Story
I am a 76 year old woman with a 2 year old toy poodle. She has some impulse control and other behavior issues and needs a lot of work. May 30th, my dear friend and roommate died unexpectedly. I rescued her 3 year old chihuahua.Since Mars was only trained on pee pads, was unmanageable on walks, and exhibited growly and snappy behavior as is common to Chihuahuas, I was afraid that she was unadoptable. I did not want her to be killed. Since May, we have made great strides with 2 sessions with a professional trainer and lots of time on my part. This dog is now completely trained to go potty outside. I have also found easy and gentle ways to circumvent her refusals to put on a harness, which had been my major difficulty. And during walks, her behavior of barking at other dogs has improved by at least 75%. I find it too hard to carry on with the stress and care of two manageable but time and energy intensive dogs. Plus, I have had 2 dog-related loss of balance and falls with 1 injury.

Story
Marzi is a petite 9-lb Chihuahua mix looking for a patient, understanding home. She has been through a lot of change and is still learning to trust.. She can be affectionate, smart, and full of love on her own terms. She enjoys daily walks and beach outings, where she loves to explore and can be found playing with her foster sister, Zara a toy poodle. Marzi is food-motivated and knows several commands like sit, down, stay, and wait. She has been working hard on her house-training and has made progress adapting to new routines. She thrives on positive reinforcement and consistency. Marzi can be shy/reactive around strangers, other dogs, loud noises, or when she feels her space is invaded. Because of this, she needs an adult-only home with adopters who are experienced with anxious dogs. She takes daily medication (Prozac and Trazodone) that helps her stay calm. She would do best in a quieter environment. Ideally, she will do best in an environment where she is the only dog.

Story
She is a Chihuahua mix and will be turning 4 in March. She weighs about 9 pounds. She is not altered but I hope her new ones will get her fixed. Shes very sweet and affectionate, but she is also skittish and doesn't get along well with other dogs or cats. She would be best suited for someone who works from home, is retired, or has a schedule that ensures someone is home with her. She doesn't bark much(will if someone knocks on the door) but she does whine when she's frustrated. She enjoys playing fetch with her favorite ball, chewing her rawhides, and cuddling. She's crate trained and enjoys laying in her kennel. She is a big love bug. She's really expressive and animated. She's truly the most adorable thing on the planet. She will come with food, bowls, raw hides, kennel with bed and blankets, harness, collar, leash, two carrying bags, puppy pads, Pet Genie w/bags (for puppy pads), a car seat, her toys, and a recent copy of her vaccination records. A small rehoming fee will apply.

All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated, and microchipped.  * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. Our adoption fees vary. Each biography will specifically list the adoption fee. This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, December 13th from 12-3pm unless adopted prior to the event. To be considered for adoption, pls submit an application in advance. Adoption fee: $600 Meet Quinn At just 5 lbs, 4 year old Quinn is the definition of a pocket-sized sweetheart. This gentle little Chihuahua came to DPS after her owner passed away and was completely heartbroken and terrified in the shelter. With love and patience from her foster family, Quinn has blossomed into a devoted, affectionate companion who is ready to find a forever home of her own.   Quinn starts her day around 7am with a quick trip to the backyard, then enjoys a leisurely breakfast—mshe grazes throughout the day and often saves a few bites for dinner time. Her days are calm and cozy; she loves curling up in her foster mom’s lap or finding a sunny spot to watch the birds outside. In the evening, she goes for a relaxed stroll around the neighborhood before dinner. She walks beautifully on a leash and doesn’t bark or pull— just takes in the sights at her own pace.   When Quinn first arrived, she was too scared to leave her crate. But after a day of gentle encouragement, she began to trust her foster mom and soon became her little shadow. Quinn is a velcro dog at heart— she loves to be close to her person and will happily follow you from room to room—but she can also be left alone without issue as long as she has access to the yard for potty time. She’s housetrained, crate trained, quiet, and respectful in the home. While she's used to going potty in the yard, it's likely she could adjust to using potty pads in an apartment setting as well, so she's an option for folks who work outside the home and will be gone during the day.   While Quinn can coexist peacefully with other dogs, she would be happiest as the only dog in the home so she can soak up all the love and attention for herself. She’s okay meeting dogs on walks and has been calm around visiting kids and guests, though she’s initially shy with new people. Once she warms up, her loyalty and affection shine through— she’ll greet you joyfully when you come home and never let you feel alone.   Quinn would thrive in a calm home with patient adopters who understand that trust takes time but is well worth the wait. Her ideal family would have older kids or adults who appreciate a quiet, gentle companion and who find joy in a tiny dog who simply wants to be by their side.   Favorite things: sitting in the sun, watching the world go by, and being loved by her person.   In short: shy at first, deeply loyal once she knows you—Quinn is a little dog with a big heart who just wants someone to call her own.December 12, 2025, 3:44 am

