You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Thank you for stopping by to see me!  Please fill out an application to set up  a private meeting.    Hello, my name is Charleston! I am a dashing, calm, and very sweet senior male Shih Tzu who loves to sit on foster mom’s lap while she works. I’m not really into toys but I enjoy watching TV, sleeping in bed with mom at night, and I LOVE to eat food and treats, especially popcorn… YUUUMMM! Oh yea, I’m quite the dancer too! It’s true, in fact, I think my moves are better than Fred Astaire’s and I like to show off my dancing prowess whenever I want a treat or to be lifted onto the couch. By the way, I also did great at the groomer but then who doesn’t want to look all spiffy am I right!?! Anyway, I do not like being left alone and I hate the kennel/crate! As a matter of fact, I will bark in either of those situations so hopefully my new family will be home with me (and doesn’t have shared walls!). I am, however, good about doing my business outside on a schedule; I do well with the leash; and I’m great with kids, cats, and other small dogs like me. All I need now is YOU…a patient, unconditionally loving fur-ever family that will NEVER give up on me. I’m a patient guy with a wonderful soul and a heart that is brimming with love that I want to share with you! I really hope you’ll be my new family…I assure you that life will be MUCH better if we share it together! Love, Charleston *Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Thank you for stopping by to see me!  Please fill out an application to set up  a private meeting.  Hey there, I’m Archie! I may be a senior, but let me tell you, I’ve still got plenty of love and energy to go around. I’m a total indoor dog—I mean, who needs the great outdoors when you’ve got all the cozy comforts of home, right? Whether it’s rain or shine, I’m perfectly content to do my business outside and then hurry back indoors for some quality snuggle time. Toys? Oh, I can’t get enough of them! Soft, crinkly, you name it—I’ll play with anything you give me. And when it comes to treats, well, let’s just say I’ve never met one I didn’t like. Now, about that fenced yard situation—I’m not so sure I need one. Sure, I enjoy the occasional walk, but I’m not dependent on it for bathroom breaks. I’m more of a in-and-out kind of guy when it comes to outdoor activities. Plus, I’m not the best on a leash and new things can make me a little nervous, so having a safe and secure yard where I can play without worry sounds like a dream. But let me tell you, when it comes to snuggles, I’m the absolute best. I’ll cuddle up with you for hours on end, bringing joy and warmth to your home every single day. So if you’re looking for a loving companion who’s just as happy playing with toys as he is snuggling up on the couch, then look no further—I’m your guy, Archie, ready to bring a whole lot of love into your life! *Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. Summer Breeze...makes me feel fine...blowing through the jasmine in my miiiiinnnd My foster mumsie sings that to me because she says I remind her of that song ....I'm like a warm Summer Breeze coming to bring you out of your winter woes. I make friends with all the dogs big and small, I like cats,I love kids, and I am gentle, wiggle butt of happiness all the time. My foster mumsie says another big bonus is that I'm like a shihtzu for someone on a budget... I have the cute squishy face and none of that long hair that has to be continuously groomed. Win-win! Summer is a wonderful little Shihtzu mix of some such. She is approx a year old and 14lbs grown. She is extremely easy, happy, and affectionate. She gets along with all of my dogs and fosters ,my cats, and the neighbor kids love her. They are at my door daily to see if she can come out and play. Summer recalls like a dream and doesn't run off if not on leash, but she also has great leash skills now. She is kennel trained and sleeps overnight in her kennel. She loves toys and to play, starting to learn fetch with little smaller 's. She is very gentle and would be perfect for a family even with small children. She is still working on her potty training, but is learning fast. She is maybe medium energy. While she does love to play and bounce around she also can just sit on your lap while watching a movie. Local adoption fee is $200 (in TX) Out of state adoption fee is $400 (includes transport to your area - $50 Temporary Fuel Charge will be added)

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Charlie is a 13-year-old male Shih Tzu mix that weighs 9 pounds. He has beautiful curly white and brown fur. Charlie’s owner died and a family friend cared for him for a while, but was eventually surrendered to our rescue due to the family having 3 large dogs who intimidated and overpowered him. Charlie has no teeth therefore he eats small kibble or moist dog food and soft treats. He has some hearing loss and gets startled easily if touched from behind. Charlie is a loving, happy guy. He follows his people and wants to be by you or at least always be able to see you. He spends his day sleeping near his foster family while they work at home. Charlie shows no interest in playing with toys. He enjoys going outside and loves a fenced in yard. He is house trained but needs to be let out every few hours. His foster parents make sure to let him out before leaving the house and frequently throughout the day. He sleeps contently in his own bed at night but would love to sleep in his people’s bed if given the opportunity. Charlie enjoys looking out the patio window, scouting out invading birds and squirrels on the deck. He doesn’t bark much when his foster family is around but gets very excited when his foster family returns home. When the weather is warm, he likes to sit out on the deck with his foster family. He walks well on the leash and loves to go to the park. Charlie has had frequent ear infections in the past and his adopters must clean his ears once a week to prevent infection. An adults only home would suit him perfectly, although older children (older than 12 years), who are respectful, would be okay. Charlie has no teeth, so he eats small kibble or moist dog food and soft treats. He has some hearing loss and gets startled easily if touched from behind. He would be okay with another small dog in the house, and may rely on the other dog if his hearing continues to diminish. These are the requirements for Charlie’s new family: • A stay-at-home family, or a family where someone is home most of the day. Older children would be okay. • A fenced yard is a plus but not a requirement. He will explore the outdoors but should not be left alone outside. • A family that is willing to clean his ears once a week. • A family who lives within 30 miles of the Twin Cities. While Charlie is 13 years old, he will still bring many years of love and companionship to a family who will open their hearts to a senior dog. We hope his new family will plan to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion every year in September. Charlie is neutered, current on vaccinations, and on heartworm and flea & tick preventative medication. Charlie’s adoption fee is $75.00 plus $6.39 sales tax for a total cost of $81.39. To meet Charlie, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at PETCO in Southtown Center in Bloomington.

