*PLEASE READ - BY APPOINTMENT ONLY*Meet Louie!Louie has had a tough start to life with a background of uncertainty and insecurity. Having lived in an outdoor pit of his own filth, he was not socialized with humans and therefore struggles with confidence and trust. Staff have been working patiently and tirelessly on developing his confidence around new people and experiences. Louie is still learning to trust people and is learning to accept pets, although he enjoys having human company, even if it is just sitting near him in the yard. Learning to seek out pets and walking on a leash is still something that will need work with patient and understanding adopters. Louie enjoys having another canine keeping him company, and is confident when he has his brother Lincoln around. Louie could go to a home with Lincoln, or another confident and patient canine friend who can help him flourish. Louie can be shy when meeting new dogs at first and will need a slow and proper introduction to make sure things go smoothly. Although having a friend would be beneficial, he may also do well in a home as the sole dog, given his adopters are able to commit time to work on gaining his trust and building a bond. Due to his nervousness and shyness with new people, it is preferred for potential adopters to meet him at least twice in shelter and establish a good enough relationship before bringing him home. As he is still quite shy, a calm and quiet home with no young children is ideal.Louie loves toys, especially squeaky toys, and can be very playful! He loves investigating new toys and dragging them around. He loves treats and can be vocal when demanding more. Each and every day he gets a little braver and his personality shines. He is a retriever after all and has that silly personality where everything should go in his mouth. Louie enjoys water and sometimes takes a dip in his outdoor pool. Since Louie has lived outdoors his whole life, he is still not quite used to living indoors. His new home would need to have a fully enclosed outdoor area for him to stay in while he adjusts to indoor life. 💙🐾Do you think you could be Louie's person? Here's how to find out:Submit an online application adopt.spca.bc.ca and staff will contact the first suitable adopter to set-up a visit! Kindly note that due to the high number of applications and the availability of walk-in adoptions an online applicant would have to be available to come in for a meet within 24 hrs. Story
Meet Jasper! This gentle giant is eagerly looking for a home to call his own. Despite spending most of his life on a chain, Jasper is well socialized with people, and friendly with everyone he meets. Due to his past, he is still working on fine-tuning his manners, but he knows his basic commands. Jasper can be both calm and energetic, especially in the morning when he is excited to go out on a walk. He does not quite know how to walk in a straight line on a leash yet, but he is a smart boy who will learn quickly. Once he gets his energy out for the morning, he saunters along and walks well. Due to his large size, he will need a home that can handle a large dog who has tendencies to jump. Jasper also has a prey drive and can become fixated on smaller animals. He will need an adopter who is physically capable of holding him back in instances where he begins to pull towards them, and would do best in a home without small animals. Jasper would also love a yard so he can play with his favourite toys - especially balls! This gorgeous boy is eagerly awaiting his second chance at life, and can't wait to show you how cuddly and affectionate big dogs can truly be.Do you think you could be Jasper's person? Here are some ways to find out: 1. Visit our centre to meet this pet during adoption viewings Friday to Wednesday noon to 3pm, learn more about their ideal match, and apply to adopt in person; or 2. Submit an online application adopt.spca.bc.ca and staff will contact the first suitable adopter to set-up a visit! Story
Meet Tank, a magnificent big boy who is eagerly awaiting his forever home! At the shelter, Tank's interactions with staff highlight his true, loving nature. He adores his stuffed toys and will hold one in his mouth with big tail wags when he's happy to see you. Tank loves to play tug and enjoys scratches, leaning against our legs like a big cat when receiving them, and rolling onto his back when he wants belly rubs.He can be stubborn at times but he is a sweetie that comes with a unique set of challenges that only add to his charm. Tank is ready to go into a loving home after fully recovering from an enucleation. He only has one eye, but still navigates his surroundings well, although he can be more sensitive to environmental stimuli. Tank is startled by fast moving vehicles and semi-trucks and is currently working on being able to tolerate them. He may occasionally jump towards them and because he is a strong boy, he will need a strong handler to take him on walks. Tank is still learning to get into kennels, crates, and cars, and we are diligently working on behavior modification using positive reinforcement to make these experiences more comfortable for him. His future family should be dedicated to continually working on these issues. High-value treats like chicken and Cheese Whiz have proven effective in helping to encourage him.He can be mouthy when excited, so practicing calm interactions with him and training will help him succeed in his new home. We are currently working with Tank on muzzle training, as it is a great skill to have. With continuous and consistent training, Tank is an amazing dog with lots of love to give. While we have not had the chance to test Tank's compatibility with other dogs, it is important to note that he has shown barrier reactivity towards the other dogs in our care. He also has a prey drive and will need a home with no other animals. Due to his specific needs, Tank would do best in a household without children. For the right person or family, Tank promises a heartwarming companionship like no other. If you're ready to open your heart to a big-hearted dog in need, Tank is waiting to become your loyal and loving companion!💙🐾Do you think you could be Tank's person?
