hear your guess.Max was adopted once, for a month, and he gave it everything he had. But the home was too much for our sensitive boy: kids, another dog, constant motion - Max doesn’t do well with whirlwinds. He shut down. He came back. And he’s been waiting ever since. But the dog who returned then - skittish, overwhelmed, unsure - isn’t the Max you’ll meet today.A kind, talented trainer worked with our volunteers and together, they've helped him swap panic for trust. Slowly, the real Max emerged. At his core, Max is a world-class snuggler... a lap-seeking, blanket-burrowing, ballad-loving marshmallow who wants nothing more than to curl up against your side and snooze while you sing very off-key. (Favorites include Blackbird and Rainbow Connection. His taste is impeccable. His standards are forgiving.)One time, Max flushed a baby bunny from the woods. Big dog, tiny creature... everyone braced for the worst. But Max? He gave the gentlest “let’s play” bark, booped the bunny softly on the head, and then sat beside it like an encouraging big brother. When the bunny mustered the courage to flee, Max just watched him go - no chase, no fuss. Just good manners and a curious heart. And while Max enjoys the woods, a good romp, and the occasional lure course run, his true happy place? It's curled up beside you, being the little spoon. He’s a homebody at heart - soft, affectionate, and deeply content when he knows you're near. He’d thrive as your only pet in a peaceful, adult household - somewhere calm and steady, where love shows up in quiet ways. Someone kind enough to help him through the things that still worry him (like baby strollers and surprise bicycles), and wise enough to know that the best adventures sometimes happen on the couch. Here’s what Max is looking for:***A calm, patient human or pair of adult humans.***A low-traffic household.***Gentle reminders that the world is safe now: He’s made amazing progress, and he’s ready for more. We’ll even help cover the cost of working with a fantastic, force-free trainer - someone Max already trusts.Max is neutered, vaccinated, healthy, and about seven years young. And he’s ready.Ready to trust.Ready to love.Ready to go home.Come meet Max at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton. We’re open every day from 9am to noon, even on weekends and holidays.Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Hope to see you soon!PLEASE NOTE: Animal Aid Society observes a 40 mile adoption radius to facilitate post adoption support and follow ups.

Story
Tanner is a senior Retriever mix with a gentle way about him. He moves slowly and deliberately, except for his tail, which seems determined to express every positive emotion he’s ever had. There’s a softness in his face and a warmth in his golden eyes that hint at both what he’s been through and what he’s still hoping for. When Tanner came to us after his person passed away, he was in rough shape. Thin, exhausted, and so anemic from fleas, even a bath would have overwhelmed his system. Those first days, he spent most of his time curled up in his little apartment, watching us with the weary caution of a dog who wasn’t sure what came next.So we kept things simple. Good food. Supplements. Soft beds. A lot of calm, no-pressure kindness. Slowly he realized the world wasn’t trying to knock him down anymore. His coat brightened. His energy returned. And one day he walked outside with surprising confidence, tail spinning like it had been waiting for its moment to shine. These days he enjoys the basics: a quiet walk, a soft place to nap, and anyone willing to offer a slow back scratch. He leans in with his full weight, which is flattering right up until you remember how solid fifty pounds can be. Pull out a cookie and he looks like a child seeing magic for the first time.Tanner isn’t dramatic, and he isn’t trying to reinvent himself. He’s simply a sweet, steady, grateful dog who appreciates the small, good things. If you like peaceful mornings, soft snoring, and a companion whose loyalty arrives without fanfare, you’ll understand him immediately.TANNER IS IN FOSTER -- PLEASE CALL THE SHELTER TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO MEET HIM!Interested? Story
