Story
Gretel came to us as a neglected matted dog who could hardly see underneath the wad of compressed fur against her face. She had to be shaved down almost to the skin to get a fresh start so please look past her "growing" phase!Notes from Gretel's foster:Personality: If you love shy, sweet, and affectionate dogs, Gretel is your gal. She's a bit coy - she'll act scared, but ultimately wants your attention. Once you gain her trust, she will sit in front of you forever and lean into your hand and close her eyes in full bliss if you keep scratching the side of her head. If you try to stop, she'll keep pawing at you and follow you around, but she won't bark or whine. She'll also wrap her paws around your hand to ensure that you continue petting her. She also loves belly rubs. Her foster has yet to hear her bark. Even after wrestling her down to clean out her ears she didn't make a sound! Gretel is also good with respectful quiet children. She is also interested in other dogs and will sit so that she is allowed to go close to them. Does well with all size dogs.
Food Motivated: She loves treats and meal time and will keep licking her bowl for more food when she's done chowing down! She doesn't seem into vegetables, but will eat them if you hide chopped up carrots in her kibble. She also loves freeze dried liver and dental chews.
Skills: She doesn't seem very interested in material things - she got her own dog bone and a starfish squeaky toy, but prefers being around affectionate humans. She knows "Sit" pretty well and is working on "Down", "Stay" and "Go Potty". She's also working on walking better on a leash, but since she's so small, it's easy to control her.
Crate Trained: She will whine in protest if you put her back into her crate after playing with her or feeding her, but settles down after a few minutes and snoozes until your next adventure with her. She does love her crate. Even if you have her door open, she will still choose to go back inside.
Potty Trained: Gretel has had a few accidents (pee) so far outside her crate, but it might just be because she's getting used to her foster.
Car Rides: She lays down while going for car rides, but sometimes she vomits. More care is needed if you intend to drive her shortly after meals.
Schedule: Gretel goes potty when she wakes up at 7:30 am and then has breakfast. Afterwards, she relaxes in her crate. She will go potty again sometime again in the morning. Dinner is around 4 pm and she will go out to potty afterwards. She usually poos 2+ per day and is good about going in the same area in front of her foster's condo. Her last potty break is around 11 pm.Gretel would love a gentle home where she can get help gaining confidence, let out 3x+ a day to go potty (unless you're willing to pee pad train her) and a plan for her grooming needs. She seems flexible with exercise and is happy walking around the block a few times before she heads back up the stairs to her foster's condo or going for longer walks (40+minutes) without asking for a break to lay down. She's pretty smart and eager to learn new things (especially food puzzles) so if you have space in your heart for a sweet, quiet and gentle 10 lb non-shedding dog with an underbite - Gretel is the perfect furbaby for you!