To be considered for adoption, pls submit an application in advance.   Adoption fee: $600 Meet Harley! Harley is a 4 year old, 5 lb (TINY!) Chihuahua who was rescued from a noisy, overwhelming shelter — a scary place for such a little girl. But once she left that behind, her true personality started to shine! Harley is gentle, loving, and devoted — a little shadow who just wants to be near her favorite person.   Her foster says Harley is a total sweetheart who has quickly adapted to home life. Her mornings start around 6 a.m. with a quick potty break in the yard, followed by her favorite ritual: snuggling back into bed with her humans. Breakfast is served around 7, and she loves hunting for her kibble in a snuffle mat or treat puzzle. Harley enjoys a few short, brisk walks throughout the day, with plenty of time for cuddling in between. Her evenings end with dinner, a cozy lap session, and curling up in bed — ideally tucked under the covers beside her person, her absolute favorite place to sleep.   Harley’s personality is calm and affectionate. She’s a true lap dog and Velcro companion who thrives on closeness and attention. She loves being praised and melts into your arms for cuddles. She’s a low-energy, low-maintenance girl — more of a lounger than a hiker — who still enjoys sniffy strolls and the occasional chase after a squirrel. She’s alert and will give a few barks to announce visitors, but quiets quickly once she knows all is well.   Harley is working on her housetraining and doing well with frequent potty breaks and positive reinforcement. She’s fine with gentle children, though their high energy can make her nervous, and is fine coexisting with other calm dogs, though she's not interested in playing and may be a bit put off by dogs with a ton of energy. She's a low-key lady!   What makes Harley special is how deeply she bonds with her person. She’s incredibly sweet, obedient, and full of love — the kind of dog who makes every day brighter just by being near you. Whether she’s snuggled into a blanket on the couch or curled up in bed, Harley’s happiest when she’s close to the person she adores.   If you’re looking for a tiny companion who will love you with her whole heart and make you feel like the most important person in the world, Harley is waiting to meet you.  December 12, 2025, 3:44 am

Our adoption fees vary. Each biography will specifically list the adoption fee.Adoption fee: $750 Meet Ducky!   Ducky is a 9–10 week old Chihuahua mix who may be tiny, but she has a huge heart and an even bigger personality. She was rescued from the shelter after being abandoned, and from the moment she arrived in her foster home, she’s shown just how resilient, loving, and special she is. Her foster also wanted us to tell you that she is MUCH cuter in person- photos just don't do her justice!   Ducky starts her day bright and early around 6:00 AM, letting her foster family know she needs a potty break. After that, she’s happy to curl back up and sleep for several more hours. She’s already almost completely potty trained and does an impressive job of communicating— she’ll cry to let you know when she needs to go outside, even if she’s been hanging out in her pen for a bit. For such a young puppy, she has excellent bladder control and can make it nearly all night until morning.   When Ducky first arrived, she was sweet right away, but she’s continued to blossom with each passing day. Now, her personality truly shines: she’s affectionate, playful, social, and very people- and animal-oriented. She loves being with her foster family’s medium-sized Labradoodle and does great with their cat as well. Playtime with the resident dog is a joy to watch— they switch roles between being playful leaders and happy followers, showing how well-mannered and adaptable Ducky already is.   After a good romp in the backyard (where she loves to zoom around at full speed), Ducky is perfectly content to curl up in your lap for a cozy nap. She’s a true cuddler and enjoys being near her people. While she may protest for a few minutes when placed in her ex-pen— she is very social, after all— she settles quickly and naps peacefully once she realizes it’s time to relax.   Ducky is a wonderful balance of playful puppy energy and calm snuggly sweetness. She loves toys of all kinds and can be a bit mischievous, earning herself the nickname “the Hoover” for her tendency to scoop up socks or toys she finds lying around. The good news? She’s very responsive and will quickly drop items when asked. She’s also teething a bit, but with gentle redirection to appropriate chew toys, she does great.   This little girl is incredibly smart and food motivated, making her a joy to train. She already knows how to sit, go to her place, and is starting to learn even more. With continued positive reinforcement, she’s going to thrive.   Ducky would do well in a home that enjoys engaging with their dog— through playtime, training, and cuddles. She’d be happy in a home with another dog, a cat, and would likely do wonderfully with kids who want an active, affectionate puppy to grow up with.   What sets Ducky apart is the combination of her intelligence, adaptability, and pure sweetness. She’s silly, loving, soft as can be, and genuinely one of her foster family’s favorite dogs they’ve ever had. Anyone lucky enough to adopt Ducky will be gaining a devoted companion who is ready to grow, learn, and love with her whole heart.December 15, 2025, 9:58 pm
