Story
Lady is a loving dog with one of the best smiles you’ll ever see! Due to pain in her elbow, Lady only does 10- to 15-minute walks twice a day, but that doesn’t dampen her spirit! While she enjoys her short walks, she really loves playing games in the house, and will happily play hide-and-seek with her favorite toys. Lady will do great in any kind of household, as long as there are no other pets. She is very affectionate with the people and interacts great with children. She also makes the perfect office or couch buddy, as she settles down well and is fully potty trained. She loves to hang out with her people, leaning in for pets and lying next to you while you work or relax. This lovely girl came to the shelter just before Thanksgiving2023, when her family was no longer able to take care of her. Since then, she has been patiently waiting for her new family. We think Lady is just the sweetest dog, and we know you will too! Fine Print Lady is best in a household with no other pets. She is great with children!

Story
There is not enough room here for a full description. Please reach out. Rocky is a 4 year old German Shepard / Staffordshire Terrier mix. A happy, playful, and very smart dog. He loves people and food. He loves to pay catch, and he loves to run. He is so very loved by his family. Rocky knows a lot of words like sit, stand, lay down, sit pretty, paw, share, kills, touch, place, stay, wait, on/off, heal (with me), and others. He lets me clip his nails, file them, brush his teeth, clean his ears, clean his paws, and help him when he gets hurt. He lets me put shoes on him, as well as jackets and hats, and anything else. Rocky has not shown any separation anxiety and has been left for a full day at home alone. He’s never chewed on furniture, or destroyed property, other than his own stuffies. He hasn’t chewed on any clothing since he stopped teething as a puppy. He’s just an amazing dog who likes to sleep a lot.

Amos, Neutered male, 1 year 8 months,, 46-Lbs. If you would like to give AMOS a forever home, please contact abetterchancerescue@gmail.com OR log onto abetterchancerescue.org to fill out online application About Amos: Amos is one of the best behaved dogs, according to the foster family. He is loving and passionate, yet stable, calm, friendly and obedient. He can easily befriend strangers including kids; also gets along well with other dogs and cats. He is potty trained and crate trained. He will be your good friend and a great companion pet. Amos is patiently waiting for a second chance to join a family of his own! Amos’ rescue story: Amos used to be a stray and was taken home to guard the house by his master. Unfortunately, Amos was terribly mistreated: not only he was poorly fed, but also often beaten by his master. When Amos’s plight was witnessed by the volunteer, she mad a desperate plea for Amos’ owner to let her take Amos from him. Reluctantly, the man gave in. Under the care of his foster family, Amos gained both weight and good spirit; most importantly, he never lost his trust toward humans. Amos also learned good manner and sanitation habit. He enjoyed playing with other dogs too. Story
All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated, and microchipped.  * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. Our adoption fees vary. Each biography will specifically list the adoption fee. Adoption Fee $600   Meet Coral - a 10-12 month old who is the total package of great looks and easy-to-train smarts. After receiving an urgent call from the shelter where Coral and her nine newborn pups were set to be euthanized we jumped into action and sprung this wonderful family. How could their lives end when they’d just begun?  After arriving on the peninsula they settled into their foster home, where Coral has been a doting, playful mom to all her pups. It’s now time for Coral to find her own forever family, where she can be doted on and play without minding the puppy pen.    From the foster:   From day one, Coral was a love. She let us handle her very young pups as we set-up a space where she could nurse and pop in and out for some yard time. Coral is housetrained so she was given full access to our home and easily settled into her new routine of caring for her pups, taking in all the smells in the yard, and seeing what everyone was up to around the house.    Coral is young herself, so she has the spunky playful energy of a young dog without you having to wait for her to grow into herself. At 50 lbs she’s the perfect medium-sized dog. She learned her name quickly, comes when called, and her smarts and attention will make her easy to train - she soaks it up.     She loves meeting new people, loves to play, and rolls over for belly rubs for her adoring fans. Though she hasn’t been out on leash walks yet due to nursing, she will be a neighborhood favorite based on the comments our visitors make when they pop in. Her coat is silky soft, her playfulness would be suitable to having a fur-sibling, and her sweet soul melts into you during the quiet moments at home.  As a natural protector she gives a barky hello to new visitors but after introductions, they are fast friends.     