You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Thank you for stopping by to see me!  Please fill out an application to set up  a private meeting.  Want to meet me? Come to the Underdog Headquarters (3345 Dakota Ave, St. Louis Park, 55416) for an Adoption Event on Sunday November 26th from 10:30-11:30 am. Please email inquiries@underdogrescuemn.com for questions regarding the dogs.   Hello, my name is Aletha. I am a gorgeous adult female Shih Tzu who is super loving once I get to know people. I enjoy following my people everywhere especially to the kitchen because I do after all, need to help clean up anything that may fall to the floor…I’m just sayin’! I also love, love, love to play with stuffy toys that squeak, and will empty out the toy box trying to collect them all (hee, hee)!! Lastly, I like to say ‘hello’ to the strangers outside so I guess it’s safe to say that I can be a bit vocal. Hee, hee!! I am good with kids & other dogs and I’m always respectful of meowy things cuz let’s face it…who wants to get whacked in the face by a ninja-quick paw am I right!?! I’m still working on potty training but I’m confident a consistent schedule will help me master it and I need a fenced yard because I have very little leash experience and won’t do my business while tethered to it. I am however, a very smart girl who is not only crate trained but I know commands like “come”, “outside”, and “go potty”. All I need now is YOU, a patient, unconditionally loving fur-ever family that will NEVER give up on me! I am an incredibly sweet girl who is truly a joy to have around…even foster mom says so, and I promise I’m worth it. I just know that you and I are destined to spend our lives together and we will make some amazing memories! Love, Aletha *Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders.  Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared.  Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption.  This will be at the adopters expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a    particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit.  Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.     ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there***  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.If you have other questions about me you can email Underdog Rescue at <inquiries@underdogrescuemn.com> ADOPTION EVENTS:      Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. Invisible/ underground fencing is not recommended for most rescue dogs. Are you in the market for a handsome Shih Tzu?  Well, your luck will have it that I am that exact description! I t’s been a journey here so far and I must admit that finding a forever place to lay my paws is a wish I’ve had for a long time.  I’ve got my vices, like crinkle toys, treats and playing with other fur friends.  I know I look like being a lap dog is my jam, but it’s really not.  I’m not a fan of being picked up and held, although I don’t bite or bark.  I tolerate it begrudgingly.  Inside I‘m rolling my eyes.  While I’m at it, I despise the crate too.  I don’t bark in there or go potty in it, but what the heck?! Can’t I just be left out to chill?  I will occasionally chase a ball but don’t take bets I’ll do it every time.  I do enjoy zipping around in a fenced yard and frolicking with friends.  I even do a great job of going potty outside when on a schedule.  I’d really enjoy having a fur friend to play tag with out in the yard, but having another dog in my forever home isn't required. I’m not sure what leashes are for, so I freeze up on them.  Every day I come out of my shell a bit more, as I gain confidence playing with my fur siblings.  They’ve even taught me to go up steps and how to go in/out of the house on my own!  I do enjoy being pet (but do you really need to hold me?!).  I’m super food motivated and enjoy my zoomies.  I can’t wait to see all the things I’ll learn in my forever home! Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Frenchie is a lovely dog and anyone would be lucky to be her forever home. She is an approximately three year old breeder release Shih-Tzu who is such a snuggly and loving dog, she would fit in (almost) seamlessly with any family that is missing an extra piece. Frenchie is partially house trained (was unsettled after her alteration but hasn’t had an accident since she’s healed). She’s house trained and is able to stay overnight in her kennel until you’re ready to be up at a reasonable hour (she’s pretty respectful like that). She spends every night in there and seems comfortable to have her own space. She has let out a whelp or two when we’ve left the house but it’s nothing overly bothersome. Frenchie loves all people, from preschoolers to adults. She’s particularly close to her foster mom and is the BEST snuggler. She’s been a good foster sister to her small dog foster brother, though some play fighting over toys has been known to happen (she is okay to give the toy up though and is generally a peacemaker). She is protective but not to a fault. She barks if there’s anything that she feels needs to be known or seen but isn’t excessive with it. She loves dog toys and generally knows how to distinguish between what’s acceptable for her to play with but isn’t perfect. She’s been known to steal a toy or two from the little human