Story
Thumper was 1 day away from getting the needle when he was brought to Wisconsin. Why would a young, beautiful, vibrant dog be next up for euthanasia? Thumper was captured in the mountains of Kentucky with a pack of dogs. He didn’t know, like or trust humans. If you tried to put a leash on him, he would flop around, pull, bite on the leash and paw at it until his feet were bleeding. Because of his fear, you couldn’t pet him as he would hide in the back of the cage.  It took 4 days of dragging Thumper around the yard to get him to accept a leash. Three days later, he was off leash. Because Thumper is a pack dog, he accepts his role in the pack. He quickly became loyal and followed directions.  Thumper is listed as a mixed breed. He looks, acts, and feels like a border collie. He is very smart and shows his personality running in the woods and playing with other dogs. Thumper is NOT a dog that will lay on the couch and eat treats. He must be mentally and physically challenged. Look up border collie if you are unaware of their tendencies. Thumper is estimated to be 2 years old. He has longer soft fur and is knockout gorgeous.  Thumper’s transformation has been phenomenal. He is starting to snuggle with his foster dad. He is allowing other people at work to pet him. Noises rarely startle him.  When Thumper first saw little humans, he ran away barking. He now lets a 2-year-old pet him and is starting to nose bump a baby.  He is very smart and gets along with other dogs. He played with an 8 pound dog and an 80 pound dog. He will stay away from dogs that want to be left alone. When he gets bored, he will explore and be a little mischievous.  If you are interested in Thumper, do some research on border collies so that you know what type of behavior to expect. Story
Layla is 36 lbs and 5-6 years old and also high energy! She loves to chase balls, but needs a few lessons on retrieving. She'll nose you to get you off the couch to play, and will bark at you until you pick up a ball and throw it. This girl is also a fan of belly rubs, which she will reward with kisses. She has a herding instinct, which has mellowed a bit in the past couple of months. She also will need a home without children, cats and small critters. She needs a bit of time to get to know new people and dogs, and we are working with our vet on this. Layla is spayed and fully vaccinated. She will need a fenced yard and an experienced handler with a strong understanding of the breed and a willingness to provide lots of exercise and tennis balls. Story
Laika is 36 lbs and 3-4 years old. This sweet girl loves chasing and often retrieving balls in the house and outdoors. She loves to sniff around off-leash in a fenced back yard. Turn on your garden sprinkler and she will be entertained and exercised. Laika initiates belly runs and gives kisses to her foster mom as a thank you. Laika is more dominant than Layla and has a strong herding drive, so we recommend a home with no children, cats or small critters. She's a little nervous meeting new people and dogs, which we are working on. Laika is spayed and fully vaccinated. She will need a fenced yard and an experienced handler with a strong understanding of the breed and a willingness to provide lots of exercise and tennis balls. Story
Meet Lincoln....... Lincoln is an adorable young boy, thought to be a Border Collie Mix. Like Border Collies, he’s very smart, a quick learner, very alert and quite energetic!! At age 9 months, he weighs 38 lbs. It is most important to note that we cannot be 100% sure of his adult weight, but our best guess is about 40ish lbs. This handsome boy joined BAARK from an overcrowded shelter in Kentucky earlier this year. He is thought to have been born around December 23, 2022. He was a scared little puppy when entering our rescue program but has come out of his shell and has evolved into a playful, sociable, and somewhat mischievous boy. Lincoln is great with dogs outside of his foster home, but can be protective of his home and human, indoors. Most likely Lincoln would prefer being an only dog, receiving all the attention he deserves. However he could to ok with a calm easy-going female. He would probably be far too energetic for a senior (dog or human!) An ideal family for Lincoln is one able to assimilate the energy of a young boy into its lifestyle and is willing to commit the time to working with and training Lincoln to be his best self! A secure, above-ground fenced yard is important. Lincoln would not thrive as an apartment dweller. Lincoln is crate-trained and is working on good house manners (housebreaking). He is up to date on all age-appropriate vaccinations, is heartworm negative and is on heartworm preventative. He is neutered and microchipped as well. . For information about adding this adorable boy to your family please contact BAARKDogRescue@gmail.com or 847-852-0895. BAARK is located in the far NW suburbs of Chicago and adopts local to this area.

Story
Reggie is at our shelter. Please submit an application from our website or just come in to meet him during open hours! Scroll through his pictures to see his videos! Reggie has a sad past, but a bright future ahead. Things can only get better for Reggie and his sister Rita. Rita and Reggie and many, many more of their siblings and relatives, were found in a Chicago home after the owner passed. Over a dozen cattle dogs (we assume they are all related) were living in terrible conditions in a home that looked normal from the outside. Chicago Animal Care and Control was alerted to the situation, but the dogs were so under-socialized and afraid that to take them all to the city shelter would be not only an issue of space (our city shelter is constantly full and in the terrible position of euthanizing dogs for space) but given how shut down they all were, a loud and scary place like that would make them worse. A local rescue, One Tail at a Time, was contacted in order to avoid these dogs going to CACC. They took all of the younger cattle dogs as some of the adults would not even allow them to approach. We were then contacted about taking two, and we stepped up-- how could we not once we saw their adorable faces? Rita and Reggie arrived to us on 4/8 and they were so shut down at first. In the span of 24 hours they made incredible progress, and continue to do so, and we are not just saying that! All you have to do is watch their videos to see for yourself. They do not solicit affection at first, unless they know you (they know staff and volunteers now so as you can see in the videos are super affectionate dogs!) but baby talk them a little and they come press into you and nudge for a little bit more pets. They may shy away at first as you reach for them, but they no longer flinch and dart away to huddle in a corner, shaking. WHen they came to us, they had never been on a leash, and now they walk like pros! They had probably only socialized with the other dogs in their house, and the few people, and now they have a ton of dog and human friends. We would love to get Reggie into a home, so he can really blossom. Reggie will need a patient adopter who has a home on the quieter side, without a lot of hustle and bustle. Reggie is so sweet, but he is still adjusting, and would need time to adjust yet again in a new space. This lasts all of two seconds, though. If you would like to be a part of Reggie's journey, please email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org about fostering or adopting this good boy, or come in to visit during open hours. Reggie's adoption fee is $250. This animal will be neutered on 4/25/24, is up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.