Belle is young and beautiful - but, she is also so much more. She is a helper dog - at just 7-months old, she is already helping other dogs adjust to life at the Shelter.Sadly, this perfect puppy has been at the Shelter for over 60 days. And that's never ideal for puppies. When Cinnamon, another 7-month-old puppy, arrived recently, she was terrified of Shelter life. She had no idea what to make of it.Once she was introduced to Belle, she started gaining confidence and relaxing - two must-have qualities to make the most of Shelter life. But it was Belle trying to help socialize her and trying to show her how much fun "playtime" can be that led to Cinnamon's smile. When Belle plays with her brother, Cash, who is also at the Shelter, it is a bit wilder and sometimes a bit much. But that can happen with young siblings. And that's why it was so great to see her being so kind and gracious to Cinnamon.Belle is the perfect size at just 30 pounds and she enjoys other dogs, cats and older children! She seems to have a perpetual smile on her face, which only adds to her puppy charm. If you want to add some youthful and zestful energy to your family, please come meet Belle! You will instantly see why she could be the Belle of any Ball!Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road in Hampton. Open daily between 9AM and noon including weekends and holidays!Interested? Story
Apollo's been here so long he could probably give tours.Stand still for three seconds and he’ll lean into you like he’s about to explain the layout, the snack situation, and possibly your life choices. Here's the part that makes no sense:Apollo is not a project dog. He's the dog people say they want -- crate trained, house trained, polite, non-destructive. If dogs had performance reviews, he’d be quietly ruining the curve. And yet… he's still here.Apollo’s “issue,” if we’re being honest, is that he loves like it’s a full-time job.He leans with purpose, rejects "personal space" on principle, hugs, flips belly-up, gently places his paws on you like, “Quick question -- may I become your entire support system?”And it works -- you forget what you were doing and accept your new role as “person being gently held hostage by a very affectionate hound.”He’s not clingy, though; he’s secure. When you leave, he settles calmly into his crate or favorite spot and waits like a reasonable adult.Apollo is a healthy, neutered, 3-year-old hound mix -- about 40 pounds of soft ears and sincerity. We know him well because he’s been adopted and returned twice -- not because he failed, but because we learned what he needs.Very young kids make him uneasy (not aggressive, just overwhelmed), so no children under 5. And while he’s dog-friendly out in the world, he prefers to be your one and only at home. That’s it. That’s the entire “catch.”So again -- how has he been here this long?If you enjoy being loved with full commitment, come meet Apollo.Animal Aid Society is located at 80 Butler Farm Road in Hampton, VA. Story
Maple did not want to wear the jacket. Not because it looked bad -- this gorgeous, seven-year-old Boxer mix could make a trash bag look like Paris Fashion Week -- but because she simply was not in the mood to participate in outerwear.Unfortunately, Maple is still underweight. And it was cold. So the jacket was non-negotiable.Maple’s response was strategic:If she covered my face with enough kisses, surely I wouldn’t be able to see well enough to put it on. Or snap the snaps. This jacket had snaps, people. A long row of snaps on the belly part. Who designs a dog jacket with snaps?! That’s not a jacket, that’s a relationship test.My neck, chin, mouth, nose, eyes, inner ears... all thoroughly kissed.Once the jacket was finally on, Maple forgave me instantly. No grudge. No drama. Just resumed kissing like nothing had happened, like I hadn't just spent 15 minutes underneath her trying to close a row of snaps. Because that’s who Maple is -- she negotiates with affection and assumes everyone is doing their best.Maple is one of those dogs who reads people better than most humans. She knows when you’re tired, when you need a quiet moment, when you need encouragement... and she knows when the situation calls for a court jester. True to her Boxer lineage, this girl has bounce!Maple's had a rough road. She lost her home through no fault of her own, arrived too thin, and is still working on filling out. But she’s making real progress. She’s eating well and gaining weight. When you sit with her, she settles in like she’s been waiting for you specifically. You can’t help but imagine her ideal life: a couch, a person who comes back every time... and absolutely no jackets with snaps.Come meet Maple at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA. Visiting hours are daily from 9am to noon, including weekends and holidays.Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm.