or chew on the wood corner of a decoration but it’s nothing that raised a concern. She REALLY doesn’t like the vacuum cleaner but does okay with a roomba. When outside, she loves to explore so if there’s a space in the fence that she can get out of or somewhere under the deck that she can squeeze into, she will go there. She’s had some accidents and does need to be let out often but we’ve been working with a bell and knows that the bell means to go out. She also sometimes thinks that poo is a treat so if you don’t pick up droppings immediately, she might try to snack on them (just doing her part to keep things tidy, TBH). Frenchie does okay on a leash but will need a little work on the mechanics of it. She thrashes around a little on a harness but is happy to see other pups while out and about and is nothing but friendly to others. She’s OKAY in the car - small car rides, she likes to be held. Long rides, she cries for a little bit but is okay if she needs to stay in her kennel.Frenchie is a wonderful inside dog who happily takes zoomie-laps outside when going to the bathroom but will snuggle on your lap after.  Her energy level seems pretty on-par with her size, but she’s probably more of a lap dog rather than an energetic one. Frenchie just wants to be loved. She spent years with a breeder but it didn’t seem to affect her sweet hearted-ness. In fact, it seems that the only thing she suffered from was three broken teeth that needed to be removed. She’s not fearful or sad, she just wants snuggles and to be told that she’s brave - because she is. She’s the best dog and anyone would be lucky to have her!!   Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, dental, Prepaid microchip, Dewormed, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Hi everyone, my name is Frank, or Frankie, as my foster mom calls me. I spent the first 3 years of my life in commercial breeding and am just now finding out what it is to be a dog and enjoying this great big world! I still find it overwhelming sometimes but I am also very curious and like to cautiously explore. It takes me a little time to warm up to people but I love scratches and attention so I come around, in fact I am trying to help my mom type this as we speak! sjkylfwq Ok so a little about me. I am told I can be a little bossy when I want something but I prefer to think of it as opinionated. I love to eat, which is one of the things I have opinions about. The other thing I can be vocal about is spending time in my crate. I begrudgingly sleep in there when my mom is in the room, but when she puts me in there to work or when she leaves, I have a lot to say about it. I mean come on, I spent most of my life in a crate and now that I know what freedom is I don't want to go back! My mom has started letting me wander while she works which I find much better and generally do some exploring before settling down to a nap. Lots of things are new to me like the outdoors. At first I was skeptical but now I LOVE being outside. I have to go out on a leash which I find a little restricting for my explorations, and on top of that someone is always following me around (I mean can't a guy get some privacy to do his business!? Sheesh), but I am getting used to it. As long as we go outside on a schedule I promise to do all my business out there. I have two brother dogs in my home and we often go to visit some lady dogs down the street. They are all bigger than me, but that ok, it just means I can use them to stand on to get closer to the treats. I am not huge on playing or interacting at this point and toys just confuse me. I have not been around a cat yet, but I would probably just leave them alone. Other likes and dislikes: Likes: watching things out the window, scratches around my ears and tail, dental treats, walking through deep leaves, looking at my own reflection in mirrors and shiny surfaces (I mean if you were this cute you would too!) and for all you kids out there, I really will eat your homework! Dislikes: being picked up (but I will allow it), being left alone (I have never been alone before so it can be scary) and rain/snow (I mean the sky is broken and you should fix it...) So what do you say how about you come give me some treats and scratches and we can be friends! Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, Prepaid microchip, dental, Dewormed, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue. Meet Rusty the 7 month old Shorkie (Shitzu Yorkie mix). He is a great pup ready to find his forever home. I am very sad to have to rehome him but due to my career advancement I can no longer care for him. Some things that make him a great choice for you: * He is a smaller medium sized dog. So he is the perfect size for a lot of folks. * Has his shots done * He is a great cuddler but also likes to play (fetch, tug a war, frisbee etc.) * He is good with other pets and with children * He is potty trained * He will come with all of his belongings including a kennel, harness, leash, bed, blanket, toys, treats, dishes, food container, nail trimmer and more * He knows his name and some other tricks * He’s good on leash There are plenty of reasons to add Rusty to your home. Please reach out if you are interested. I am looking to get $500 for him but I may be open to an offer. Thank you so much for looking at my post!

