Story
Let me introduce the playful energetic Cuddles. She is a poodle and shitzu mix. I adopted her from the aspca in 2015. Cuddles is now 10 but still acts like a puppy 🤗. She got her name because she loves to be cuddled and jumps on you to getsome love. She gets very excited to see you when you come home. I have another dog in the home, and my husband recently had a stroke. At this time, I am just not able to give Cuddles the attention that she needs and keep up the bills and two dogs. Cuddles love children and has gotten a long with a cat previously in the past. I am seeking anyone who can give my cuddles attention and a loving home. I am in an apartment and Cuddles can be a bit barky when hearing people walking pass by the door. She is up to date on her Rabies, Bordetella and DHPP. She has also recieved a shot for allergies. If you need company or your children would like to spread their love to Cuddles please reach out. Looking for a family to have not only fun but love on her💕.

Story
I rescued Maizie from a local shelter. She had been there for more than two months. She was so happy to leave that place. She’s young and has a lot of energy and didn’t appear to have any training. I’ve been working with her and she has made a lot of improvements. She is very sweet and wants to snuggle and be with her human. One of my dogs is big and playful and that has created stress for Maizie. She is protective of toys/chews but has shown improvement in that area. She is a jumper and counter surfer. She has really improved, but you have to correct her. She is finally responding to that. One of the big issues is she can climb my chain linked fence. She runs around the neighborhood, but then returns in her own time. I have been using an e-collar to correct. I have a memory foam bed, e collar and toys for her.

Story
Bullfrog is a special kind of dog. Think of him as a cat in the form of a dog...a big dog. He is going to need a special kind of person who is going to give him space and allow Bullfrog to just be...well, Bullfrog. If you have ever known a cat, you will understand what we mean by this. Bullfrog was picked up as a stray on the southside and taken in by a humane organization that tried their best to find him a home. He had been there a while (eight months) and so they reached out to us, thinking that a change in scenery may do him some good. In the time that he has been with us we discovered that his teeth were a mess (he had to have 8 of them pulled). He has a degenerative condition in his neck. He does not like having his neck touched. Bullfrog does well in playgroup with the other dogs and is excellent about letting us know when he is in the mood for human company - or he if would rather just hang out on his bed. If you are looking for a hiking buddy, snuggle bug, or a dog that you can wrestle with - that is not Bullfrog. If you are looking for a dog that would make a great companion for another laid back dog, we hope that you might consider Bullfrog. If you looking for a very intelligent dog that needs his space, we encourage you to come meet Bullfrog.Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Hope to see you soon!PLEASE NOTE: Animal Aid Society observes a 40 mile adoption radius to facilitate post adoption support and follow ups.

