Story
Canelo is a German Shepard/Husky mix (1.5 yo).Canelo is sweet, loving, and a very energetic boy.Canelo loves to play and practices an active lifestyle. Canelo is potty trained, kennel trained, and all vaccinations are up to date.Unfortunately, while having Canelo in our home we have learned that one of us are allergic to dogs and can no longer keep him. This is such a bummer for us and we wish we could keep him as he was the perfect fit to our life.

Thank you for joining us on the Big Day of Giving Sacramento to make a lasting impact—together, we have the power to change lives! Although the Big Day of Giving, which is a 24-hour community effort to support non-profits, has ended, our need for ongoing funding will continue throughout the year. Each dog's bio includes an active donate button that lets you support our current and future dogs.  Introducing Ambra, a stunning shepherd with a flowing coat and a heart full of love. When she first arrived, her veterinary team rallied around her, determined to give her a second chance at life. Her family, living deep in the countryside, had struggled for five days to find help, with the closest emergency vet a daunting three-hour journey away. Now on the mend after being struck by a car and undergoing two surgeries to repair her injuries, Ambra is showing her resilience. Her first operation mended her injured hip, cleaned and stitched her infected wounds, and carefully stabilized her other leg with a splint and bandages, giving it the best chance to heal naturally. While antibiotics helped her wounds heal and her stitches have been removed, Ambra’s leg needed more care than expected. In her fourth week, she was hospitalized for a second surgery. She still wears her splint and bandage, which we hope to remove in about three weeks. Each week, she visits the orthopedics team at UCDVMTH for fresh bandages. Now, Ambra confidently walks into her appointments on her own, a wonderful change from her early days when she needed a sling just to stand and ride in a gurney to her check-ups. Ambra’s journey is far from over, with another 5 to 7 weeks of crate rest ahead to ensure her surgical sites heal fully. Yet as her strength returns, her joyful, lovely personality shines through. For now, she enjoys short, twice-daily walks and endless cuddle sessions with her foster mom, happily playing with toys while she rests. We still have one more surgery for Ambra to spay her and repair her abdominal hernia. We anticipate this surgery to take place in 7 weeks, coinciding with her clearance from her orthopedics team.   Every bit of support, whether it’s a donation, supplies, or a heartfelt message, makes a world of difference as Ambra heals. If you know anyone who adores long-coated shepherds, please share Ambra’s story so she can find the loving forever home she deserves. Ambra delights in her meals, eagerly accepts treats to slip on her soft e-cone and settle into her crate, takes her medicine with grace, and absolutely loves pets and being told she’s a good girl. We can’t wait to share more of Ambra’s journey as she heals and her beautiful coat returns. Once she gets the green light from her vet team, she’ll finally meet her foster siblings and start making new friends. While Ambra recovers, your support through financial donations, supplies to keep her mind engaged with enrichment toys, or good wishes would mean a lot and is greatly appreciated. Our wishlists at Chewy and Amazon provide a general idea of our needs. Ambra is currently eating Purina Pro Plan kibble, which we can obtain at approximately $70 per bag with our discounts.  We are grateful that Ambra’s medical care is through the UCDVMTH Fracture Program for Rescue Animals. If you would like to help, we encourage you to donate to the Fracture Program in support of Ambra’s care here. It’s a fantastic service that has helped other shepherds in our program in prior years and other shelter animals as well.  Ambra will be ready for adoption once she is medically cleared and spayed. At 6 months old, this gorgeous pure-breed shepherd puppy joined our rescue family when she was just 4 weeks old and only 3 lbs.  Otti was found "wandering the streets," which is difficult to imagine since she was hardly mobile, treated for dehydration, and sent home to us since she's too young to be at the shelter. We had so much fun picking out a name for her and showering her with love; her foster family has chosen to call her Otti, as she reminded them of a baby otter when she arrived. She also had a small injury to her ear, which healed right away after she was given antibiotics to prevent infection! Her daily routine until she was fully vaccinated at 4 months was filled with the cutest activities: eating, pooping, and sleeping, all while enjoying plenty of snuggles. A lover of toys, her fuzzy bed, her three housemates, and her people, Otti grew up with excursions in her stroller, accompanying her folks on errands and outings, including heading to work with one of her foster family members when no one could be home with her.  When not in her pen, she loved to sleep right next to a resident dog or by her humans' slippered feet. She’s now completely crate- and potty-trained, walks well on leash on her frequent walks, and still adores her mates and her family. And still snuggles right in.  