Story
I am Noel. I am from Kentucky If you're looking for a hiking partner, look away! Noel's idea of an active life is going around the yard a couple times, followed by a nap. With a clean bill of health, this girl is ready to be someone's spoiled, pampered princess. And just like the Princess in the Princess and the Pea, this girl is sensitive. No kids and no rough handling for her. This girl needs an experienced owner who is willing to build trust, respect her boundaries and help her learn to feel safe and secure in higher stress situations like the vet. Noel currently lives with a cat and another small dog. She has little interest in either of them, but can get snappy with the other dog if he gets too close to her food. She can manage the three steps at the back door, but a full staircase from the first floor to the upstairs is a bit much from her, as is jumping up on the furniture. She'll happily fuss to let you know she wants up and is fine being carried up and down. Because of her sensitivity around rough hands, Noel is only available to homes with no children. While you'll need a little patience to win her full trust, this girl will reward you by making curling up at your side her favorite hobby. From the Vet: Hi! I'm Noel a spunky southern gal finally ready to be looking for my furever home! I came into rescue a few months ago and needed to have several medical issues addressed before I could commit to the search for a home. I came having already had a recent mammary mass removal surgery when I was still in Kentucky. The biopsy from that surgery was inconclusive so I was scheduled for a second mass removal surgery at which time it was determined that the masses were a non-cancerous benign growth. My future family should monitor for any future masses and consult a primary care vet if new masses present. I also had a dental procedure where 17 teeth were extracted. At home dental care is recommended to maintain oral health as much as possible. On my first exam, grade 2/4 MPL's (medial luxating patellas) were noted, however I am walking fine and not experiencing any lameness or pain. Currently, surgical intervention will not be needed. Joint supplements and other supportive care in addition to exercise and lean diet could be considered helpful. Hope to settle into a quiet, happy home in my later years!

Story
Hey there, folks! Oreo here, ready to give you the lowdown on why I'm the ultimate canine companion you've been searching for. First things first, I'm a fun-loving, affectionate dude. Let's talk fun! I live for those moments when I can dash around the yard, feeling the wind in my fur. And let me tell you, I've got some serious potential when it comes to agility – I'm nimble, quick, and always up for a challenge. Bring on the obstacles, I'll show 'em who's boss! However, I should go to a home with a fenced yard.  Now, onto the cozy stuff. Picture this: me, curled up on the couch, surrounded by soft blankets, and snuggled up next to you. Sounds dreamy, right? Well, that's just a typical evening for us if you decide to bring me into your home. Here's where I really shine – security detail. Forget about fancy alarm systems, because with me around, you've got the best security in town. I've got a keen eye and sharp ears, and I'll make sure to alert you if anyone even dares to step foot near our turf. No shared walls needed for this top-notch security system! And hey, let's not forget about my furry friends. I'm a social butterfly when it comes to other dogs – friendly, playful, and always up for a good time. So, if you've got canine companions at home, I'll fit right in like a missing puzzle piece. So, what do you say? Ready to invite a fun-loving, cuddle-ready, and ultra-secure pup like me into your life? I promise, once you meet me, you'll wonder how you ever lived without me. ##1946766##