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Simone is a shih tzu mix who is believed to be about 8 years old. Although we don't know much about the start of her life, we know Simone (who is called Monie in her foster home) is a mellow, sweet senior lady. She kennels easily and spends the day there while her foster family is at work. She sleeps on her dog bed on the floor in her foster mom's room at night. Monie seems to be house trained and will hang out by the back door when she needs to go potty. If we don't get her outside when she's sitting there, she will have an accident, but she seems housetrained when kept on a schedule. Simone lives with two other dogs in her foster home and does well.  She doesn't seek out playtime with them, but she does like to snuggle up to them during nap time. She is happy to sit on a lap and get pets and love all day long! Monie also likes to run around and explore in the backyard, but life outside the backyard can be a little scary for her. She does get nervous in the car and we're working on helping her walk comfortably on leash.   While we don't know her exact age, we can assume life hasn't always been easy for her. When Simone arrived in rescue, she had tumors on her chest and belly, had never been spayed, and had teeth crumbling out of her mouth. Luckily, surgeries and vet care have all gone incredibly well and she is healthy and looking for love. She only has three teeth left, but does well when her food is mixed with a little water to soften it up. She is ready to find the perfect home where she can spend her golden years. If you're willing to give this sweet soul a chance, fill out an application to meet her today!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Story
Gabby is a 2 1/2 year old mill release.  She has been in rescue with her foster family for 5 weeks. She's a shy girl, but has made huge strides in trusting everyone around her.  She is very sweet and loves to run and play with the other 5 dogs in her fosters house.   Gabby is such a happy girl, her tail is always wagging and loves giving kisses. When she came into rescue she was severely overweight due to her poor diet and environment she was living in.  She was diagnosed with alopecia (hair loss) across her lower back, but with weekly medicated baths, daily medicated moisturizer and being on a healthy diet her hair is coming back in small patches and she has lost a pound!  It will take continuing a good diet for her and exercise to lose the weight she needs to, which can take up to a year. Gabby will need a family who is truly committed to continuing her care for the alopecia until her hair comes back and keeping her on track with her weight.  She is working hard at potty training and needs to be kept on a schedule.  Along with the other dogs she lives with, she also lives with a cat and teenagers.  We would suggest she has another dog who can help her learn the ropes and continue growing her confidence.  This sweet girl is ready for her forever home now that she is all vetted! Story
Lolli came into rescue as an owner surrender on 9/7.  He has an energetic puppy energy, being only 18 most old.  Walks well on a leash, telling you when he has to go outside and will let you know when he wants his own space. He would do better in a house with no kids, would be fine with another dog.  It's a must that obedience training is done with Lolli so he is taught manners and has consistent rules. He loves to lay by his person getting petted, taking walks is a must as he loves them, and he doesn't mind sleeping in his crate with this stuffed animal at night. Lolli doesn't love being left alone, so he needs someone who isn't gone 10 hours days.    Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 24, 2023, 8:50 pm

Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 24, 2023, 8:50 pm

Story
In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Meet Archie, a gold and white Shih Tzu/Bichon born on 12/19/22. Archie is a very energetic little guy that enjoys playing and investigating everything new. He sometimes starts getting into things he shouldn’t, but is quickly diverted. When he isn't lying next to his foster mom, he is chewing on a chew stick or playing with his foster sibling, which includes running back and forth from room to room or wrestling. Archie is still working on housetraining. His foster parents take him out regularly and frequently to help with his potty training, but he also uses potty pads when needed. His new family must continue with his housetraining so that he consistently goes outdoors rather than relying on a pad. Archie eats three small meals a day and has transitioned to adult food. He is getting along with his new foster dog siblings and would do well with another small playful dog who has similar young energy, or he could also be the only dog in the house. His foster parents are helping him learn good house manners, which include when it’s appropriate to bark, not jumping on people, and learning good behavior. Puppies require a lot of training and attention, but he will be a great addition to any family that has the patience, dedication and desire to meet the needs of a puppy. These are the requirements for Archie’s new family: 1. Because Archie is one year old, and will most likely live 16+ years, applications will only be accepted from age appropriate individuals who will be able to care for Archie for the rest of his life. 2. Applications will be considered if children in the home are 10 years or older, and if they have had experience interacting with a young, small dog. 3. Archie will require training beyond just housetraining, so enrolling him and his new family in a puppy training class is strongly advised. His family must be committed to his continued training. 4. Must be home most of the day (not gone generally more than 3 hours). 5. A fenced yard would be great, but is not a deal breaker. If there is no fenced yard, his family must be willing and able to take Archie on a couple very long walks every day (weather permitting). 6. Live within 60 miles of Saint Paul, Minnesota and agree to attend the annual rescue reunion held each year in September. Archie is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. His adoption fee is $470.00 plus $40.07 sales tax for a total adoption fee of $510.07. To meet Archie, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at Chuck and Don’s at 6821 York Avenue South, Edina near Southdale.