Just as we were about to take her bio live for adoption, we noticed that she was beginning to tail-chase, which can be caused by early weaning or anxiety, and shepherds are a breed prone to this behavior. We immediately consulted a behavior-oriented trainer and followed up with the Board-Certified Behavior team at UC Davis Veterinary Teaching Hospital. With their experienced eye, they diagnosed Otti with anxious behaviors, and her foster family immediately implemented the protocols established by her behavior veterinarians, along with prescription medication. Her anxiety has diminished, but her tail chasing hasn’t completely abated. We’ve now added an SSRI and are waiting for it to fully take effect.  Otti’s love of toys and teething led her to swallow one of her favorite fuzzy toys, a retriever-style. Labs and goldens are more prone to swallowing toys. which led to abdominal surgery and her spay at the same time. Otti has recovered completely, and long, fuzzy soft toys are banned at her house.  Otti’s our special needs pup looking to match with a forever family who understands what may be a lifelong anxious or OCD behavior and continues the management and medical protocol set forth by her behavior vets.  Have you checked out our YouTube channel? Thank you for joining us on the Big Day of Giving Sacramento to make a lasting impact—together, we have the power to change lives! Although the Big Day of Giving, which is a 24-hour community effort to support non-profits, has ended, our need for ongoing funding will continue throughout the year. Each dog's bio includes an active donate button that lets you support our current and future dogs.  Meet Drago, the irresistibly adorable four-month-old shepherd who’s already stealing hearts with his floppy ears and joyful spirit! With his wagging tail, bright eyes, and boundless curiosity, Drago brings happiness wherever he goes. He's amazing in public, even at an outdoor restaurant with a live band, kids and lots of dogs mingling around.  Drago is truly something special! This wonderful pup has impressed us with his stable temperament and remarkable adaptability to new situations. After just three days in a temporary foster home, Drago bravely boarded a Pilots and Paws flight to South Bay and settled right into his foster home, where he’s blossoming as he awaits his forever family. Whether he’s snuggling up for cuddles or making new canine friends, this little social butterfly is always on the lookout for his next playmate, toy-sharing buddy, or partner in zoomies. Drago made a seamless transition from his first foster home with four resident shepherds to his current home with two shepherds, a cat, and three teens. With the right feline companion, we believe Drago could thrive in a cat-friendly household. Drago travels like a pro, whether he’s in a car or a Cessna, and he’s a social butterfly with both men and women. He’s clearly had home experience—comfortable, confident, and crate-trained, Drago prefers to sleep in his crate close to his people at night. He snoozes peacefully and typically only needs one potty break after about six hours. With puppy teeth coming in, Drago is on the hunt for safe ways to soothe his gums—so he’s given plenty of toys and close supervision to keep those chompers away from furniture. He’s well on his way to mastering outdoor potty habits, and with gentle reminders and the help of resident dogs (plus a doggy door), he’s quickly learning the ropes of household manners. Drago is a calm, observant pup who loves staying close to his people—often with a favorite toy in tow. He’s affectionate, learning to sit politely for attention, and even wore ear protection like a champ on his plane ride. Easy on the leash and eager for new experiences, Drago has already accompanied his foster mom out to lunch for some extra socialization. Drago is thriving and can’t wait to charm his way into the hearts of his forever family! Have you checked out our YouTube channel? Story
Redding is a handsome boy who requires a home that can help establish boundaries for him. Redding is house-trained and enjoys car rides, playing fetch, and playing in the water. He is also a regular in the shelter playgroups and does well with other dogs. Redding is a working dog who will benefit greatly from training and a savvy adopter or foster. He is two years old and is likely a Shepherd/Husky mix. Please help us save Redding by sharing his story. Observation comments: It takes time to familiarize and gain trust, so a slow introduction is recommended. This animal requires an experienced handler. It does not do well with sudden human approaches from all directions during the first meet-and-greet. Summary: Due to its size and strength, kids need to be supervised around the dog. This animal requires some space for himself, so do not approach without permission from the animal. Attempting to socialize with this animal is safe at a short distance away without constant, straight eye contact. If this animal acknowledges you, he will approach you naturally and accept your invitation. Once that happens, you will be his best buddy for life! Redding has a hit-or-miss personality. His German Shepherd is a bit picky, but he plays well in the boarding facility playgroup and has been tested at our partnered local boarding club. His personality will change with a calm, quiet, loving home over time.
