A brilliant, adventurous Border Collie mix looking for his forever family!
Maverick is a handsome, 1-year-old Border Collie mix with an incredible mind, a resilient spirit, and so much love to give. After overcoming a difficult start in life, this intelligent boy is ready for his next chapter with a family who understands his needs and appreciates everything that makes him special.

Personality & Temperament
Maverick is one incredibly smart dog! True to his Border Collie roots, he is observant, intuitive, curious, and always eager to learn. He thrives when given opportunities to use his brain, explore his surroundings, and engage with his people.
He's not the type of dog who simply follows you around. Maverick watches, learns, and genuinely wants to understand the world around him. His intelligence is one of his greatest qualities, but it also means he needs a family committed to keeping both his mind and body active.
Maverick is friendly and social with people and enjoys the company of other dogs. While he hasn't lived with children, he has had several positive interactions with kids during walks and visits to the park.
He currently lives comfortably with other foster dogs and sleeps in his own cozy bed near his foster siblings.
A few important things to know about Maverick:
Training: Maverick has worked extensively with a professional behavioral trainer and has made wonderful progress. Continuing his training and providing consistent structure will be important for his long-term success.
Other Dogs: Maverick enjoys canine companionship and could do well with another compatible dog. He can receive treats around other dogs when distributed individually, but regular meals should be served separately.
Cats: Maverick is not compatible with cats and needs a cat-free home.
Exercise & Enrichment: This intelligent boy needs more than a daily stroll. He loves exploring, sniffing, learning new things, and having activities that challenge his mind.
Crate Training: Maverick is still learning to be comfortable in a crate with the guidance of his trainer.
Maverick's Ideal Home
Maverick is looking for an experienced, dog-savvy family who understands Border Collies or other intelligent working breeds.
His ideal family will enjoy an active lifestyle and be committed to providing daily exercise, mental stimulation, and continued positive reinforcement training.
Maverick especially loves opportunities to explore! Long-leash walks are a fantastic way to give him the freedom to sniff, investigate, and enjoy his surroundings while remaining safely secured.
He would love a family interested in hiking, outdoor adventures, nose work, enrichment games, or simply spending quality time teaching him new things.
A securely fenced yard would be a wonderful bonus, but what matters most is having people who are committed to meeting his physical and mental needs.
Maverick could live with another compatible dog, provided introductions are thoughtful and meals are served separately. Families with children may also be considered, although his interactions with kids have been limited to positive experiences outside the home.
Maverick needs a family who will provide patience, consistency, structure, and plenty of opportunities to learn. His intelligence and sensitivity make him an incredibly rewarding companion for someone willing to invest the time.
Maverick's Rescue Story
Maverick's story began on the streets of a struggling neighborhood outside Guadalajara, Mexico.
He was found roaming the streets with a serious injury, doing his best to survive. A kind family noticed him and stepped in to help, providing food, treating his injury, and doing what they could to keep him safe.
Unfortunately, they lived in an apartment and couldn't bring him inside. Maverick continued living around the apartment complex, where he faced an uncertain and sometimes dangerous environment.
Some neighborhood residents didn't want stray dogs around, and Maverick was at risk of mistreatment. The family tried to protect him by keeping him secured near their apartment during the day, but they knew he deserved so much more.
Eventually, they reached out for help, and Maverick was brought into rescue.
When Maverick first arrived, his rescuers noticed something unusual. He often seemed completely disconnected from his surroundings and wouldn't respond when called. They initially wondered if he might be deaf.
But as Maverick began working with a professional behavioral trainer, they discovered that his hearing was perfectly fine.
His lack of response appeared to be a learned behavior, likely developed as a way to cope with the fear and uncertainty of his previous life.
With patience, consistency, and professional guidance, Maverick slowly began to let his guard down.
As he learned to trust, his incredible personality started to emerge.
The once-disconnected dog began engaging with people, responding to training, exploring his surroundings, and showing just how remarkably intelligent he truly is.
Today, Maverick has made tremendous progress. He is curious, social, eager to learn, and ready to continue building on everything he has accomplished.
His past taught him how to survive. His rehabilitation helped him learn to trust. Now he deserves a family who will show him what it means to belong.
From Mexico to the Pacific Northwest!
Maverick is currently living in a foster home in Mexico, where he is safe, loved, and continuing to thrive.
He is eligible to travel to the Pacific Northwest once he has a committed family approved for a trial adoption!
Because Maverick is still in Mexico, we are looking for a family who is serious about welcoming him into their home and giving him the opportunity to settle in and show them the wonderful dog he is becoming.
NorthWest Wag Rescue offers a 10-day trial adoption period for approved families in Washington, allowing Maverick and his potential adopters time to get to know one another before making a lifelong commitment.
Travel arrangements will be coordinated once a committed trial family has been approved, and families must be flexible with travel dates.