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Thank you for stopping by to see me!  Please fill out an application to set up  a private meeting.  Hi I'm Haru!  I'm a handsome guy who is happy as can be!  When I meet new people I can be shy and may even hide and observe from a safe spot til I feel comfortable.  Give me a little attention though and I open up and show you my happy silly side.  I'll give you my biggest smile and my tail will wag like crazy and then I give you my belly for belly rubs!  Those are my favorite thing in the world!  I must admit I warm up to ladies faster than men.  I'm not mean I just keep my distance.  I don't have any kids in my foster home, but I think little ones might be a bit overwhelming to me right now. so I'd prefer older, respectful kids.  I enjoy my lap time with my foster mama and happily sit and kiss her face so she knows how much I love her.  I'm a pretty  curious guy and like to explore my home and go on little walks to sniff the air and feel the sun on my face.  I'm kennel trained and am working on potty training.  I know I'll master that soon with your help.  I do well with other dogs, but I like to be top dog. I'm a bit of an alpha guy, you could say, so a basic obedience class to keep teaching me how to meet and play with other dogs would be great!  I think I'd do just fine as an only dog though since I'm confident once I settle into my home. I don't require a fenced in yard, but if you had one that I could run around in, that sure would be fun!  I haven't yet met any cats, but would be happy to meet any you might have.  I think we'll be great together so hurry up and apply now!    Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. If an event is not listed within their bio above, the animal is not planning to attend.  Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. We recommend filling out an application and we will set up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved. ADOPTION PROCEDURE: The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website: http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/adoptionprocess/   Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.  All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions. FOSTER CARE: All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption, but each bio is written by the foster as they see them, in their home. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality, but it cannot be guaranteed. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves in time and with patience.  If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website  www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications  and fill out a foster application. NUTRITION: Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets.  All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet.  All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal. YOU CAN HELP: Not able to foster or adopt right now? Please consider sponsoring an Underdog. Your donation will help us buy dog food and pay for medical costs. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.//     Find our applications at www.midwestanimalrescue.org Adoption Fee $450 plus taxThis little guy is such a happy boy! He licks his bowl clean twice a day. He has tons of energy and loves squeaky toys, real chew bones, stuffed with whatever. Bogi is a snuggler who will plop down on your lap after giving you a lick. He knows the word 'outside' and runs to the door. (He also may be a candidate to ring the bell when he wants to go out.) He especially likes to play a game with is temporary brother: I pee, you pee, I pee, you pee. This can go on for a very long time. He gets along well with his canine siblings (also small dogs) as well as the 15 yr old cat who lives here. We're still working on figuring out his poop schedule but if he doesn't go outside, he somehow knows to go on the potty pad. He may have been trained to do this, because he even found it during the night when the house was dark. He still like to mark new areas, but we are working on that. Bogi seems to know how to walk on a leash; he also learns things quickly, so he might be fun to train either basic obedience or perhaps even some agility. When he arrived, he was severely matted and needed an equally severe haircut, so he will need regular brushing and/or professional grooming every 2-3 months. This little guy will be an asset to any home that will maximize his potential. He deserves the best you have to give him. Just look into those eyes     If you have previously applied with us please email adoptionatmars@gmail.com to reactivate your application with new interest. All fees are subject to MN sales tax and a processing fee at the time of adoption. We accept Credit cards, Debit cards as well as cash. At this time we do not accept checks. Our Adoption fees for all animals cover required vetting: which includes, Rabies, Distemper Vaccine Series, Bordetella, Deworming, Heartworm Test as age appropriate, Spay or Neuter and Microchip and registration. Adoption Fees are Non Negotialble. All fees are subject to MN sales tax and a processing fee at the time of adoption. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.   or     *The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility and does not come with a pedigree. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed. Sometimes the pets appear to be a particular breed(s) in the pictures we receive from our rescue partners and when they arrive we are surprised to see an entirely different breed(s) in person!  If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess. It is with deep longing that we wish there was a breed called "cute" as we believe all of our dogs would fall under this new breed classification! Completion of an Adoption Application via our website www.midwestanimalrescue.org is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is the first step in our adoption process.  *Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.  Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks. Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.   //