She adores her humans and is calm and relaxed when she’s hanging out during the WFH day. Coral makes a great zoom buddy - no barking, no jumping around on screen, just chillin’ until our next activity. She’s not a chewer, and can be left at home without incident when we have to work in a different office. She’d also make a great adventure companion as she’s agile and patient.    She is a snuggler. Movie night anyone? Grab the popcorn and a blanket and Coral’s all in!   We wake up about 6:30am and head outside for playtime before breakfast. Coral eats a mixture of NutriSource kibble and Blue Mountain wet food. Lights out about 10pm.    Coral and her newborn family’s fate all changed in an instant. The family who adopts Coral will welcome a great young dog with so much love and potential. Her silky softness, loyalty and smarts would be a perfect fit for so many people/families.  What a lucky gal to now get to live a full life and equally lucky is her adopter :)  We love you Coral!   Adopters should be prepared to complete Coral’s training. This is important for a smart, young dog.  If there are kids in the home they should be over the age of 10.  May 17, 2025, 11:48 am

Story
Stewie is a charming, devoted and affectionate two-year-old boy with folks he knows and trusts. He completed a month-long training through Canine Purpose's Board and Traning program in Loomis and currently attends group classes with his foster families. This handsome boy has the brains and a big heart to match. He can be handful with a cheeky side making significant progress in impulse control while his handlers have learned that he's a boy who needs structure and thrives when his people give him clear direction. Stewie has two foster homes, switching between the households regularly.  Stewie's affectionate nature once he establishes a relationship with you means that you'll always have a best friend nearby, preferably leaning into you or snuggling while you watch TV or read and if allowed in bed with you. In his foster home with doggie mates, he sleeps free starting the night snuggled right in bed next to his humans to move off to a dog bed later in the night. In his foster home where he's a solo dog, he sleeps in his crate easily; knowing each households rules and following them.  Stewie has been working hard in his training sessions, mastering meeting strangers with an easy hi, learning a solid place command, working with multiple handlers on the desired heel position, and maintaining his learned skills in increasingly distracting environments. At the same time, he loves his trainers with his vast capacity for joy and loves to please them. Stewie has a natural shepherd stranger danger focus around strangers requiring an experienced handler whom he trusts at which time he'll cede those decisions to his handler.  With his intelligence, eagerness to please those he loves, and love of treats, it's been lovely to watch Stewie heal from the repair of his fractured leg that required months of crate confinement, followed by rehab, and the vitality of a young shepherd who finally could run and play and join his multiple foster families (he had four during his crate confinement) in long walks, play with the resident shepherds and learn to swim with them, then evolve into a potential candidate for Dock Diving since he loves to leap into the water, dunk his head in completely to fetch his toys out of the water.  Suppose you love training your dog, have excellent handling skills to provide structure and experience with shepherds or similar breeds, and are looking for a shepherd to continue developing your dog's obedience skills. In that case, Stewie is ready to be the devoted companion you have been searching for. In return, he would love a steady supply of balls, toys, especially squeaky ones, and many swim opportunities. Stewie's entirely crate and potty trained, has earned the right to sleep free, and shows himself trustworthy while his people are away without being crated. As months have progressed, he's even settled in the car, snoozing on the way to destinations for hours long rides. He's generally a quiet boy in the house, leaving it to his mates to bark at preceived critter prowlers in the yard at night and loud noises in the street.  Stewie enjoys many fruits and vegetables, including blueberries, bananas, oranges, apples, nectarines, cucumbers, and carrots. Generally, he's game to try any food you offer, including fan favorites of pumpkin, cottage cheese, and yogurt, to name a few. He had many filled Kongs, Toppls, and other enrichments during his long crate confinement. A slim and trim boy, Stewie loves his kibble and eats his meals with the resident dogs, sitting for his meals before eating from his bowl. Before heading to Canine Purpose for training, Stewie generally could honor sit, down, stay, leave it, come, wait, in bed, hop in, no.  Those skills were further refined during his training.  Stewie also started the initial stages of NACSW nosework training for enrichment during his long healing process. He enjoyed finding treats and kibble in boxes and other containers and on natural lawn objects like rocks, tree limbs, and lawn furniture.  