Story
She is a beautiful Senior girl ready for her forever home. Shelby is an 11 yo 6 mo. old mix – German Sheppard/Lab/Chow/Super Mutt through DNA. Her body structure is similar to a chow, very compact and not really big. Shelby is 65 lbs. and is a perfect weight. She was regularly seen by the vet and had a wellness check on October 3. She walks well on the leash and is not reactive to dogs she meets—excellent leash behavior when meeting dogs and people on their walks. She is supposed to be good with cats, but we have not tested her. She loves to give kisses even when you are grooming. Shelby is not a fan of the vet and recommended she be muzzled by her previous owner, but she is just nervous and does well with an experienced and patient vet. She was wary and very nervous but did not growl or try and bite the vet. She has adjusted to her foster home in San Jose with three dogs and young grandkids.

Story
All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated, and microchipped.  * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. Our adoption fees vary. Each biography will specifically list the adoption fee.Adoption Fee: $500   STOP! DPS needs your help. Vote for Winky. We are finalists in grooming transformation contest. We need your votes. You can vote once a day but on multiple devices. http://bit.ly/dpswinky The Shakespeare Puppies are a litter of 4 month old German Shepherd mix puppies. They were surrendered to us after Mama got busy with a few neighborhood boys and had a litter. Mom got fixed, so no more late night romance for her! These puppies will be large when fully grown so they are perfect for large dog lovers! This litter is 2 girls. We will be looking for individual homes for each puppy as we do not place siblings together.  The puppies wake up around 7 AM and get breakfast as their pen is cleaned out. They spend the morning romping back and forth from the toy bin and the backyard, chasing each other in between activities and naps. They have lunch around 1 PM before their afternoon nap. They race around the backyard in the late afternoon before they have dinner at 5 PM and then get some training in. They are very food motivated hungry little hippos! Before bed, they wind down with some cuddles and snuggles. They sleep in a pen connected to a crate and pile together to dream of sonnets through the night.  Titania: Queen Titania is Queen of Cuddles! She is the sibling most likely to hang back while her littermates are pouncing on each other in the yard. She loves to spend her days being cuddled like a baby, giving kisses and hugs out to all who meet her. Titania does love a romp around with her brother and sisters, but she knows that the best way to get attention is to sneak away for snuggles. This lovely gal will cast a spell over you and you will fall in love!  Viola: Little Viola is Little Miss Independent. She absolutely loves investigating the sights and sounds of the backyard, the toy bin, the puppy pen, and any other room she is allowed in. She also loves to zoom around with her siblings, showing off her skills as a runner! Viola is an absolute sweetheart and helps keep her siblings in line when they are being chaotic, and shows love to all who meet her! The Shakespeare Puppies are only an option for those who have owned a dog in the past 5 years. Homes with previous large breed experience will be prioritized as we want to ensure families are ready for the energy level and intelligence of the breed mix. Kids in the home should be over the age of 7.May 17, 2024, 2:15 pm

Story
Meet Ella, a sweet 7-month-old pup who's had a rough start but is flourishing in her foster home! Despite her anxiety at the scary shelter, Ella showed the staff that she was very affectionate. She has quickly adapted to her foster home, showing impressive skills like leash manners, giving alternating paws, and mastering sit and down commands. Ella's an intelligent girl who adores treats, which makes training a breeze.  While crate training is ongoing, Ella is already a pro at snuggling up in the car during road trips with her foster siblings. Ella is also learning that there's plenty of love to go around in her foster family, including three resident shepherds and Jouska, our other rescue puppy, who stayed with them for six days until her current foster home was ready for her.  In typical shepherd fashion, Ella follows her people from room to room, settling in for cat naps while they do household chores. Her foster home also has a couple of kitties; we'll soon have an update on how she might fare with felines. And she's won the approval of the resident female shepherd who at first thought Ella was just a pest and needed to learn how to play nicely with other dogs. Ella has done her proud. At her playdate with this week with Aries at his foster home, she played nicely with Aries and the two resident shepherd. Ella needs a slow intro to new dogs, and has also spent time with another one of alums getting along lovely.  Enjoy her new vidoes and remember to check out additional vidoes of our pups at https://www.youtube.com/@ShepHeroes Last week while she was recovering from spay surgery, Ella visited the vet to glue one of her stitches that was opening up and to be treated for an ear infection. She was a trooper during her visit for her errant stitch before heading home with antibiotics and ear meds. Her spay incision is healed and her ear infection is clearing. This snuggle bug looks forward to finding her forever home, where she can grow and spread lots of joy. As with all of our puppies, please consider applying for Ella if you have experience raising shepherds or similar intelligent working breed dogs. They require physical and mental exercise, structure, training, and extensive environmental exposure to become neutral adult dogs.  ##1986210##

