At just 10–12 weeks old and about 15 pounds, she came to DPS after being abandoned at a shelter— confused, frightened, and unsure of the world around her. Thanks to patience, kindness, and the steady guidance of the dogs in her foster home, Neapolitan is learning “how to dog” and discovering just how good life can be.   Neapolitan’s days follow a calm, predictable routine that she finds reassuring. She settles into her kennel around 9 or 10 p.m. and sleeps quietly and soundly until about 3–4 a.m., when she wakes for a quick potty break. After that, she goes right back into her kennel and sleeps until the household wakes up sometime between 7 and 9 a.m. She prefers her kennel to feel cozy but not closed off— she likes having all sides covered except the front, so she can keep an eye on things. Mornings start with breakfast, which is an important and happy ritual for her. She now enjoys half a can of wet food in the morning and grazes on kibble throughout the day.   During workdays, Neapolitan spends time in a pen after going outside, and on non-workdays she simply tags along with whatever her people are doing. She is an exceptionally easy puppy to have around. She adores comfort and can almost always be found snuggled on a bed, couch, or pillow, rotating between soft spots and settling in contentedly. She is not yet going on walks, as she is still finishing her vaccines, but she seems perfectly happy with home life for now.   When Neapolitan first arrived, she was clearly overwhelmed. Her foster family took things slowly, giving her space and time to decompress, and waited a couple of days before carefully and gradually introducing her to their two large dogs. That patience paid off beautifully. There has not been a single issue since, and Neapolitan now fully trusts the resident dogs, follows them everywhere, and considers herself part of the pack.   With people, she is still gaining confidence, but her progress has been remarkable. She is cautious when humans are standing or moving toward her and may step away, but when people are seated, she happily approaches for affection. She clearly wants love and connection and grows more trusting every day. She is incredibly sweet and gentle, and it’s obvious how badly she wants to belong. One of her most endearing traits is running up to her people to deliver enthusiastic little kisses, a sign of just how loving she truly is.   Neapolitan has a calm, laid-back personality, especially for a puppy. She is very much a couch potato who enjoys quiet petting sessions and lounging on soft surfaces. She will occasionally chew on a ball or entertain herself and will run around with the other dogs, but she does not engage much in active play with people yet. Loud, rough play between dogs can make her a bit nervous, and she prefers a more peaceful environment.   Remarkably, Neapolitan is already potty trained. She has not had a single accident in her foster home. When the back door is open, she lets herself out and comes right back in, and when it’s closed, she reliably stands by the door to let her people know she needs to go out. This suggests she likely had some experience living in a home before, and she takes to household routines with ease.   As for typical puppy behaviors, Neapolitan is refreshingly low-key. She does not chew inappropriately, does not dig excessively (though she has created one large hole in the yard that she enjoys lounging in), and only barks occasionally. She may howl briefly when first left in her pen but settles down on her own. Overall, she is gentle, well-mannered, and incredibly easy to live with.   What truly sets Neapolitan apart is how loving and uncomplicated she is. Despite her rough start, she is affectionate, calm, and deeply appreciative of comfort and companionship. She’s the kind of puppy who quietly fits into your life, curls up beside you, and makes everything feel a little softer. Neapolitan would make a wonderful addition to just about any home ready to give her the love and security she’s been waiting for—and in return, she’ll offer loyalty, sweetness, and an easygoing presence that’s rare in a puppy her age.February 2, 2026, 8:44 pm

Story