Story
On August 8th, Max will hit a milestone no one wanted to reach: TWO YEARS at Animal Aid Society. Before that? He was in another shelter. And before that? Prison, part of a dog/prisoner rehabilitation program (Just to clarify: Max has no criminal record. Unless you count stealing hearts.)Max is a 67-pound orange enigma: short-haired, sturdy, with impossibly tender eyes that make you want to wrap him in a blanket and rethink your boundaries. We’re not sure what Max is a mix of (Lab? Hound? Traffic Cone?), but if you stop by to meet him, we’d love to hear your guess.Max was adopted once, for a month, and he gave it everything he had. But the home was too much for our sensitive boy: kids, another dog, constant motion - Max doesn’t do well with whirlwinds. He shut down. He came back. And he’s been waiting ever since. But the dog who returned then - skittish, overwhelmed, unsure - isn’t the Max you’ll meet today.A kind, talented trainer worked with our volunteers and together, they've helped him swap panic for trust. Slowly, the real Max emerged. At his core, Max is a world-class snuggler... a lap-seeking, blanket-burrowing, ballad-loving marshmallow who wants nothing more than to curl up against your side and snooze while you sing very off-key. (Favorites include Blackbird and Rainbow Connection. His taste is impeccable. His standards are forgiving.)One time, Max flushed a baby bunny from the woods. Big dog, tiny creature... everyone braced for the worst. But Max? He gave the gentlest “let’s play” bark, booped the bunny softly on the head, and then sat beside it like an encouraging big brother. When the bunny mustered the courage to flee, Max just watched him go - no chase, no fuss. Just good manners and a curious heart. And while Max enjoys the woods, a good romp, and the occasional lure course run, his true happy place? It's curled up beside you, being the little spoon. He’s a homebody at heart - soft, affectionate, and deeply content when he knows you're near. He’d thrive as your only pet in a peaceful, adult household - somewhere calm and steady, where love shows up in quiet ways. Someone kind enough to help him through the things that still worry him (like baby strollers and surprise bicycles), and wise enough to know that the best adventures sometimes happen on the couch. Here’s what Max is looking for:***A calm, patient human or pair of adult humans.***A low-traffic household.***Gentle reminders that the world is safe now: He’s made amazing progress, and he’s ready for more. We’ll even help cover the cost of working with a fantastic, force-free trainer - someone Max already trusts.Max is neutered, vaccinated, healthy, and about seven years young. And he’s ready.Ready to trust.Ready to love.Ready to go home.Come meet Max at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton. We’re open every day from 9am to noon, even on weekends and holidays.Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Story
Tanner is a senior Retriever mix with a gentle way about him. He moves slowly and deliberately, except for his tail, which seems determined to express every positive emotion he’s ever had. There’s a softness in his face and a warmth in his golden eyes that hint at both what he’s been through and what he’s still hoping for. When Tanner came to us after his person passed away, he was in rough shape. Thin, exhausted, and so anemic from fleas, even a bath would have overwhelmed his system. Those first days, he spent most of his time curled up in his little apartment, watching us with the weary caution of a dog who wasn’t sure what came next.So we kept things simple. Good food. Supplements. Soft beds. A lot of calm, no-pressure kindness. Slowly he realized the world wasn’t trying to knock him down anymore. His coat brightened. His energy returned. And one day he walked outside with surprising confidence, tail spinning like it had been waiting for its moment to shine. These days he enjoys the basics: a quiet walk, a soft place to nap, and anyone willing to offer a slow back scratch. He leans in with his full weight, which is flattering right up until you remember how solid fifty pounds can be. Pull out a cookie and he looks like a child seeing magic for the first time.Tanner isn’t dramatic, and he isn’t trying to reinvent himself. He’s simply a sweet, steady, grateful dog who appreciates the small, good things. If you like peaceful mornings, soft snoring, and a companion whose loyalty arrives without fanfare, you’ll understand him immediately.TANNER IS IN FOSTER -- PLEASE CALL THE SHELTER TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO MEET HIM!Interested? Story
Some dogs arrive like open books. Others arrive like locked diaries, daring the world to prove it deserves the key.Leo is the second kind.Leo is a 6-year-old Pomeranian-Poodle mix who came to us after losing the only life he knew. He had lived with children, liked car rides, and understood how a house works and how to be a very good boy inside one. Then one day the map changed, and he found himself in a kennel, listening to strange sounds, surrounded by strangers who kept insisting they were friends.Leo disagreed. He ran from gentle hands. He turned down toys. He looked at our best offerings, including chicken, as if we had misunderstood the assignment entirely. So we did the hardest thing - we took a step back.We gave him room, let the silence stretch, let him watch, listen, and conduct his careful little investigations. You could almost see the gears turning. Are they safe? Are they patient? Will they still be here tomorrow?Yes, Leo. Yes, we will.First came the quick snack, grabbed like a secret. Then the pause that lasted a heartbeat longer than yesterday. Then he leaned into an ear rub. Then, as if surprised by his own courage, he climbed into a lap.And just like that, everything was possible again.Today Leo greets us with a wag and a play bow. He says goodbye with soft kisses. He decided that the world didn't end after all; it merely took a detour. The next couch may be different, but it will still be warm. The people may be new, but they will still be his. This is what bravery looks like in a small dog. Not loud. Not flashy. Just the steady decision to try again.Animal Aid Society is located at 80 Butler Farm Road in Hampton, VA. Visiting hours are 9 am to noon, including weekends and holidays.Interested?