Puck, Gus Gus and BG were featured on Fox 40's Big Day of Giving segment this morning, May 2nd. If you didn't catch a glimpse of these sweet pups live on the air, we've attached the segment to our playlist here. Please join us in thanking the Sacramento Community Foundation and Fox 40 for the oppurtunity to showcase our work along with Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary. Looking for a bundle of joy to light up your life? Look no further than Puck, our latest adorable 6-month-old Shepherd puppy! This little ball of fur is the epitome of cuteness and charm. Puck is not just your average puppy; he’s a superstar when it comes to crate and potty training. That’s right, there have been no accidents in the house with this clever boy since he arrived from the shelter! Plus, he’s a pro at sleeping through the night in his crate, so you can rest easy knowing you’ll get a good night’s sleep. This energetic pup is passionate about playtime, especially involving his favorite toys, almost any toy, and hanging out with his furry friends. Whether it’s a game of fetch or a romp in the yard, Puck is always ready for fun. He's dog savvy, knowing pretty quickly which dogs are tolerant of his puppy shenanigans and which ones are hands off. After giving all the dogs boundless kisses and climbing all over them, he quickly got the lay of the land that the younger shepherds are into playing. But don’t worry—Puck knows when it’s time to wind down, too. He loves nothing more than snuggling up at his foster mom’s feet while she works and taking cozy naps in between bouts of play. Puck has the cutest puppy snores when he's really tired. He is a source of endless kisses and snuggling right now. A solid pup, Puck's shown us that he is comfortable on all kinds of surfaces and super smart too. If not asked to be in his crate, you might find him dosing on top his crate or a box. Puck knows all about his crate and when asked, he'll stop to grab a toy and head right in. He settles without a peep until you're ready to have him join all the activities.  Puck came to us wanting to inhale his food and rudely scope out the other dogs' bowls, so he initially ate from a slow feeder bowl in his crate and learned that there is plenty of food to go around in our care. Puck now eats with the resident dogs with everyone respecting each others bowls although once all are done, he joins the round robin of licking the empty bowls.  Although he's lost some puppy teeth in favor of adult ones coming in, he's not mouthy so his prior household appears to have worked with him in that aspect. He selects his toys to help with the achey teeth and settles right in next to his people, he's easy going with his toys selecting replacements out of the basket when he looses one to the other dogs or under the couches.  Puck keeps his super glossy soft black coat with baths, he easily sits in the shower enjoying the water and scrubs. Puck loves water so much we'll see if he might like to swim soon. Since Easter weekend, Puck has been living with his original relief foster family. He's so good and fits right in that his foster family easily works from home while caring for him. He's sharing his foster home with two kids and their two female shepherds. Puck is a regular at the kids' track meets and soccer games, always available for snuggles and loves. And some bonus pup cups. He visits his original foster home a couple days a week for the day to hang out with all of his buddies while his foster family heads into the office.  Puck is a solid temperament pup, easy to walk on leash without any fears, happy to meet kids and adults in new places with a waggy tail and happy demeanor. He recently met an older couple and we loved seeing him adjust his pace in consideration.  If you’re ready to add joy to your family, Puck is the perfect match for you! Puck was a delight at both our outreach booths at the April 7th Paws n Play Sacramento's Market Place and the April 20th Sacramento SPCA Doggy Dash, if you met him at either event, you know how he steals hearts whereever he goes.  Adopt Puck, and you’ll gain a loyal companion who will bring endless love and laughter into your home.  Let's find him a great forever home that is training and structure oriented as this little guy can charm his way into trouble, he'll need a shepherd experienced home.  ##2000719##