Story
Hi, my name is Bella!  The first thing you should know is that I will follow MY human everywhere. If sit down, I will sit right beside you and cuddle any chance I get. Oh, and I like to help keep the house clean- I'm told this is one of my best features. For example, if we’re outside and the ground is wet when we come inside, I will wait for you to dry off my paws before I go walking through the house. I also spend the nights in my kennel and not complain. In the mornings sometimes you’ll hear me like a tiny alarm clock waking you up, but I’m not very loud. I also know that the first thing we do is go outside. But this is where I have a little bit of trouble because, although I know to use potty pads in the house if I have to go, I don't aways remind my foster mom to take me outside... except in the mornings! My foster mom does this really weird crazy dance outside when I actually do go potty and it makes me laugh. I love being outside when the weather is nice, especially when it means going for walks with my human. I really just want to be with you and when I'm out in the yard without structure, I get a little too caught up with all the things around me. My foster mom says I bark at the wind. Together, we are working on that and I am trying really hard to bark less. If we go for a walk, though, I’m much more focused and I enjoy seeing all the things there is to see, plus it's great bonding time!  This is Bella‘s Foster mom and I would recommend that Bella be the single dog in a household. She is currently fostered with my resident dog and she shows no interest in socializing. Bella will play by herself with her own toys, but does not engage with my dog at all and tells her to go away if she tries to come around to play. She also prefers a quieter household with no children. It does seem that some sudden movements still spook her which does cause her to snap at you a little bit. The potty training has been coming along a little slow, but she is progressing very well. She was obviously trained in her previous life to use potty pads so I think going outside is just a new experience. She does great in her kennel and sleeps through the night or if you prefer, she is a great bed partner as well. All in all, it has been really fun having Bella here. She has the softest fur and most beautiful big brown eyes and just wants to be with you any chance she gets. When she gets that burst of energy and she wants to play, she will grab her toy and just run through the house like a little mad woman and you can’t stop laughing. She truly is a little spitfire ##2008779##

Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Thank you for stopping by to see me!  Please fill out an application to set up  a private meeting.    Don’t confuse me with Ms Martha Stewart. Although we do share in common the love of being the boss (which is different from being bossy!) I am a happy little girl who loves life, toys and watching TV.  While you may prefer a good crime show, I like the Dog Whisperer, or something that has dogs on it so I can run up to the TV and get a closeup view.  I even like being in the fenced yard where I will run all around and even approach people walking by or something in the woods.  I won’t bark at them, but I do want them to notice me and my cute little self.  So I wag (ya know, the dog version of waving – hee hee). Squeaky toys are the best invention! I will chase it and retrieve it but can’t promise I’ll give it to you.  We can work on sharing skills – ha ha! I do like the other dogs in my foster home but I don’t require other ones. But I do need a fenced yard in my forever home.    I am potty trained and can also use a potty pad inside.  I’ve even had some walks on a leash, although I won’t say I’m an expert.  And you really can’t say I’m a barker.  But I have been known to let out a random bark for no reason other than to remind you I here. Oh and before I forget, please oh please rub my belly.  It’s the best thing since – well, since EVER!  I like it so much I might try to convince you to do it 24/7.  So if you’re on the hunt for a lap dog who is just adorable in every aspect, then I’m your gal! Furever yours? Martha *Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders.  Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared.  Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption.  This will be at the adopters expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses .   Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue.   Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Thank you for stopping by to see me!  Please fill out an application to set up  a private meeting.  Hello, I’m Dolma, a sweet yet timid and shy lady. Excuse me, is that a small child over there? Ohhh, I’m just going to scurry over here for a moment. Yes, I know toddlers are a sweet joy to many, I understand, however, not I. I won’t be aggressive around little ones, I’m not a monster, but it’s just something about their tiny bodies when they’re charging at me that gives me the heebie jeebies so I may set a boundary by showcasing some fear. I tend to have this feeling around men as well, so yes, I’m a gals gal as I adore my foster mom. Now, don’t get me wrong, I think I would most likely do fantastic, be a great addition to a large family, but maybe a home with older kids that are sensitive to understanding that I need some practice getting comfortable with them. I’ve met a few and I want to play with them so badly, but I’m still learning to trust. Treats would be a great motivator in this area as I absolutely LOVE food. Speaking of my favorite things, I’ve got some good news, you won’t have to worry about overspending on toys as I’ll play with the simplest things, like yogurt containers. I find it fun chasing them around so take note, don’t just toss out old containers! Lastly, if I promise to be a good girl while you’re away, maybe you could pick up a chew bone as a reward.  Right now, I’m still learning to walk on a leash and I’ll admit I tend to freeze, but with practice I’m sure I could adapt. Since I have had most experience with a fenced yard, I will need one in my forever home. We must also continue working on potty training but being on a consistent schedule will help. I’m great around all types of dogs, I enjoy the friendly ones the most, I do require a doggy companion in my forever home. I don’t generally tend to bark, but since I am a Lhasa Apso and was originally bred to be a royal watchdog, I will bark if I am alarmed to let you know something seems off.  As I mentioned earlier, I am a gals gal, and I will even give my foster mom’s sweater a tug if I’m not getting enough attention. Admittedly, I may not stop until I get some pets and affection! Please know that I am as sweet as I look, docile and I’m looking for someone that wants to love me as much as I already love them! I just know if we give it some time to get to know each other, we will be best friends forever. I can’t wait to meet you! This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non-shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit. Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.   ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there*** Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.If you have other questions about me you can email Underdog Rescue at <inquiries@underdogrescuemn.com> ADOPTION EVENTS:      Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. If an event is not listed within their bio above, the animal is not planning to attend.  Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. We recommend filling out an application and we will set up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved. ADOPTION PROCEDURE: The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website: http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/adoptionprocess/   Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.  All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions. FOSTER CARE: All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption, but each bio is written by the foster as they see them, in their home. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality, but it cannot be guaranteed. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves in time and with patience.  If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website  www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications  and fill out a foster application. NUTRITION: Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets.  All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet.  All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal.