We are grateful to UCDVMTH's Fracture Program for Rescues for allowing us the opportunity to repair his leg and to the shelter vet who brought his case to the attention of this program to avoid amputating his leg. Despite the pain of his fractured tibia at the ER and in the shelter, he was such a good-natured boy.  Stewie's care meant coordination amongst an extensive team, beginning with the ER staff at the hospital that treated him immediately after being hit by a car, the shelter vet and staff when he was surrendered for lack of funds to repair his leg, UCDVMTH veterinarians, and staff, and our rescue volunteers managing many details regarding transportation, medications, surgery and follow up visits including rehab consult with Integrative Medicine to develop the plan to ease him into full use of his leg.  All accomplished, a success story for everyone involved, including his multiple primary and relief foster homes, who have loved and cared for him.  Stewie is an active, energetic, and, at times, handful shepherd, so he'll thrive in a home where he can enjoy regular exercise and play. He'll be a great companion for someone who enjoys outdoor activities like hiking. He's loved hiking in Tahoe and is happy to put in four-plus miles on trails. He lives with multiple resident shepherds, adores the foster puppies who come through his foster home including them in play with his balls and mouthy games that go on forever, and has a couple of BFFs at Canine Purpose who match his play style. Stewie can be pushy/rude  in play and if paired with another dog will need a neutral dog as a companion. His current mates are very dog savvy, he respects the older dogs and plays well with the younger ones. Stewie has been adopted twice by folks who found his looks captivating, fell in love with and yet returned him within weeks before he could settle. They admitted to overlooking his true shepherd personality and guidance from his foster families and trainers. If you're interested in Stewie, please note that his fosters will be very selective after Stewie's two adoption experiences and will want to meet multiple times including with his trainers before commiting to launch Stewie to a forever home. He is very loved and would remain with his foster families permanently except one frequently travels for work and the other is at the permanent dog limit set by their animal control jurisdiction.  Take advantage of this opportunity to see if you are a match for this beautiful shepherd. Please select the adopt button and fill out an application for us to connect about Stewie.  As a foster-based rescue, ShepHeroes is always in need of fosters. Story
Say hello to this gorgeous 4-month-old girl. She and her littermate arrived on May 1st just in time for Big Day of Giving, a four-county effort to celebrate and support over 800 non-profits operating in Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado, and Yolo Counties in collaboration with the Sacramento Region Community Foundation.  Millie has since settled in her San Jose-based foster home with a male and female shepherd. She's also met her foster family's extended family and their small-breed dogs, demonstrating that she's flexible with her friends and adores playing with them. She's learning that car rides mean fun excursions. Following her spay and hernia surgery discharge, she even caught a flight from Sacramento to San Jose with Pilots and Pups, a Sacramento-based volunteer pilot organization. Millie's a healthy girl who is shedding her puppy teeth and is ready for adoption.  Before her surgery, Millie went from the shelter to a temporary foster home, which allowed her to clean up with baths, sleep in the comforts of a home, and get lots of love. She shared her temporary foster home with a senior golden retriever and an adult shepherd mix.  Millie arrived from the shelter with her littermate via two-car transport legs to bring them to safety. They were initially sighted by concerned farmers who saw a mama with six puppies, leading them to organize with the local shelter to protect the family. Still, they could only initially trap four puppies. All four of those puppies were adopted by friends and family of that family. It took another two weeks before the mama and these two littermates were enticed to safety. The mama is safe and has a committed adopter, leaving her remaining two puppies needing help. We stepped in thanks to our foster families, volunteers, and the shelter staff, who made arrangements.  Both pups had baths, leaving all the mud and dirt behind. They also left behind food insecurity while living on the run in a field. They've been treated for fleas and parasites and shed their flea infestation. Although initially shy, these pups are soft, cuddly, and blossoming in the care of their fosters so much that Millie's littermate is being adopted by her initial foster family.  Please consider adopting Millie only if you have the time and commitment to raise a young shepherd puppy into a well-rounded adult dog. Investing time in training Millie will also be beneficial, as she's ready and eager to learn. Shepherd or similar working/herding dog experience is invaluable in raising puppies.  Have you visited our YouTube channel?
