There is almost always an acclimation period when a new pet joins the household. We are happy to suggest a few ways to ease the transition. If one of our dogs is reported to have lived with cats previously, that will be indicated in the dog's description! IS THIS DOG GOOD WITH OTHER DOGS? No dog loves every other dog, just as humans do not like every other human they meet. A proper introduction (meet and greet) would be required as part of our application process. IS THIS DOG GOOD WITH CHILDREN? The better question is how the children have been taught to handle animals. A dog will respond negatively if he/she is not being handled properly. We can offer suggestions on how to teach children to interact with dogs and pay attention to body language. Young children should never be left unsupervised with new dogs. WHY IS THIS DOG IN THE SHELTER? Brody had a rough start to life, I don't think he was given much time or handled kindly by his first owner - because of this he didn't know how great people can be, but he has worked very hard to build relationships and dog skills. He's immaculate in his kennel, no messes, loves enrichment - but will obliterate pillows, orthopedic beds and stuffies with exuberant glee 😬😬😬. So....I suggest we don't give him those. I'd say he's "mostly" good for walks - once you get in the flow, and he WORKS hard for that food. He loves people, loves to be petted, and will lay by your feet all day. Brody just wants to be by your side because he loves attention now that he trusts people and is a happy fellow. He will require a fenced yard, children over 13, no cats. If you want a loyal and lovable companion Brody is the perfect dog to meet! Fosters and adopters must live within an hour of metro Detroit. Birthdate 1-29-17

If you are looking for a canine companion to train for fun and competition, why not start with one thatalready has the basics down? At five years old and 58 pounds, ROCKY sits faster on command (and oftenif you just look at him) than the blink of an eye and is usually dependable for down, stay (I’m going outof sight), wait (I’m still here but don’t want you to move till I release you), left side (walk at my left or atleast at the left side of the street), this side (pass a mailbox on the street side, not around behind it),free (to be a dog and sniff around or release from another command) or let’s go (he has sniffed thatspot long enough or we’re moving forward!), come, find it, crate crate (he races to his crate and waitsfor a treat), load up (jumps into car crate and upon arrival at the destination waits to be leashed beforejumping out of the crate even if the gate is open), release (he drops what he has in his mouth), leave it(ignore something on the ground), catch.  He jumps up in excited greeting but not ON you. He is greatat bath and nail-trim time with his current foster but slightly uneasy during vet exams (though he stepson the weight scale easily and sits for the balance to settle). He’s also anxious in a moving car; though ifhe can stick his nose through an open window, he’s a happy camper! He may need refresher trainingonce he’s in his new home, but the interaction will be fun with quick results. This sweet boy is FOODAND TOY MOTIVATED!Rocky (formerly “Rocket”) has always had a loving family, and he’s adapted quickly to relocation. Thefirst time he was surrendered because his owner had to move in with family that didn’t want the dog.The next family retired and wanted to travel, deciding that a life in the kennel while they were gonewould not be much of a life. He now foster-boards with the professional groomer/pet sitter, whosefamily includes mom, dad, four sons (two teenagers, one 7yo, and an infant). He interacts beautifullywith all canine visitors and humans.He absolutely LOVES to play “flying disk” (like a “Frisbee,” but we use the fabric ones to protect histeeth) or chase a ball (often he will spit it out for you to throw again; other times you have to remindhim to release it). He walks comfortably on a leash, enjoys a game of tug, is crate- and house-trained,microchipped, neutered and up to date on vaccines and parasite preventatives. With continuedtraining, he could be a fantastic competition dog. He knows a few tricks like shake hands (with the leftfoot) and spin to the right, and cuddling on the sofa (with permission) is a favorite downtime hobby. Heloves to run, so a fenced yard is a top requirement. His Labrador (bird dog) instincts haven’t been lost inhis mix, and he alerts on and enjoys chasing birds in the back yard.This great dog is ready to go home the day the right application matches his needs.