FOSTER CARE! Hello, my name is Rudy and I'm a 3-year-old, neutered Border Collie mix that currently weighs about 45lbs. I'm a sweet and friendly guy that's hoping for a family that understands my special needs don’t make me any less loveable! I have a chronic balance issue that causes me to have a bit of a wobble, especially when I'm excited. But don't worry, I'm still a happy go lucky guy and I've adapted just fine! Sometimes other animals don't understand my signature wobble, so I'd like meet any residents dogs to make sure we get along. For more information about me, just ask Customer Service about Rudy! ID# A960272 My foster family says I'm the bestest boy! Here's how I've been in their home: Rudy is such a good boy! He has a bit of a wobble, but that doesn't stop him from enjoying daily walks, going for short trots, and playing with the family. He does great in the car. He can jump in on his own (we act as a spotter just in case) and he sits patiently during the entre drive just taking in the sights and smells. He loves squeaky toys and sometimes carries them with him on walks. This adorable boy is very affectionate and is a constant companion. He will follow you around the house like a fur and LOVES to cuddle. We have been able to leave him home for the work day without any accidents. He will try to chase small animals like birds, cats, and wildlife so he will probably be best as the only child. He is an absolute joy to have and we hope he finds his forever family soon.   Unless otherwise indicated, adoptable animals are located at our Lantos Center for Compassion at 1450 Rollins Road, Burlingame, CA 94010.  You may call us at 650-340-7022 to schedule an appointment, or just drop by. Drop-In hours for Same Day Adoptions are 11 am – 5 pm, 7 days a week (closed major holidays). We do our best to update our listings regularly, but we can’t guarantee every animal you see is still available. It’s also typical for us to have animals who haven’t had their photos taken yet, so you are welcome to visit our adoption center and have a look around! Story
Montana is an affectionate 4-year-old Lab/Pit mix who’s ready to be your loyal companion for life. This sweet girl is a fetch fanatic who lives for playtime and loves nothing more than chasing balls with her favorite humans. She’s both treat and toy motivated and ready to learn new tricks. Montana gets along fine with other dogs, but she’s truly a people-focused pup who wants to be your number-one play partner. On a recent Doggie Day Out adventure, she proved to be a calm car passenger and a wonderful trail companion. She enjoys sniffy walks and likes to lead the way without pulling on the leash. Though Montana can be a little shy when meeting new people, she warms up quickly with patience (and a few tasty treats). Once she feels comfortable, she enjoys gentle petting and cuddle time with her friends. If you can toss a tennis ball, you’re already in her inner circle! Montana was placed on final because shelter life has become overwhelming for her. Repeated encounters with unfamiliar people reaching into her kennel have left her feeling uneasy, and she may growl or show her teeth to ask for space. But outside the kennel, Montana’s true personality shines—sweet, playful, and full of love. Montana will thrive in a calm, patient home that gives her time to decompress and build trus ##2599337##

Story
STABBED BY HIS OWNER, NOW HES ALL ALONE Rescue preferred This is not the life Buster deserves to be living Buster came to the shelter in July after being stabbed by his owner with a sword. He was seen by an offsite vet, his owner was arrested, and he has been here as evidence ever since. His owner’s case was dismissed due to a lack of evidence (unfortunately), and Buster is now FINALLY able to leave the shelter after being cooped up in a kennel for over FIVE MONTHS. We prefer that Buster goes to a rescue, as we do not want Buster to ever have to go back to the person who did this to him— he deserves better. He deserves love. Buster’s story is sad, but please do not bring him into your home unprepared just because his story tugs at your heart. Anyone who takes Buster home needs to be prepared for a long and potentially rocky and frustrating decompression process. Being in a shelter for so long is not easy and takes a toll on a dog’s psyche (and behaviors). He needs space and grace to heal. Currently, Buster’s mind is all over the place so it takes him a bit to connect with people because he is just too overwhelmed. He needs someone who understands that it may not be love at first sight. Someone patient who will not necessarily shower him with love but will give him structure, boundaries, and a safe place to rest his bones. Buster seems to want to be with dogs, but again, he needs to decompress. He lacks manners and shows some dominant behaviors, possibly due to how stressed he is. We cannot say for sure how his opinion of dogs and behaviors toward them will change once he is in a home, but currently he would do best with SLOW intros (decompression!!!!) and a tolerant, friendly dog. ##2619651##
