Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Thank you for stopping by to see me!  Please fill out an application to set up  a private meeting.    Hello, my name is Charleston! I am a dashing, calm, and very sweet senior male Shih Tzu who loves to sit on foster mom’s lap while she works. I’m not really into toys but I enjoy watching TV, sleeping in bed with mom at night, and I LOVE to eat food and treats, especially popcorn… YUUUMMM! Oh yea, I’m quite the dancer too! It’s true, in fact, I think my moves are better than Fred Astaire’s and I like to show off my dancing prowess whenever I want a treat or to be lifted onto the couch. By the way, I also did great at the groomer but then who doesn’t want to look all spiffy am I right!?! Anyway, I do not like being left alone and I hate the kennel/crate! As a matter of fact, I will bark in either of those situations so hopefully my new family will be home with me (and doesn’t have shared walls!). I am, however, good about doing my business outside on a schedule; I do well with the leash; and I’m great with kids, cats, and other small dogs like me. All I need now is YOU…a patient, unconditionally loving fur-ever family that will NEVER give up on me. I’m a patient guy with a wonderful soul and a heart that is brimming with love that I want to share with you! I really hope you’ll be my new family…I assure you that life will be MUCH better if we share it together! Love, Charleston *Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non-shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit. Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.   ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there*** Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.If you have other questions about me you can email Underdog Rescue at <inquiries@underdogrescuemn.com> ADOPTION EVENTS:      Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. If an event is not listed within their bio above, the animal is not planning to attend.  Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. We recommend filling out an application and we will set up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved. ADOPTION PROCEDURE: The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website: http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/adoptionprocess/   Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.  All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions. FOSTER CARE: All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption, but each bio is written by the foster as they see them, in their home. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality, but it cannot be guaranteed. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves in time and with patience.  If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website  www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications  and fill out a foster application. NUTRITION: Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets.  All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet.  All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal. YOU CAN HELP: Not able to foster or adopt right now? Please consider sponsoring an Underdog. Your donation will help us buy dog food and pay for medical costs. In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Petey is an 8-year-old male Shih Tzu mix that weighs 15 pounds. He has beautiful curly black hair with a small white mark on his chest. Petey came into rescue when we were contacted by a veterinary clinic, where he was taken to be euthanized because his owners didn’t want him anymore. The vet thought Petey was a sweet boy and wouldn’t, in all good conscience, euthanize him, so the owners just gave him to the clinic. Petey had been badly neglected by his owners, was horribly matted and had no previous veterinary care. When he was evaluated by the veterinarian, Petey was found to have chronic kidney disease. He is now on a very specific prescription diet for kidney disease and is doing very well. He cannot have any other food or treats because his kidney disease will return and he will prematurely die. But if maintained on the prescription diet, he can live a long, healthy, happy life. No other medications, other than the diet, are necessary. Petey is a loving, happy guy. He follows his people and wants to be by you or at least always be able to see you. He likes to spend his evenings sitting with you. He enjoys going outside and loves a fenced in yard. Petey is pretty well house trained, and his foster parents continue to work on that by letting him out every couple hours during the day, and by having piddle pads available for him at night. He sleeps contently in his own bed at night. He gets along with his foster siblings so a small companion dog would be fine.. An adults only home would suit him perfectly, although older children (older than 12 years), who are quiet and respectful would be okay. These are the requirements for Petey’s new family: • An adult, stay at home family, although older children would be okay. • Petey does not do stairs so he needs to live in a single story home. • A fenced yard is a plus.t. He loves to explore the outdoors, but as importantly, he must be let out every 2-3 hours to urinate, and a fenced yard would facilitate that. • Petey needs a family that can willingly afford his prescription kidney disease diet, and be vigilant about feeding him ONLY the prescribed food, including treats. He must stay on this for the rest of his life in order to remain healthy. • A family within 60 miles of the Twin Cities. • Commit to attending the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion every year in September. Petey is neutered, current on vaccinations and on heartworm and flea preventative. He is scheduled for a dental January 3rd at Rice Creek with a recheck of labs scheduled a month later in February, also at Rice Creek. Petey’s adoption fee is $270.00 plus $23.02 sales tax for a total cost of $293.02. To meet Petey, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at PETCO in Southtown Center in Bloomington.

Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you. Sunny is a creamy white and brown cute little Shih Tzu that is two years old and weighs about 15 pounds. She has just been rescued from an Iowa puppy mill and is learning the joy of living free and encountering new things in life. She is sweet, fun-loving and is excited to find new toys to play with in a basket, and shakes them. She thoroughly enjoys playing with little dogs. She is learning how to walk on a leash and seems to enjoy walks, although she tends to stick to herself as she takes in all the smells. Sunny loves to be in the same room with everyone and wants a little scratch behind the ear or on top or the head – she absolutely loves the pleasure of it, after never experiencing it before in her life. Because she spent her life in a puppy mill, Sunny has not had much experience being out of doors, but she enjoys going outside in the yard when it’s dry; she doesn’t like the wet ground. Sunny is a little skittish of people and would do best with another small dog to serve as a role model and who could give her some confidence. However every day she is a little bolder and more playful. She will continue to become more confident and will flourish with a patient, understanding family. Small children (under the age of ten) would be too much activity for her, and a quiet, calm home would be best. She doesn’t want to be alone or in a kennel so a family with someone home most of the time would be great for Sunny. Sunny is in the process of being house trained and will need some reinforcing and patience when she makes the transition to her new home. She is perfectly happy sleeping in her kennel all night WITH THE DOOR OPEN. Sunny is a sweetheart who wants a quiet patient home and family. To ensure that, here are the requirements for her new family: • Sunny with thrive with an active family/owner that will walk her regularly and make her a part of their daily life. • A family that works from home or is home most of the day • Sunny can be in a home with another small dog who will help her learn by being a role model and friend. • A family with children over the age of 10 will be considered, depending on their experience with a small dog. • Sunny’s new family should live within the 30-45 miles of Lakeville, MN and commit to attending the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each year in September. We understand there are quite a few requirements for Sunny’s new family. But if you meet the requirements, you will have abundant joy with this cute, sweet little girl. Sunny is spayed, current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Her adoption fee is $420.00 plus $35.81 in sales tax for a total of $455.81. To meet Sunny, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southtown Petco in Bloomington, MN.

Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Meet Jake, who is a 6 year old multi colored (cream, brown and grey) fun loving Shih Tzu. He recently rescued from from a puppy mill in Iowa. Unlike most mill dogs, this little guy is NOT shy, and is in fact quite the opposite. He loves people and will do anything to get their attention. He is quiet, good with other dogs and likes squeaky toys. He sleeps through the night in his bed (see picture attached) and he is ecstatic about being a pet in his foster home. But there is still some work to be done, such as learning to walk on a leash and potty training. However, he has learned very quickly and is making significant progress. But his new family must be patient and understanding, and continue with his training to ensure that he will be reliably housetrained. A big part of housetraining is being walked regularly every day, which is a must for Jake. He enjoys other small dogs and would do well in a home with another small dog from whom he can continue to learn. Following are the requirements for Jake’s new family: • A family who is home for much of the day and who will make Jake a part of their daily life. • A patient, understanding family who will continue with Jake’s housetraining, leash training, and helping him learn to be a family member. • Another small dog in the family would be a bonus for Jake. • A family with children over the age of ten will be considered, based upon their previous experience with small dogs. • Family must live within 25 miles of Edina, MN and commit to attending the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each year in September. Jake has been neutered, is current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative care. His adoption fee is $320.00 plus $27.28 in sales tax for a total of $347.28 To meet Jake, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph.