Story
Breaking news: Niko's rocking his collar following his neuter surgery! Happy Friday everyone.  Say hello to Niko! He's had some changes in his young life, at six months, being given away by his owner to good samaritans in a Tractor Supply parking lot. He was brought to safety through their efforts to find options for him. In their quest they connected with a family willing to foster him until he finds his perfect match and that family had connections to one of our volunteers.  His fosters are shepherd savvy, and Niko's thriving in their care. We know he's cat-workable, dog-friendly, and a little shy meeting new people, but give him a few minutes and treats, he lights up. Niko was also a gem at his first vet appointment, getting caught up on vaccines, getting a health check-up, and starting on preventatives. While we were working on an appointment to get him neutered, he learned to sit down, recall, and relax in his new environment, including crating. Niko adores his fosters and the structure he's getting in their care after all the changes in his life. A treat and praise-motivated shepherd mix, he's a quick learner.  This 44-lb sweet boy also loves the snow, all his toys, and snuggling with his resident buddy. For his early morning neuter appointment this week, NIko camped out at a relief foster located near the hospital overnight, displaying all that makes him a wonderful boy. Within a couple of hours at his relief foster home, he'd met all the resident dogs, started playing with the youngest shepherd, respecting the older ones, and reciprocating all the love from his temporary humans. He even took a long nap after his evening meal in his crate.  And settled right next to the pack for downtime in between more play sessions outside.  Nilo rides nicely free in the car; he took a ride over to a Golden 1 bank to have his photo taken for one of our thank you's to Golden One for sponsoring Big Day of Giving. He adored the young girl at the next ATM machine who was equally smitten. Niko will be on the smaller size of a shepherd mix, what we love to call pocket sized.  As with our puppies, please consider applying for Niko if you have experience raising shepherds or similar smart working breed dogs. They require physical and mental exercise, structure, training, and extensive environmental exposure to become neutral adult dogs.  ##2006769##

Gus was such a polite little guy winning everyones hearts with snuggles and wiggling body.  Gus Gus is an adorable four-month-old shepherd pup ready to steal your heart! He's been a lovely addition to his foster home, where he lives in a bustling household with the resident dog he snuggles and learns from, three resident cats, two birds, and a doting teenager.   Augustus (Gus Gus) is such a chill puppy, until it is time to play with his big dog sister.  Their favorite game is tug, where the tugging is more important than the winning, with each of them giving the other side back to the other to continue. Smart as a whip, Gus learned how to sit the day after coming to his foster, and to lay down the day after that.  Being super treat and food motivated makes training him a breeze.  He is being bell trained to let you know when he needs a bathroom break but has also figured out that means you will get up just to let him out to explore (did I mention he was smart?). While Gus likes to be in the same room with his foster humans, he is a little independent, until you go outside.  In the backyard he wants to walk right beside you, which makes walking on a leash that much easier.  True to the ShepHERD part, he loves to collect his family’s shoes and clothes and bring them all to his bed to snuggle. And he doesn't chew on them.  Gus loves kids and would be a perfect family dog.  He lives with a 13-year-old and loves to visit the 1 year old across the street to give her kisses.  He is a great car dog and we try to take him as much as we can (he does know that his favorite pupachinos come from Starbucks). He is a crate PRO!  He thrives on routines and knows when we put on the music and grab his treat, that means we need to leave, and he runs into his kennel and sits down.  He also knows the treat at night means it is bedtime and he goes right into his crate then too. Gus  loves his visits to Petco for treats and new harnesses, as he's been growing by leaps in the last few weeks. He's even hung out in the family's RV in case his potential forever family likes to camp to get him used to new experiences.  He loves snuggling for TV time and enjoys watching Dr. Pol and other shows attentive for his young age. He recently spent a weekend at a back up foster, sliding right into their home, hearts  and lives with ease playing with the resident dogs and gravitating to their young boy. Gus Gus arrived from the shelter with his three littermates, Archie, Arlo, and Zeux. They were on the euthanasia list five days after clearing their mandated hold period due to space. We are so grateful to our community for saying yes to save their lives. The pups are well-adjusted, happy puppies that would have been adopted from shelters if not for the overwhelming number of litters ending up at rural and urban CA shelters.  Gus Gus was also at our Sacramento SPCA Doggy Dash booth.  He enjoyed seeing his littermate Archie and playing with Jouska and Puck too.  If you're ready to bring home a cat workable, kid and dog friendly young boy, please hit the adopt button to let us know of your interest. Young pups can't be home alone for long periods and require commitment to training, social exposures and structure along with patience to arrive at a neutral dog past the adolescent years. We prefer shepherd experience or similar large breed experience in our puppy adopters.  ##2014541##
